Q: What would you say to someone buying an in-foal mare and what advice would you give them to maximize the upside on the resulting foal?

A: “I would tell them to strongly consider sending that mare to New York. The opportunities there to produce a quality foal are tremendous. The financial incentives are tremendous in terms of the breeder awards that are available there, and if you’re breeding to race the opportunities on the race track are unparalleled throughout any of the states that we do business in.” — President & CEO of Fasig-Tipton Boyd Browning

RUNHAPPY RETIRED, TO STAND AT CLAIBORNEBy BloodHorse Staff

Gallery Racing announced Nov. 12 that 2015 champion sprinter Runhappy has been retired

from racing and will enter stud at Claiborne Farm in 2017, where his first-season fee is set at $25,000.

Undefeated in sprint competition, Runhappy won at six different tracks. He won on both all-weather and on dirt surfaces labeled fast, sloppy, and muddy.

A breakout winner in his 2-year-old debut by 8 1/4 lengths, Runhappy continued his dominance at 3, winning six of his seven starts en route to an Eclipse Award for champion sprinter.

His winning performances included a resounding four-length victory in the Ketel One King's Bishop Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course, in which he stopped the clock in a stakes-record time of 1:20.54 for seven furlongs. It was the fastest running of the King's Bishop in the race's 32-year history.

In his next start, the Phoenix Stakes (gr. III) at Keeneland, Runhappy prevailed on a sloppy track over reigning sprint champion Work All Week and the speedy multiple grade I winner A.P. Indian.

Later that month, he returned to Keeneland for the Breeders' Cup. Facing a 14-horse field that included four-time grade I winner Private Zone, Runhappy closed with determination to win the TwinSpires Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I), completing six furlongs in 1:08.54, a track record.

Runhappy finished his 3-year-old campaign with another decisive victory, this time by 3 1/2 lengths in the Malibu Stakes (gr. I) at Santa Anita Park Dec. 26.

The victory in the Malibu was Runhappy's sixth win in a row and third grade I score. His efforts earned him nominations for three Eclipse Awards: champion sprinter, champion 3-year-old male, and Horse of the Year.

"The decision to retire Runhappy was both difficult and easy," said owner Jim McIngvale. "On one hand, we wish he could run forever. This is by far the most incredible horse we've ever owned, and he's brought so much joy to our family and his fans.

"But on the other hand, we've always pledged to do what's best for the health and happiness of Runhappy. For that reason, we put our strong emotional attachments

aside and decided to retire him from racing. Now we're filled with gratitude and enthusiasm watching Runhappy move into the same stall occupied by Secretariat, Unbridled, Easy Goer, and Bold Ruler to begin his stud career at the world-renowned Claiborne Farm."

Bred in Kentucky by Wayne, Gray, and Bryan Lyster, the 4-year-old son of Super Saver was purchased by McIngvale for $200,000 at the 2013 Keeneland September Sale. He is the first foal out of the Broken Vow mare Bella Jolie.

In 10 starts from ages 2 to 4, Runhappy earned $1,496,250. His final two starts and only races as a 4-year-old were both at a mile. His 2016 debut was a fourth-place run in the Ack Ack Handicap (gr. III), and he ended his career with an eighth in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (gr. I).

"We are thrilled and honored to welcome Runhappy to Claiborne," said Claiborne Farm representative Bernie Sams. "He came out of his last race healthy and sound, but everyone felt the timing was right. He is one of the most impressive racehorses I have ever seen, and when you start to dig into his pedigree, it's no surprise why he was so successful. We obviously have a great deal of confidence that he'll pass his tremendous speed onto his progeny." BH

SALES UPDATE

BENOIT STRIKES AGAIN FOR QUALITY AT KEENELANDBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

For the second day in a row, Louisiana's Evelyn Benoit struck for a high-priced mare to breed to

her stallion Star Guitar, going to $550,000 for the durable runner Five Star Momma during the fifth ses-sion of Keeneland's November breeding stock sale.

Sold in foal to top WinStar Farm stallion Tiznow, Five Star Momma topped the Nov. 12 session, in which the sale enters a new realm, beginning Book 3 after the best lots in the auction were offered in Books 1 and 2.

Once again, the weather in the Bluegrass was resplendent Saturday, as a broad-based buying bench competed for the offerings perceived to be the best on the day, resulting in average and median price increases.

