RFL ROUND TEN IN FOCUS

COOLAMON gets its chance to prove how far it has come when it hosts ladder leaders GanmainGrong Grong-Matong at Kindra Park on Sunday. In terms of blockbusters, this is about as big as it comes. The two teams are arch-rivals, near neighbours and love beating each-other. The form also suggests it will be a tough clash with both teams coming into the game with tremendous form. The Lions are the three-time reigning premiers, undefeated this year and coming off a strong win over Narrandera. Coolamon has won its past six straight to storm into second position on the ladder. The Hoppers travelled to Griffith last weekend and beat the Swans easily. Coolamon will be out to provide a bigger challenge than the opening round when the Lions prevailed by 45 points. Coolamon, though, is not the same team as round one. The Hoppers have risen to every challenge in the

past six rounds and coach Scott Easdown has his team playing a ferocious brand of football. Coolamon's midfield has been firing with the likes of Jamie Maddox, Ryan Chamberlain, Wade Archibald and Easdown dominating the stoppages and clearances thanks to the ruck work of Ben Edyvean. Ben Cadzow did not play in round one and will give the Hoppers a strong target at full-forward. Marshall Macauley, Luke Maloney, Dom Nash and Brett Nolte have also provided different avenues to goal. Coolamon will also hope to regain Nick Pleming, James McKenzie, Joe Redfern and Brett Nolte for the big game. On the other hand, GGGM should be close to fullstrength. Matt Rava, Mitch Steele and Henry Weddell are still to return to the Lions team while they will be sweating on the fitness of Nick Carroll, Daniel Hitchens and Nathan McPherson. The trio finished last weekend on the bench with

injuries. The availability of Jacob Olsson will also be huge, with Coolamon big man Ben Edyvean enjoying a good run of form this season. Curtis Steele, Hitchens and Luke Kohlhagen have been in great touch for GGGM and the trio will be sure to come under the attention of the Hoppers. A win to the Hoppers here will blow the premiership race wide open, while GGGM will be out to slam the door shut on another challenger.

WAGGA Tigers face another must-win game, this time it is Leeton-Whitton at Robertson Oval on Saturday. Tigers moved into the top five with a hard-fought win over Mangoplah-Cookardinia United-Eastlakes last round, with veteran big man Andrew Priest making a surprise return to claim best-onground honours. Coach Tom Power will be missing this week, but Tigers hope to regain key forward Leigh Cameron

for the clash. Leeton-Whitton is treating the clash with a finalslike mentality as they look lo claw its way back into the finals race.

MANGOPLAH-Cookardinia Uniled-Eastlakes get its second crack at Collingullie-Ashmont-Kapooka on Saturday. The Goannas showed big signs of improvement last weekend but the loss of assistant coach Dylan de Britt to an ankle injury is a huge blow. The Demons will fancy their chances of a big win.

G.RIFFITH will look to get its final chances back on track when rt travels to Maher Oval on Sunday to take on Turvey Park. The Swans have lost their past three games to drop from second to sixth on the ladder. Turvey Park got within five goals of Griffith last time and gets an opportunity to bring up its first win of the season.

