Is itsnowing yet?Have you ever noticed that any large undertaking starts with a

small group of concemedmdividuals that band together? An excellent "real life" example of this is the Minnesota

Sports Turf Managers Assnciafion Chapter. This year chaptermembers, led by Mike Mcloonald, CSFtvI, will gather to improvethe condition of our of America's ballfields. Snowflakes fall.

Last month we detailed Dr. Andrew rvIcNitt's research at PermStolte on mfilled synthetic turf systems. That project, endorsed bythe SAFE Foundation, will provide much needed guidance onthe performance of mfilled systems in varying conditions. Moresnowflakes fall. The SAFE Foundation has established a review committee to

assess what projects to endorse, In fact, we have recentlly endorseda second project, "Athletic Field Establishment," led by PamSherratt at Ohio State. While we would prefer to invest financiallyin sportsturf research, we can offer our stamp of approval. Moresnowflakes.

As snowflakes continue to fall, we will be able to form a snow-ball. Once that snowball begins to roll downhill, watch out!

It may be a year or two before SAFE IS an established leader insportsturf research and education. When we "arrive" on the"research and education scene," we will be able to determinewhat problems need solutions. SAF]~was founded to be a clear-inghouse for finding solutions to these problems.

The SAFE Foundation encourages any effort, small or large, that improves ballfield conditions, Service projects like those ofthe Minnesota STMA. Chapter ore wonderful. At the same time, itwould he nice to have Luge efforts like research projects thatimpact thousands of fields. These larger projects require the coor-dinated efforts and finances of l11<1nyindividuals. The SAFEFoundation will continue fund-raising efforts that will enable largeprojects geared toward sportsturf specific research and education.Vv'e believe that research and education initiatives will have thegreatest impact on America's ballficlds

As a collective group of concerned professionals, our impact isdirectly related to the Impact each of us makes as individuals.Snowflakes in June lead to snowballs in August. As nonsensical assnow III summer lllay sound, the SAFE Foundation is forceilstinga few more snowflakes,

Contact Mike Mcfionald, CSFlvI ([email protected]) ofthe Minnesota STi'vIAChapter for more information on their SCT-

vice projects. They are accepting support through donated materi-als &- equipment.

Contact Rich King (Richrsst.omhcoxmail.corn) for infonna-tion on making contributions to or receiving research endorse-ments from the SAFE Foundation.

STMA in Action

BY BOYD MONTGOMERY, CSFM

The Ohio Sports Turf Managers Association (OSTMA) Chapter held its first Clientfor 20U3 on April ]4. The event was billed as a hands on athletic field paintingclinic and it did nol disappoint. About 42 OSTl'vlA members and non-members

participated in the clinic. There were three stations set up for this event: logo paintinghI' Jeff LImburg (Toledo Mud Hens), field lilllIlg by Darian Daily (Columbus Crew),and tricks of the track by Brian Hall (Sylvania Recreation). Participants got to demon-strate hands on pamting techniques in both JetT's and Darien's demonstrations andlearned many "innovative ideas" to help in the painting of multiple fields from Brian

The day ended with a panel discussion with Daily, Limburg, BoydMontgomery, CSFM, (Sylvania Recreation), and Brian Gimbel (Ohio StateUniversity). The weather cooperated also, providing Northwest Ohio with itsfirst 70-plus degree day of the year! ST

I I&A By DR. GRADY MILLER, PH.D., ENVIRONMENTAL HORTICULTURE DEPT., UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA

Who is on first?

Bob has some great questions, but r want-ed some additional information before Igot bnsy typing him a response I found

out that Bub's field is Tifway (419) hybridbermudagrass that IS not overseeded. Mostyears the "freeze line" doe, not go as En southas Central Florida, but I occasionally see highschool and college fields overseeded 111 theOrlando area as well as even further south. Thereason given is to provide the same striping thatis commonly seen on big-league ballpark fields.