Keeneland reported 236 head grossed $14,099,000, compared with the $13,975,700 paid for 226 a year ago. The average and median prices of $61,839 and $47,000 were up 3.5% and 4.4%, respectively. From 420 cataloged for the day, 72 were withdrawn, with the resulting 122 horses not sold coming out to a 35% RNA rate, up from the 27.4% figure a year ago.

Through five sessions, the sale is on nearly even terms with 2015. Keeneland reported gross receipts of $169,809,200 for the 921 sold to date, compared with $178,778,000 for 968 sold during last year's first session. This year's cumulative average is $184,375, not far off the 2015 average of $184,688. The $95,000 median is down slightly from the $100,000 figure of a year ago.

From 1,729 horses cataloged, 395 have been withdrawn and 413 (31%) have been bought back, compared with a 27.5% cumulative five-session RNA rate a year ago.

Kentucky horseman James Keogh signed the ticket on behalf of Benoit's Star Guitar Inc. for Five Star Momma, after going to $850,000 Friday to get the multiple stakes winner and graded stakes-

placed mare Moment of Majesty.Keogh said Benoit is buying high-quality

mares to breed to Star Guitar, the all-time leading Louisiana-bred earner who is off to a fast start at stud, with two winners from six starters in his first crop to race this year. Star Guitar stands at Clear Creek Stud in Louisiana for a $4,000 fee.

Consigned by Select Sales, agent, Five Star Momma won or placed in 15 of her 22 starts, with two stakes included among her five wins, en route to earning $425,913. The daughter of Five Star Day also placed in four graded stakes, including the grade II Inside Information.

The mare's dam, the winning Nureyev mare Momma in Law, was produced from grade I-placed Infringe and is a full sister to grade III winner England's Rose. Although it doesn't show on the catalog page, the mare's extended female family includes influential broodmare Mumtaz Mahal, according to Keogh.

"She's a really, really nice mare and we're very glad to get her," said Keogh, who operates Grovendale. "She was a high-class mare who carried her form from ages 2 to 5. She was sound and she was fast. It's a really important female family. I just believe in these old pedigrees."

Keogh also said the mare's first foal, a Violence colt sold for $275,000 just after his dam, "is as good of a foal as I've seen all week."(continued on page 9)

SALES UPDATE

Another plus for the mare was her status of being in foal to two-time Horse of the Year Tiznow.

"He's a proven horse and you would love to have a racehorse sired by him," Keogh said.

The day's second-highest price was the $360,000 paid by Machmer Hall for 6-year-old stakes-placed Addison Run. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, the mare is out of the Touch Gold mare Fleet and Fancy, a half sister to champion 2-year-colt and sire Midshipman and to grade II winner Fast Cookie, the dam of grade I winner Frosted.

Machmer Hall's Carrie Brogden said she has an affinity for Unbridled's Song mares, noting this is the 23rd daughter of the former leading sire she has bought.

"They've been good to me—God bless, they've been good to me," said Brogden, who is also a partner in Select Sales, which sold the day's session topper. "I bought a barren Unbridled's Song mare for $30,000 (Provocative), we bred her to Into Mischief, and we sold the foal (today) for $170,000. I'm just a huge fan of him. We had a really good year and our broodmare band is getting to be special. You've got to go back to what you believe in as you start to build your program."

Addison Run is carrying a foal by Constitution, the multiple grade I-winning son of Tapit who entered stud this year at WinStar for a $25,000 fee. Brogden said she did not know who the mare will be bred to in 2017.

"I'm a big fan of Constitution. We're very close friends with the Gulatts and I remember when Randy was raving to me about him as a yearling," she said, referring to Randy Gulatt, manager of Twin Creeks Racing, which co-owns Constitution.

Addison Run's first foal, a son of Street Sense born Feb. 8 of this year, went through the ring following his dam, fetching a price of $110,000. Brogden said being able to see the colt was a factor

in going to the level she did to acquire the mare."I thought her Street Sense foal was gorgeous,"

she said. "He didn't have perfect vetting, so I knew he wouldn't break out completely (in the bidding). It's just one of those things where I realize she brought a premium, but to have a first foal to look like (that) was pretty impressive.

"There are several of them where I have gotten off them, because their babies next to them were not impressive."

Machmer Hall was the session's leading buyer, purchasing five horses for $569,000.