COOLAMON HOPPERS

Three things I leamed this week 1, You don't have to leave at dawn to get to Gnflith. 2. Griffrth = bes1 facilities - won;t crowds. 3. I'd like to see Cadz on a footy trip. Big day today with the Call to Arms game. Farmoz is the game day sponsor for the dert,y today -many thanks to Shane ·Mushtac)" Rudd for the support. Also a reminder of the Bade to Front Ball at the Sporls - Saturday July 2 ( atter Narrandera ) at 7 .30. $20 gets you In and a Chance in the draw - let's padc the joint. Also worth noting is the Hopper Merchandise sale with up to 50% off gear - check 11 out at Festival Hall. Bloody good tnp to Gritrrth with 3 wins on the hotmix and 2 in rooty. Earty starting Juniors battled hard in the arctic condrtions. with Gemma Hard (Sox & Canteen) and Charlotte Plemo ( Ajanta) the best. C2 won a nail biter 22-21, Jess Brill the Bakery award getter and Amanda Mar.hall snavelled the sax, C's had a good win , with Corina Bray grabbing the B<xtorn Pub award, and Kaarin Edy the Steel Supplies gong. Mindy O'Brien smashed em in the B's win for the Milney award. with Tatum Kew the SS support ad, while the A's went down with Viv Murnane ( Milneys) and Karty ·Not Fat" Matt ( No Flies) the standouts You've gotta hand tt to the 17's - they keep fronting up with 14 and busting their guts. Micky Gibbo was a good in for us, and despite having his head ripped off about a dozen times mar>aged to get the Comm Club dinner. Boii is having a ball on the ball, and got the Hopper voucher( buy your Mum a hoodie). and Unde n11y snared the sax We have got a cash award going for the rest of the year for the taos thanks to Cadz and the 1 ·s boys The deal was struck at the Bottom on Saturday night- I hope they remember? Weehly injury this week goes to Cirrus Hooper ( AC Joint). The 2·s fell In against the cellar dWelling Swans, managing to scrape home by a point Best effort tor the day was zac Bradclo, who showed more desperation than dosing time a1 the Capital to save the game in the dying seconds with 3 tackles and 4 smothers in the goal square. Comm dub and Calcutta went to Weenie Bradley, whose dass kept the measly crowd from adJouming to the bar ea~y. Ho Leary continues to improve weekly, and got the Hopper Voueher, while Big T J looks lo be regaining his mojo, dunking some big grabs and got the Players Player. The 1 ·s never looked hke getting beaten after a brighl start, and powered .may for an impressive win. The awards were harder to pick than a list of honest poiiticians, With Marsh McCrawty giving us a bouncy target up front wtth a lazy hatt dozen to take the Comm Club dinner. GANMAIN-GRONG GRONG-MATONG LIONS

Another big day of Football and Netball last Sunday was enjoyed by all at Ganmain Sports Ground. all games were bruising encounters. NETBALL The weather may have been wet and miserable but that didn't stop our Juniors from their winning ways beating Narrandera 41 -28. C Graue also handled the wet weather well winning 47-29. B grade was slightly under manned with a couple of C graders doubling up and despite their efforts lost 42-28. Things definitely warmed up when A grade tOOk the cour1 and played an amazing game (thanks to a very supportive crowd) to beat the unbeaten Narrandera gi~s 45-42 The 17's put in another good pertormance and only need to get together a bit more regularity and work on their skils and a win will be just around the comer. Sam Hatty had another big game through the middle (George Carroll Award). Josh Ashcroft won the Coolamon Butchery Award 'MIiiam Lawton continues to impress and won the Jari Neilson Building Award, Joel Hatty is proving very handy up foiward and is improving every weeK to win the Bowlo Bistro .mard. Johna Bedding did a power of work in the ruck and took out the Grongy Hotel Award. The second's had a good win which saw the return of Abblett to the arena. It was touch and go but we finally got the all dear on Saturday and he didn't disappoint kicking four majors up front Sam Kelford was a standout (Bowling Club Award), Bomber Hare knocked up getting kicks and paying out schooners to win the Ganmain Hotel to win the Ganmain Hotel award. Another highlight of the game was the return of Mitch Steele, He finally finished the bicentennial project (siren boyThanks Mitch) and could concentrate on playing footy and took out the Sports Club bistro award. Big Bad Bussling Boo Boo Bradley Bryon won the Coaches award with a stellar game In the ruck. Bulk V-Jalsh was as strong as an ox and won the Ag N Vet Mug. The first grade game wasn't the prettiest game but definijely what was lost in finesse was made up with toughness The Squire. Fatso. (he's Jost the 'latte· tiUe apparenUy) was as safe as an aussle bank down back. He was going that well he was still giving cheek white staring a pounding in the eye. Young Jacob Olsen put in a huge performance, all things considered. against quality opposition to win the Sports Club Award. Ranks covered the ground Uke a blanket and bobbed up everywhere to win the Riverina Machinery Award. Curtis Steele was qutte for the first ten minutes of the game but was excellent after that and won the Sports Bar Plus Mug. Rolly Kohlhagen continues his good form and won the Coaches award. This week will be a cracker against our country cousins and near neighbours, the Hoppers who are flying at the moment. Don't forget our function dates -• 6th August- SUPPORTERS AND PLAYERS COCKTAIL NIGHT at the Sports Club , Sunday 14th August-150 club at the sports club (see Peter Mccaig for tickets)