Bob's fields are well drained and the sandysoil is not prone to compaction. This is not toouncommon for much of Florida. Along with nice weather, it seems we weregl\/en another break with our predominantly sandy soils. The last bit of addi-tional information T sought was related to Bob's irrigation system, Theresponse was positive. "I have adequate irrigation."

With Florida's sandy soils, a good irrigation system is needed to mamtamhealthy turf during dry periods. It is not unusual for our soil's field capacitymoisture content to be 8 percent. With actively growing turf, it does not takelong to pull enough w<Jterout of tlle rootzone so th.'lt you are left with droughtshessed turf.

I thought Ihad all the mformation at tIllS point to answer Bob's questionintelligently and then a thought occurred to me. "Why is he verticutting?" Bobis almost two hours south of me, \-Vhile the bennudagrass in my area !tas 1Iotyet reached iLsmaximum growth rate, Bob's has probably got a 3-weck heallstart. Most of the time Isuggest verticutting to either (a) thin out overseededgrasses or (b) reduce thatch in bennudagrass. Since Bob did not overseed, thenhe mmlneed to remove some excess LhaLch.It is best to remove thatch whenthe grass is actively growing since this can be a sign incant stress on the turf.Given the location of the field then this may be an acceptable time to com-mence with the dethatchmg.

The question of when to aerify c<Jnbe answered similarly to when to verti-cut. Aerification of ben nuda grass fields usually is jnstified for two reasons. Thefirst IS to encourage overseeded grasses to begin transitioning and secondly, to

Ocr baseball season is obolrt over and 1 havenot quite a rHon/h before we start summer boee-batt. Is there is an)' order as to which shouldcome firsl, vetticuning or aeri(ica!ioH, or does itmailer? Also, C(//1 I do both righl behind eachother or is there a time period required betweenthem71 also plan 10 do some topdressing. In thepas/l have used clean sand to topdress. Is that-all right or do you have another suggestion forour sandy Florida soils?

, alleviate compaction. This field was not over-seeded so the justification was to ullcviutc com-

," paction. Ialways tell people the best time toaerify IS whenever they can. Athletic fields arenotoriously overused so cultural practices suchas acrificarion have to be fit III between events.Sounds like Bob is on the right track trymg tofit aerification (and verticutting) III betweentwo baseball seasons.

The question of the order between the twocultural practices may be a signit,c;mt questionIII some circumstances and not in others. There arc at least a couple of equipment corn-panies that have developed these supermachines that can accomplish multiple cultur-al practices with one pass. Some can aenfy, verticut. and vacuum at the same time. Theonly signific<JTltdownfall of these pieces ofequipment rs price. While they may very wellbe cheaper than buying three pieces of equip-ment, the cost of these multiple-use machinesmay be more than some can handle.

So if you are like Bob, you have two piecesof equipment, which should you do first? Icould think of at least two scenarios that couldinfluence the order. Aerify first and the soilsurface is softer and more prone to surface dis-ruptions, To put a tractor back over the surfaceto verticut can cause rutting from the tractor's

weight. On the other hand, once you aerifv you can use your vcrtieutting tochop up your uerification cores you brought to the surface. If you verticutusing a triplex mower then the weight IS not <.1 significant factor.

From the grass' perspective Ido not think it really matters. Which is whyyou can do these practices right behind each other. What matters rs that theirrigation system works so that you can ungate the fields in the days followingthese cultivation practices. Both aerificution unrl verticutting tend to dry alltthe soil from the increased light exposure and air movement II1 the soil, alongwith the desiccation brought on through severing the turf shoots and roots.TIle turf may need some extra irngntion w:Jter applied to prevent excessive des-iccation of the turf while it is overcoming the shess.

.A,;, for the topdressing question, Iwould suggest that topdressing sandshould be physically and chemically very similar to the existing soil unless theintent is to modi~' the soil profile. If the cle;l1l s<Jmlhas been workillg welllllthe p3st, I see no reason to change. BT