Taylor Made ranked as the day's top consignor, selling 33 horses for $2,548,000.

The sale continues daily through Nov. 20, with sessions beginning at 10 a.m. ET. BH

"He was going pretty easy and I just let him do his thing," Rosario said. "It's exactly how he likes to go. We stayed up front and it looked like easy fractions and it left him with something in the end."

STICKSSTATELYDUDE REMAINS PERFECT IN NEW YORKBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

Sticksstatelydude has raced at seven different race-tracks and in four different states, but does his best

in one—the Empire State. It's not that the 3-year-old First Dude colt runs poorly

other places—he finished second in the Oklahoma Derby (gr. III) Sept. 25 at Remington Park—but he pushed his record to a perfect three-for-three in New York Nov. 12 in the $150,000 Discovery Handicap (gr. III) at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Sticksstatelydude took the lead early and never relented in the 1 1/8-mile dirt test. He set fractions of :24.29, :49.21, and 1:13.87, maintaining a length to a half-length advantage. Longshot Neolithic provided the only challenge and moved alongside in the stretch, but could not go by as the favorites toiled behind.

The Kiaran McLaughlin trainee hit the wire in 1:50.58 under jockey Joel Rosario to secure his first stakes win.

"So when he broke well and went on with him, it was a great effort. The fractions weren't too fast and everything went well, and this was a nice group of horses. We're proud of him."

My Man Sam closed from last in the field of nine to win a photo for third with Adulator. Favored Gift Box, Sunny Ridge, Governor Malibu, Wild About Deb, and Vulcan's Forge completed the order of finish.

Off at 6-1, the winner paid $14.40, $6.80, and $4.80 across the board. Neolithic delivered $17.20 and $10.80, and My Man Sam brought $4.70.

Bred in Kentucky by Canyon Lake Thoroughbreds out of the Gilded Time mare Placerita, Sticksstatelydude now has a 3-3-0 record from eight starts for owners Ferris Haynes, Pack Pride Racing, M. Haynes, and B. Ward. BH

Sticksstatelydude broke his maiden at Saratoga Race Course in August of 2015 and won an allowance race at Belmont Park July 15 to complete his New York Racing Association trifecta.

"It was a great race. Greg (Burchell) has trained him most of the time, and sends him up here and we switch back and forth, but he's done a great job," McLaughlin said. "We talked and thought there wasn't much pace after (Hot Seat) scratched, so we told Joel, 'If they let you go to the lead, do your thing' and he said he'd be first or second.

BIGGER PICTURE GETS GRADED VICTORYBy Claire Novakt @BH_CNovak

Bigger Picture picked up his first graded victory and held off accomplished rivals to get the job done

Nov. 12 at Aqueduct Racetrack, winning the $200,000 Red Smith Handicap (gr. IIIT) over Danish Dynaformer and Wake Forest.

Running for Three Diamonds Farm and trainer Mike Maker, the 5-year-old Badge of Silver gelding closed from sixth early on and inched away to a 1 1/4-length score in a final time of 2:15.46 for the 1 3/8-mile test on firm turf. He came into the race off a runner-up finish by a nose in the Oct. 20 Sycamore Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Keeneland.

"I felt if I made a move I could get in a good position on the turn," said winning rider Jose Ortiz. "I just felt like doing it and it worked out perfectly. They went slow, but I could've stayed back, because my horse was very relaxed. I made him go a little bit and got great position on the turn."

I'll Call set an easy tempo in the Red Smith, putting up fractions of :25.14, :49.80, 1:15.18, and 1:39.39 through

a mile before fading to seventh in a field of 11. Bigger Picture took over with a three-wide move and had enough to foil the closing bids of Danish Dynaformer, who rallied from 10th with good energy, and grade I winner Wake Forest, who willingly closed in upper stretch after swinging for home five wide.

"I knew Johnny (Velasquez, aboard Danish Dynaformer) was coming from the outside, but we entered the stretch and I let him go, and he responded," Ortiz said. "He's a very game horse. When he felt (Danish Dynaformer) coming toward him he flicked his ears and tried to kick on."

Bigger Picture, off at odds of 9-1, paid $21.40 on a $2 win wager and has finished in the money in six of his last eight starts.

Following the top three home were Arties Silver Mine, Up With the Birds, Messi, I'll Call, Tale of Fancy, Biz The Nurse, Smooth Daddy, and Rum Tum Tugger. Tommy Macho, a main-track only entry, was scratched.