TURVEY PARK BULLDOGS

Toe seniors didn't quite get over the line last week, but it was great to see us play some stronger and more direct football right until the final bell. HopefuUy that effort will be the springboard for a more competitive seconCl half Of the season. Harry Cunningham (Mug & S50) was welcomed back for a rare appearance and was the standout, Brendan Bryce (Milton's Gear) defended and attacked with good judgement. Mayah Mcintosh (Envy Hair) was desperate for every contesl and John Buchanan was effective on his wing. Brodie Elworthy gave some grunt on debut and Steve Smith was a good target finishing with 4 goals. The reserves had an enthralling battle all day and finally were able to get over the line in a dose one Hopefully that trend will a:intinue. Michael Ness (Mug) enjoyed a productive day on ball with 3 goals, Luke Donaldson (Tolland Hotel) was steady in defence, Tom Cramp (Socks & Stubby Holder) has slotted back in n-cely, and Nathan Flanigan (Do!ninos) continued his good form. Arter a horror start the 17's got themselves right back into the game by half Ume. Despite the young Dogs hitting the front with about 5 mins left on the dock. the Crows made the most of the slippery conditions an<J kicked the last 2 goals to get the points. Hayden Dore (Ladies Aux $20) won his position on the day, Josh Hill (Exploit) got through unscathed. Jeremy Sykes (Hunters Towel) was lively, and Billy Weedon (Dominos) worked hard. The netballers had mixed results with B-Grade and JuniO<S scoring good wins to remain prominent at the halfway marx Unfortunately A & C Grades found the opposition too strong on the day, and will be looking to find some consistent form to secure finals berths. After a week off we got back into the fooly and netball with mixed resuts all round. Coolamon were the last team for us to play to complete the round and a game that was really needed to keep in touch wi1h the top 5 for first grade. Unfortunately the day didn't go to script with Coolamon getting out to a lead and then keep us at bay for most of the day. Dean Catan.zariti & James Fallon in his come back from penanoe being two of better performed on the day. Guy Orton continues to improve and had a big day In the engine room setting up numerous forward raids. Tom Buckley marked almost everything that was kicked his way and gave us a good target up foiward. And the backline duo of Glen Snaidero & Matt Noonan battled hard all day to keep us in the game. In the end we went down by 31 points. The Seconds was a hugely entertaining game also, and lhe boys nearty came away with their first win of the season but went down by a solitary point in I/le dying seconds of the game. RIVERINA UMPIRES ASSOCIATION

It was great to see the reception given to RUA President Rob Wilson last week to mark the occasion of his 400th senior game Congratulations lo the GGGM Football Club for the way they acknowledged Robs achievement, and also to the players from both Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong and Narrandera on the way they congratulated Rob on his efforts. We tend to only hear about "incidents" between clubs anu umpires, but here is the true essence of what footy in the country is all about, everybody working together for the betterment of our great game. So. once again. well done to Ganmain and Narrandera for their efforts last week. and it was a great game of footy too. Next Thursday night, June 30th, will be a coaching night only. This means no training, instead we will meet at 6 al The Rules Club for a dinner, and following that. Greg will conduct a coaching session. This means we should be home at the usual Thursday night time. Be great to see as many umpires as possible to attend, not just for the coaching session. but also to catch up in a social environment. I know that Smithy and his MIA boys are going to try and come over. Hopefully we can see some goalies and the bulk of our Wagga members there on Thursday night And finally this week. I found this great article recently, that will be of interest to those people who want to continually abuse umpires. Have a read of ii. and then have a think about ii.

