Mission:

"To promote the wellbeing of South Asian immigrants through services that facilitate their adjustment, integration and friendship with the wider society, nurturing their sense of community and fostering appreciation for their heritage and culture."

Indo-American Center

History:

• Established in 1990 by a group of Indian immigrants seeking to respond to the needs of Chicago's South Asian immigrant population

• Originally a one-room office providing immigration assistance

• Has grown in size and offered services

• Now the oldest South Asian organization in Chicago

Weaknesses:

• Understaffed - only about 37 people servicing hundreds of people

• Underfunded - operating on an annual budget of $800,000