Bred in Kentucky by Ken and Sarah Ramsey out of the winning Honour and Glory mare Glory Dancer, Bigger Picture began his career racing for his breeders and Maker, but changed hands multiple times in

the claiming ranks. He was obtained by Maker again for Three Diamonds in November of 2015 for $32,000, and returned from a layoff to win back-to-back races this spring. Since returning to Maker he has won four of his seven starts. He has an overall 8-4-1 record from 20 races for earnings of $464,735.

The Red Smith was named in honor of the 1976 Pulitzer Prize winner for distinguished commentary. Smith, a sports columnist, covered many events, including horse racing, in a 55-year career, writing for publications such as the New York Herald Tribune and the New York Times. BH

HAY DAKOTA CHARGES TO COMMONWEALTH WINBy BloodHorse Staff

Alice Metler's Chicago invader Hay Dakota charged home down the center of Churchill Downs' Matt

Winn turf course under jockey Denny Velazquez to upset 3-1 favorite Bondurant by a neck in the $100,000 Commonwealth Turf (gr. IIIT) for 3-year-olds Nov. 12.

Scholar Athlete, who led until the final yards, was another half-length back in third.

Sent to post at odds of 29-1 in a field of 11 for the 1 1/16-mile event, Hay Dakota was third-to-last at the top of the stretch but swung wide to deliver his late kick. He outran Bondurant at the finish to stop the clock in 1:43.60 over firm turf.

The gelded son of Haynesfield registered his first graded stakes win and gave Velazquez, who began riding in 2010, and 26-year trainer Joel Berndt their first graded stakes wins.

"This was one of my things to accomplish," Berndt said. "I've won some training titles and won some stakes races, but I thought, 'What's next on my to-do list in my career?' and of course it was to win a graded stakes race and to do it here at Churchill Downs is very special for me."

The victory increased Hay Dakota's earnings to $137,090 with a record of 4-1-3 in 11 starts.

Maryland shipper Scholar Athlete, ridden by Angel Cruz, nearly won in gate-to-wire fashion after setting the pace with fractions of :24.04, :48.88, 1:14.17, and 1:37.76 through a mile.

"Coming to the stretch, I had horse and I asked him, and he responded," Cruz said. "He just got outrun by a couple of horses that had more than me."

As Scholar Athlete dictated the pace, Bondurant raced in the clear on the outside near the back of the pack, with Hay Dakota just to his inside. Both horses commenced their moves on the far turn, but it was the extremely wide Hay Dakota who prevailed at the wire. He returned $60.20, $23.40 and $11.60. Bondurant brought $5.20 and $3.80, and Scholar Athlete paid $3.60.

It was another neck back to Zapperini, who was followed in order by Sir Dudley Digges,

Ikerrin Road, One Mean Man, Blackout, Discreetness, Tizzarunner, and Surgical Strike.

Prior to the Commonwealth Turf, Hay Dakota won an allowance/optional claiming event Oct. 19 going 1 1/16 miles on turf over his home track at Hawthorne Race Course. In late August, he finished third and was only beaten a neck by One Mean Man in the $200,000 Mystic Lake Derby at Canterbury Park, which encouraged Berndt to try the Commonwealth Turf after a recent Hawthorne allowance race didn't fill.

"I thought he had a shot, gauging off of One Mean Man, and he was beating older horses up at Canterbury Park and Hawthorne," Berndt said. "We were so far back that day in the Mystic Lake Derby and it was all speed that was winning that day. Maybe just one more jump would've helped us out.

"I've never won a race at Churchill Downs, let alone a graded stakes race, so to be able to say that I accomplished that is pretty awesome."

Hay Dakota, out of the Harlan's Holiday mare Church by the Sea, was bred in Kentucky by the Commonwealth's former Gov. Brereton C. Jones. He was a $47,000 purchase by Stewart Mettler from Jones' consignment to the 2013 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. BH

GHOSTLY PRESENCE UPSETS PRINCESS ELIZABETHBy Erin Sheat @BH_EShea

Chiefswood Stable's homebred Ghostly Presence got up in the final strides to catch heavy favorite

Enstone in the $250,000 Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Woodbine Nov. 12.