Time to bury the 'maggot' label By Gwen Reisenberg

OK, so I know it's not AFL umpires appreciation week or anything but ..

As an undiscovered sports analyst and avid fan of the game itself. I am appalled by the views of the masses regarding the umpires. Umpires are the most underrated commodity in the AFL. I have witnessed many a conversation between supporters of a team staring in the face of defeat or simply not playing well: on most occasions the umpires were completely responsible for the loss or poor performance. The 22 players selected lo play Iha! day could not have done any more as the umpires obviously "had ii in for them". As a whole I think the umpires do a remarkable job. In a game with ever-increasing rule changes and one of the fastest paced sports in the world. the umpires have to be just as quK:k if not quicker than the players themselves. I am constantly amazed al the ability of the umpires to see things almost quicker than the human eye. Watching a game on TV recently. I saw many incidents where I was left thinking. "how in the world did they see that?" when I saw absolutely nothing until the slow molion replay pointed ii out lo me. The ability and fitness of the men in yellow (or red or green) lo gel lo every contest is unbelievable and I have no doubt that they lrain just as hard as the players themselves. The football supporters are an unforgiving bunch. I find 11 strange that fans will boo an incorrect umpiring dec1sIon but will not boo a player who makes a poor decision under pressure because this would be 'unsoortsmanlike'. I am full of admiration for the umpires al the highest level. They have done their time just like any other player on the field and no doubl have the same inJU,Y concerns, training and recovery sessions as any AFL player. The difference being that they do it without the fanfare and special treatment that comes with a high profile.

A LION'S GIANT IMPRESSION

SEASON 2011 has been no ordinary one for talented ruckman Jacob Olsson. A few months back Olsson was turning heads in his brief dabble with rugby league and all of a sudden he is an important part of new AFL franchise Greater Western Sydney. It has been a hectic start to the year for Olsson but the laidback 19-year-old is taking it all in his stride. "I'm loving it." Olsson said this week about his time with the Giants. "It's a great experience. Not just footy but a life experience as well. "Meeting new people and all that sort of thing. "The calibre of footy is great too." Olsson was a late convert to Australian football after growing up playing a combination of soccer, rugby league and rugby union. It was when in school at Sydney that he was convinced to play a few games of Australian football with his mates and it went from there. Olsson picked up the game in no time at all and it wasn't long until he was selected in the NSW-ACT Rams for the under 18 national championships, only to miss out with injury. It was a big blow to miss out on the carnival but Olsson recovered in time to play in his first senior premiership with GanmainGrong Grong-Matong later in the year. Twelve months later and Olsson had a second premiership medallion in September last year. It was over the off-season that Olsson decided to try training with Group Nine rugby league club Kangaroos, where he eventually took part in the West Wyalong pre-season knockout. What was meant to be a harmless run turned into much more, as Sydney rugby league clubs began knocking on the door

25

after a tremendous showing. The unwanted attention of rugby league clubs forced Olsson to choose between sports, where he had no hesitation in committing to the Lions. Olsson's early season form with the Lions this year was outstanding and it prompted GWS to rush him straight into its team without having sighted the teenage ruckman. Olsson has done the job for the Giants, stringing numerous games together now and even bagged three goals in one outing. He has played in the ruck , up forward, and was even played at full-back last week where he kept Sydney Swans star Jesse White to two goals. CONTINUED P26

OLSSON IS MAKING GIANT STRIDES

CONTINUED FROM P25 Olsson said the experience has opened his eyes as to what it takes to be involved at a professional AFL club. "The biggest thing is just how much dedication is needed to play at that level of football," Olsson said. Olsson said the feedback from the Giants has been helpful as he strives to improve. "A few times Sheeds or Chaco have come up to me and it's been really good," Olsson said. "They'll tell me that I'm not playing good, or they'll tell you that you're doing something right and to keep doing it. "Me as well, I've been one to ask for advice and ask for feedback and it's not just the coaches that help out, it's also the players. "Jona Giles, the ruckman, he's got plenty of experience and he's been another key fac-

tor in helping me out." The taste of playing with an AFL club has reinvigorated Olsson's desire to play at the highest level. Olsson believes his story is the perfect endorsement for the Giants' arrival in Southern NSW. "The RFL is a really good league at the moment, it might not be the best, but you're still getting scouted, which this has proven," Olsson said. "You're still getting looked at. GWS is giving kids the opportunity to play at that level and from there all the AFL clubs are watching. "It's a great scheme they've got going." Olsson's praised his boss Jason Linsell for his understanding when he gets the lastminute call to head to Sydney late in the week.He also gave credit to Paul Kelly for the work he is putting in helping him with his skills.

PREDICT THE FUTURE - WIN A HOLIDAY

The AFL Record has teamed up with Virgin Australia, the official airline of the AFL, to encourage aspiring writers to try their hand at short story writing with an AFL theme. The AFL Record 2011 Short Story Compe

tition, which will run for eight weeks through the AFL Record, asks writers to submit a previously unpublished story of no more than 2,000 words focusing on the AFL in 2022. The goals of the competition are: to promote fine short story fiction about

Australian football, to fantasise about the future of Australian

football. The brief (available via allrecord.com.au/shortstory) explains that the game has gone International. with professional teams playing in zones across Asia. Europe. America. South America. the Pacific and Australia. Every four years. the world unites to play for the AFL World Rules, the first of which was played four years before in 2018. Entrants are encouraged to let their imagination take over. They can concentrate on one zone if they wish. focusing on the impact of the game on the local culture or they can write their story from a team or an individual perspective. However. all entries must include a reference to how football became an international game. The possibilities of what can occur on the

field in any AFL game are basically limitless, AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou said. We want to see our fans let their imagina-

tions run to their limits, on where our game can be in a decade from now

FARRER FOOTBALL LEAGUE PREVIEW

NORTH Wagga will be out to cement its position in the Farrer League top three when it takes on the undefeated Marrar Bombers at McPherson Oval on Saturday. The Saints slipped up last week when they went down to Northern Jets but still manage to sit a game clear of East WaggaKooringal in third place. A top three position is all important, as it guarantees a double chance come finals and the Saints can go a long way towards securing that place with an upset over the ladder leaders. The Saints copped a couple of injuries from last weekend and will lost Matt Harmer and Jake Hindmarsh. But North Wagga is hopeful of regaining the services of full-forward Ben Carey, along with Dean Ward and Nick Blencowe for the big clash. North Wagga coach Nigel Smith has also decided on a return to the playing field last week and he will certainly provide the Saints with plenty of direction out on the paddock. Adam McKenzie was North Wagga's big recruit over the off-season and he is just starting to warm to his task. He will need to stand tall and produce a big performance for the Saints if they are to get up and knock off the Bombers. Marrar has been doing what it has to, winning games, but the margins have started to lessen. They withstood one of the main challengers, EWK, last weekend and posted an unconvincing 21-point victory.