Front-running Enstone, under jockey Patrick Husbands, set an easy pace with fractions of :24.76, :49:03, 1:13.50, and 1:37.68 through a mile. She opened up by 4 1/2 lengths on the backside before the field of Canadian-bred, 2-year-old fillies started gaining ground on her around the turn for home in the 1 1/16-mile contest.

Ghostly Presence, a 19-1 longshot ridden by jockey Steve Bahen, stalked the pace and drove to the wire to catch Enstone and win by a half-length in a final time of 1:43.90 for trainer Roger Attfield. Mythical Mission finished third, 2 3/4 lengths behind the runner-up. Both Mythical Mission and Enstone entered off victories over the Woodbine all-weather track.

"(Attfield) said she had some speed and to just try to get over and get position leaving from the outside," Bahen said of the instructions given for his mount, who broke from post 10.

The winner returned $41, $15.70, and $8 across the board. Enstone brought $4 and $2.80, and Mythical Mission paid $3. Spring Tempest, Missy Crissy, Cindervella, China Rider, Erin Commodity, Lemon Zip, Crumlin Queen, and Evil Woman rounded out the order of finish.

It was the second win for Ghostly Presence, who scored by eight lengths in her first start, a six-furlong maiden special weight

at Woodbine Aug. 13. The daughter of Ghostzapper entered the Princess Elizabeth off a fourth-place run in a Oct. 21 off-the-turf allowance race at 1 1/16 miles, which was won by Mythical Mission. Before that, Ghostly Presence finished fifth, out of a field of six, in the Sept. 10 Ontario Debutante Stakes at six furlongs.

"I thought her last race was a really good race," Attfield said. "She didn't have a very good trip, did she? I kind of liked her in here and then we drew the outside, and I really don't like the outside position on this track going a mile and a sixteenth.

"She had enough speed to get out and get over before the turn without having to use her. From then on out, I was happy with where she was in the race. She's a nice little filly."

Bred in Ontario, 2-year-old Ghostly Precense is the first runner and the first winner out of the unraced Canadian-bred Distorted Humor mare Five N Forty.

Ghostly Presence's sire Ghostzapper currently sits at No. 20 in the national sire rankings this year, led by multiple graded stakes winner Paulassilverlining. He has sired 51 stakes winners from 453 runners worldwide. He stood in 2016 for $75,000 at Adena Springs in Kentucky. BH

MR. JORDAN SETS TRACK RECORD IN FLORIDABy BloodHorse Staff

Mr. Jordan more than lived up to his 1-2 favoritism in the $100,000 Sunshine Millions Classic Preview

Nov. 12, with a 3 3/4-length, track-record-setting victory at Gulfstream Park West.

Trained by Eddie Plesa Jr., the 4-year-old son of Kantharos ran the 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.52 to eclipse Castlebrook's 2001 clocking of 1:42.55, stamping himself as the leading candidate for the $250,000 Sunshine Millions Classic at Gulfstream Park Jan.21. The Classic Preview was featured on a program of seven stakes for Florida-bred horses Saturday.

A two-time stakes winner at Gulfstream Park West during his 2-year-old season, the speedy Mr. Jordan demonstrated an added dimension Saturday when he rated off the early pace contested by Piloting and J S Bach. Under the guidance of jockey Paco Lopez, Mr. Jordan settled several lengths behind the dueling pacesetters heading into the far turn before he angled to the outside for the stretch drive. The graded stakes

winner surged in the middle of the racetrack to win going away without requiring much encouragement from Lopez, who also won the Juvenile Fillies Sprint with R Angel Katelyn and the Sunshine Millions Turf Preview with Compelled.

"As he's matured. As he's gotten older, he's learned to rate behind horses," Plesa said. "Some horses get better with age. Some of them hit their peak at 2 and never go on. It looks like he's the first choice, so we're just thankful."

Mr. Jordan's much-improved performance in recent starts, including a nine-length victory in a Parx Racing allowance race last time out, can be attributed to a pair of factors, including being gelded July 17.

"It has a way of calming horses and settling them down. Certainly his demeanor has changed," Plesa said.

Mr. Jordan was also compromised by a chronic foot issue that has recently been resolved.

"It forced me to run him in races that he wasn't a dead-fit horse," said Plesa, whose striking gray had been coming up short in the stretch. "That was the biggest problem. Finally, we got the foot resolved and his last three races were the first races that I felt he

was 110% for. He's been doing as good as he can be from a fitness level and a soundness level."