GT

Marrar coach Dean Howard will remain on the sidelines for another couple of weeks with a finger injury, while Josh Suckling and Graeme Reid are overseas. Ruckman Shannon Williams missed last week's win and should return, while the likes of Josh Hagar, Andrew Higginson, Andrew Gunsser and Shaun Lowry will be better for the run after returning from injuries and unavailability. Ben Langtry has been impressive since coming into the side mid-year while Marc Sheppard and Brad Turner are just hitting their straps up forward. Shane Macintosh chimed in with five goals last weekend to add another dimension to the Marrar forward line, which will prove handy for the Bombers over the second half of the year. North Wagga, with plenty happening at McPherson Oval on Saturday, will aim up big time here to roll the Bombers and it will be interesting to see how Marrar handles another serious challenge.

THE game between Northern Jets and Charles Sturt University will have a large say in the fifth and final position in this year's Farrer League finals series. The Jets are just starting to come good and they snared an important win over North Wagga last weekend. The week. before, the Jets pushed Marrar all the way. Jets coach Michael Wheatley is in brilliant form at the moment and if the Jets can continue to improve they will certainly push the Bushpigs for fifth spot, and maybe

ROUND NINE

more. CSU won comfortably against Temora last week and have the advantage of the wide spaces of its home ground. These two teams drew earlier in the year and again it looks set to come down to the wire.

EAST Wagga-Kooringal gets its chance to bounce back when it hosts Coleambally at Gurnly Oval on Saturday. The Hawks have been impressive this year and will start short-priced favourites to beat the Blues.

Coleambally have been competitive but will need to start stringing some wins together soon if it is to keep its finals hopes alive.

THE Rock-Yerong Creek host Temora in the final game of the round. This game produced huge scores last time and both teams are sure to go in with a more defensive frame of mind. TRYC should come out comfortable winners and continue on their way to finals, especially with the mid-season additions of Nathan McDonald, Mitch Leaver and Mark Ward.

TEMORA KANGAROOS

Well another week another close game in 1st. an• other battle for reserves & another forfeit for the 17's. The reserves although fighting gallantly the whole game, lost by a large margin. The theory of she'll be right, my fitness & skills don't need improving because I'm good enough has proven wrong over the last couple of weeks with fitness & skills proving the difference between winning & losing. The standouts & therefore winners of the awards were Tommy Winkley who has come along in leaps & bounds this season & with a little more bulk on his body could be pushing for a first grade position. The other award went to Platinum. j ust his name tells you why he got an award. The firsts although playing some very good patches of footy mainly played flat footed & looked very tired. Maybe the fact that the soup bowl has a hill the size of Mt Everest in the guts might have something to do with it. The midfield award went to Timmy Mac who is showing not only is he going to be a very good backman but also a very handy midfielder. The backline award went to Mick O liver with his aero dynamic hair design allow ing him to beat his opposition to the ball every time . The forward award went to Scotty Blackwell who has shown great form this year & proving to everyone that backman can play in the forward line & kick goals. The mug went to Chris Block who continually amazes with the amounl of stamina he has to run all day. In the Netball C grade were defeated 45-11 . Mea• gan Tassell had an exceptional game and taking home the Best on court award. B grade came away with an impressive 42-33 win over CSU with players player being awarded to Monique Freeman. A grade was defeated 42-37 with Margie Johnston being named best on court. On Wed the 29th of June there is a lrivia night to be held @ Ternora Ex-Services starting at 6.30pm. Tables of 8-10 people at $50 per table . For table booking contact Skip Hartwig of Belinda Bushell. Let's all get there & have a great night. This week Temora w ill be travelling to the Rock. EAST WAGGA KOORINGAL HAWKS