Owned by Plesa's wife, Laurie, along with longtime clients David Melin and Leon Ellman, Mr. Jordan's bankroll swelled to $513,735 with the $60,140 winner's share of the purse. Piloting held on for second under jockey Luca Panici, 2 1/4 lengths clear of 2015 Classic Preview winner Saraguaro.

Other stakes winners on the card were Moment of Delight (Millions Distaff Preview); Squadron (Juvenile Turf Stakes); Sweetontheladies (Juvenile Sprint Stakes); and Enterprising (Millions Turf Preview). BH

THREE RULES POINTS TOWARD HOLY BULL STAKESBy BloodHorse Staff

Shade Tree Thoroughbreds' multiple stakes-winning homebred Three Rules will get a short break before

being pointed to Gulfstream Park's series of stakes races for 3-year-olds leading up to the April 1 Florida Derby (gr. I).

Trainer Jose Pinchin said the Gone Astray colt returned to South Florida Nov. 9, four days after suffering his first loss in six starts in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) Nov. 5 at Santa Anita Park.

"Everything went smooth. He came out of the race 100% sound, which was the main thing. The trip was a good experience. He got to compete at the top level," Pinchin said. "The experience he got will help him so much."

In the Juvenile, Three Rules raced three wide chasing the leaders through opening fractions of :23.05 and :46.60 before tiring to sixth, beaten 14 3/4 lengths. He finished ahead of grade I winners Gormley and Klimt, along with grade III winner Theory.

"He ran good. He had a hard time," Pinchin said. "He had to van 29 hours to Louisville and then fly to California. He didn't (train) for five days and he was a little bit dull. He broke bad for the first time in his life, but it is what it is.

"You're running against the best of the best," he added. "They say this crop of 2-year-olds is the best in 10 years. The fractions were fast. He didn't disgrace himself. He had some grade I winners behind him."

Three Rules won his first five races by a combined 31 lengths. His first time out he won a maiden special weight June 10 at Gulfstream by 3 1/2 lengths, defeating grade II winner Gunnevera. In his first stakes try, he won the July 2 Birdonthewire Stakes by five lengths before sweeping all three of the Florida Sire Stakes by a combined 22 1/2 lengths. All five of his wins have come at Gulfstream at various distances, from five furlongs to 1 1/16 miles. The colt currently has more than $700,000 in earnings.

"He's going to be pointed for those races down here, the Holy Bull and the Florida Derby. If he's good enough, he'll go on that campaign," Pinchin said. "He'll

get 30 days off and then he'll go back in training. He will be competing against some of the same horses (as the Breeders' Cup) during the winter meet, but he'll be fine."

Gulfstream Park's stakes for 3-year-olds include the $100,000 Mucho Macho Man at one mile Jan. 7, the $350,000 Lambholm South Holy Bull (gr. II) at 1 1/16 miles Feb. 4, and the $400,000 Fountain of Youth (gr. II) at 1 1/16 miles March 4, leading up to the 1 1/8-mile Florida Derby. BH

suspensions for infractions during the Santa Anita meeting. The first will be served Nov. 13, 17, and 18. The second, which was announced Nov. 11, is set for Nov. 20, 24, and 25.

The decision was to heal the hand, serve the suspensions, and start anew for the final two weeks of the meeting, which feature six graded stakes. BH

BEJARANO OUT TWO WEEKS WITH HAND INJURYBy BloodHorse Staff

Tora Yamaguchi, agent for Rafael Bejarano, reported Nov. 12 that the perennial Del Mar riding champion

has a strained ligament in the outer portion of his right hand that is of relatively minor concern.

But the short healing process, combined with six days of suspensions Yamaguchi said will not be appealed, means the summer meeting champion for the past five years, and defending Bing Crosby meet champion, will not ride at Del Mar until Nov. 26.

Yamaguchi and Bejarano planned for Nov. 11 to be busy, with seven mounts on the nine-race opening-day program. Instead, as the result of an injury incurred during a morning workout Nov. 8 at Santa Anita Park, the day was spent seeing a hand specialist.

"The doctor said it was not a big deal," Yamaguchi said. "He has a small brace, and with three or four days wearing it, and not using the hand, it should be fine."

Bejarano is, however, facing two three-day