First game back after the bye and we faced the top side on their home turf, the 17's started the day off with a dominating win but that was as far as our winning went. The boys played Marrar for the 3rd time already this year and held the wood over them again. A few of these boys can't be far off a taste of senior footy and it's great to see the future of our club looking so bright. Jarrod Turner. Vaughan Winnell, Kyle (Dave) North Flanagan and Mitch Robbo all had blinders. The 2s started well and it was anyone' game at half time but Marrar kicked into over drive and that was that. This is who we must beat come September fella's so best we get a win up next time to sow the seed of doubt. Jake Emery had his best game of the year followed closely by young Turn's and big Sammy. In near blizzard conditions the game began at a frantic pace, the boys held a slender lead at quarter time but again went nigh nigh's in the 2nd and let Marrar pile on the goals. To only go down by 3 goals was pretty lucky and goes to show if we play 4 quarters of footy the world is our oyster. Knoxy led the way along with regular contributors Crowey, Smithy and Walto. Always a tough day out at Marrar for the netballers and this proved to be no different. C grade awards went to Kalie and Kel Mac. B grade were Tegan and Emma and A grade were Erin Quintal and Elle Harrigan, coaches award went to Erin Noble. The bubbly Neisha Mullins earnt herself the netballer of the day award. Ok on the 2nd of July we play Northern Jets at Gumly and as per last year's concept the past players are having a very informal reunion type day. Just a time to have a catch up and reminisce about the past. in the 1st grade game the boys will be playing off for the Greg Smith trophy, donated by Boss Hotdogs. Greg who is a former Swans and Collingwood player as well as having played for EWK and Ardlethan will be presenl to award the trophy to the winning team. A courtesy bus will be operating on the day for those who wish to sink a few sherbets. For more info contact [email protected] or see Mary. This week we welcome Coleambally for the 1st time, be sure to stick around for a quick beer before you venture back home and good luck to all teams.

COLEAMBALLY BLUES I

Coty welcomed TRYC for the first time last Saturday in cold wintery conditions. In a low scoring even contest coly were unfortunately defeated by 6 goals with the TRYC disposal being clearly superior to coly being the main difference also converting all of their chances. Best players for coly were M. Barry, C.Pound and R.Bull. Reserve grade also battled hard and came up short losing by 9 goals in the end with all players contributing including the younger players best were D Mannes. Z smith and S.Schliebs. On Sunday the Juniors travelled to Griffith to play the swans the U11 were unfortunately well beaten by the Swan but managed a couple of goals well done boys best were D. BRAIN, B. MANNES, J. BUCHANAN. In U13 the Griffith boys were again to strong kicking well clear of the boys best players were J. LYELL, L. FOSTER, T HAYES. Also congratulations to Tim Hayes on his representative duties at Narrandera last Saturday. In netball news Congratulations to A Grade who had their fourth fantastic win for the season 38-35. In B Grade the girts battled hard and put in a solid performance but lost 31 to 45 with Jackie Painter and Erin Dunbar claiming the awards. Our C grade team played a close game but just weren't strong enough. This week's award winners, Di Kelly and Olivia Lawrence won<ed well together in the ring. They only went down by 7 goals which was gusty effort as last time they meet the Magpies they were beaten by 41 goals. The juniors came up against a lot stronger team although they tried hard all game they went down 25-8. Awards to Annie Mader and Molly Mcfadyen. On Sunday the SWJFL girls took on the Swans. The U/11 played a great game with the whole team won<ing well together. The swan's coach even commented on the great improvements our girls have made, unfortunately we came away with a loss. Danielle Mannes shot well, scoring the 4 goals,

NORTH WAGGA SAINTS

The Saints had a difficult task ahead of them, travelling into the Jets territory last Saturday. The crowd witnessed both first grade teams fight it out, until the final minutes of the match. II was always going to be a tough fought game, and the crowd could not have been disappointed, with the display of desperation produced by both the Jets, and the Saints in all grades. Regardless of the final score, the First grade game was played with some exciting passages of play and velocity. The stand out players on the field, were awarded to the following: Jeremy Luff, Issac Rutland, Mitch Fury, Kyle Cross, Josh Campbell. Jesse Margosis and Josh Lucus. The Reserves started the game 'hands on' and continued to adopted and display a consistent contest throughout the day. The Reserves best went to: Michael 'top-dog' Barnes. Shane Tracey, Nathan Kelly. Jack Cox and Lewis Grear. The Netball stars of the day were B Grade, coming off successful in a fine display of netball. The girls worked extremely hard for the entirety of the game, and decided to dedine the 'mid-game snooze·. The awards for B grade went as follows: Amanda Cross for precise shooting, and Corinna 'fluff' Luff for excellent defensive play. C Grade unfortunately went down by a few goals, and will have to work on some more defensive plays for the coming week. C grades best went to: TIiiy Taggart and Hayley Crouch. The A graders clawed their way back into the match in the last quarter, which incidentally saw them only 4 goals down! But due to an unfortunate injury and a quick re-shuffle. the Saint'ettes' concluded the game 8 goals down. A Grade displayed three extremely strong quarters, which we all hope can continue in the coming rounds. The best for A Grade went deservingly to: Carty Tracey and Alice Mattingly. Today is our Breast Cancer Ladies Day Awareness function. and all of our Ladette's ... .. Sorry Saint'ettes' will be in fine form off the ground today, for their special occasion. Please people get behind and support this ever so worthy function, so we can all continue to watch its success and development in the future. Please all note that everyone is more than welcome to attend the 'Jersey Auction' tonight, which proves to be well worth a lookl

11 MARRAR BOMBERS

Another fairly dose encounter last Saturday against the Hawks. It was a great effort given the guys still sitting on the sidelines through injury or away on holidays. Our Two's also played extremely well for another win and the Girls won all three netball games. Our 1 Ts may not be winning too many but we reckon ~ is a win to field a side week after week when the "experts' reckoned we couldn't.In the Seniors, Andrew Higginson took out the Mug with a display of attacking football and also keeping one of the Hawk's best midfielders quiet all game. Ben Langtry just keeps getting better and better and thoroughly deserved the $50 Sporties Award. Haven't seen much of Shaun Lowry this season because of work commitments however the big fella stood up to the plate in 'Slowy's" absence to take out the $20 Sporties Award. In the Two's the standouts were Joel Robinson and Daniel Fox. Both blokes were on their game and ii was Robbo who ended up taking out the Mug and Foxy earning the I/Vol1\out Gym award, Jason Kendall and our elder statesman Paul Price picked up the South VVagga Butchery meat pack and Marrar Hotel six pack awards respectively. Sorry, I donl have any of the 17's best players but I will get together with Pricey and make sure we start mentioning some of the boys in future reports. Our Netballers had a good weekend ·winning all three grades against the improving East Wagga gins. The Baby Bombers did not have a game last weekend and will be refreshed for today's game. Kirsty Setgert took out the best player award in C Grade and Emma Taylor blitzed lhe field in the B Grade game. The A Graders could not distinguish one best player and shared the award between Bee Meichel, Kristen McKenzie and Tara Taylor who all had strong games on the day.On the social scene don't forget the Masquerade Ball being neld at the Marrar Hall next Saturday commencing at 6.00pm. Tickets are $45 each and I have no doubt n will be one of those nights to remember. As a special note, Mick "Handyman' VValker has advised that he is giving up his second job deaning gutters. Even though he was pretty "handy" at this job he felt he could never work his way "up the ladder' and would probably end up ' in the gutter'. He apologises to anyone he had offered his se<Vices to prior to his career ending decision. Our match today will be against the North Wagga Saints who are not too happy ·with their surprise loss last week. Smithers wou'd still be ' spitting chips" and will be expecting a far better effort from his boys today. Deano is very aware of this and has told everyone to

Even though we have not been able to field a full team at any stage of the season so far, the Seniors and Two's have been playing as one unit and any of the boys that have been asked to step up and play Seniors, have done so very successfully. As our catchcry has been all season. make th,s your best personal game for the season, look after your mates and get out there and enjoy the greatest game nf all GO THE MIGHTY BOMBERSlll!II!
