Inzenjerski projektni zavod is a company specialized in infrastructure engineering design and has been active in this field for over 60 years now. The Government of the Republic of Croatia has established IPZ in 1948 as a national company for development of all kinds of designs for roads, road structures and water engineering facilities.

Actively participating in the reconstruction of the country that has suffered huge destruction in the war and in the modernization of the traffic infrastructure in Croatia and in other countries of the former Yugoslavia,

IPZ has designed more than 50% or all roads and motorways in the Republic of Croatia, as well as the first motorway in the former Yugoslavia, several hundreds of bridges, many tunnels, several dozens of engineering structures, ranging from industrial plants to transformer stations, thousands of kilometres of water supply and sewer systems, hundreds of water tanks, etc.

An important date in the development of IPZ is the year 1993, when IPZ was privatized and transformed into a joint stock company owned by the former and present employees. Almost two decades of independent operation and growth in market conditions on both Croatian and international markets have confirmed the Company’s strength and vitality.

The organizational structure of our company is based on the specialized departments, whose specialist know-how is best manifested in teamwork and in the cooperation both within the company and with other companies. The solutions we in IPZ offer to our clients are based on our own experience and know-how and on the cooperation with our strategic partners and are therefore able to deliver complete and comprehensive designs.

In our work we are using the state-of-the-art equipment and software: for road design we use Plateia, CARD/1 and Vestra software and AutoCAD Civil3D tool for interactive modelling. Noise protection on the roads is designed in the SoundPLAN software. For design of water engineering facilities we use Hydra, Canalis, Aquaterra and WaterCAD programmes. For structural engineering we use structural analysis tools Sofistik, RM Bridge V8i, Allplan and SCIA. For reinforcement calculation and drawings we use ArmCAD and ArmCAD 2000.

URBAN ROADS

In order to avoid traffic jams in cramped spaces of dense development, urban roads must be constructed as grade separated facilities with specific shapes of span structures.

BRIDGES AND VIADUCTS

The brief review of designed structures includes only major and important recent facilities. It is therefore that hundreds of culverts of underpasses, overpasses and minor bridges constructed in the road

network of the Republic of Croatia were not included here. Our selection shows the development and acceptance of new technologies, aimed at reduction of construction and maintenance costs and at increased

durability of structures, all in compliance with stricter EU regulations.

Bridges and Viaducts of Reinforced Concrete The progress of construction technology is best shown in the review of bridges and viaducts of standard span lengths constructed of reinforced concrete - this can be observed primarily in the development of superstructure cross section, but also in the changes of the longitudinal disposition of the facility.

PREFABRICATED BRIDGE SUPERSTRUCTURESDevelopment of cross sectionUp until a few years ago almost all bridges and viaducts with standard span lengths in the motorway route were prefabricated bridge superstructures.Depending on the soil type their foundation was either shallow or drilled piles. The substructure is mostly entirely monolithic (only pier heads were sometimes constructed as semi-prefabricated). Bridge superstructures were always realized of prefabricated prestressed girders of reinforced concrete that were mostly erected by launching truss, rarely by cranes. The length of prefabricated girders ranged from 25 m to 40 m and span lengths of individual fields of such structures corresponded to the length of prefabricated girders. Span lengths of individual fields exceeding 50 m were reached only rarely, by construction

of cantilever overhangs on pier heads, into which the prefabricated girders were subsequently inserted. Initially only girders with I-shaped cross sections were used. Following the erection they were connected in the cross direction by in situ execution of joints in the upper chord level of prefabricated girders. The durability and the transversal rigidity of the integral superstructure constructed by such cross-connecting of prefabricated girders was insufficient. Transversal rigidity may be improved by subsequent implementation of rigid cross girders, but this design of structures was abandoned due to the fact that the durability of this type of connection is not satisfactory.

A significant improvement of durability has been achieved by construction of 20 - 25 cm thick slab of reinforced concrete above the upper girder surface. The result was that the durability of the superstructure of prefabricated girders became closer to the durability of the monolithic superstructure. In instances where prefabricated girders were used whose chords were not touching after assembly, soft supported reinforced-concrete sacrifice formwork was used. Further development resulted in the advent of wide flange prefabricated I-girders whose upper chords were touching after the assembly, so that no formwork is necessary for concreting of the deck slab. The most recent guidelines exclude the formerly most commonly used I-girders and instead include the rarely used passable box girders and mostly used prefabricated T-girders.

Development of longitudinal dispositionIndividual fields of the so constructed superstructures were usually connected in longitudinal direction by continuity slabs providing continuity without expansion joints along the entire structure, even on structures with length exceeding 500 m. Continuity slabs provide driving comfort; they transmit horizontal forces, but do not transmit moments from one field to another. In terms of statics, such structures are composed of a series of simple grid structures. Through further development continuity slabs evolved into a strong transverse bond, whereby the entire superstructure became a continuous girder of a series of grid structures.

The above-described development resulted in significantly improved durability. Limitation factors of this technology are span lengths of individual fields – they are limited to maximally ca 40 m. Construction of larger spans is too expensive and thus not acceptable. In view of the increased labour price even the realization of standard span lengths becomes expensive due to the large share of labour price in the overall price of structures.

EXAMPLES OF LONGITUDINAL DISPOSITION

MONOLITHIC SUPERSTRUCTURESThe decreased share of price of human labour in the overall price of the structure is a result of modern technologies for construction of monolithic superstructures, in the first line the incremental launching method and construction on self-supporting floating scaffold. Considering the fact that the prices of the equipment for the above construction methods have dropped significantly, the construction of monolithic superstructures is able to compete with the technology of prefabricated girders. Our designs including construction on self-supporting floating scaffold were not realized; however, the incremental launching method was applied in the construction of many long and high bridges and viaducts.

Incremental Launching TechnologyStructures with span lengths ranging from 30 m to 50 m, their overall length ranging from 300 m to as much as 940 m and their construction was even less expensive then the construction with prefabricated elements would be. As a rule, the cost effectiveness of structures constructed by incremental launching method increases with increasing span lengths, whereby the spans of 50 m are standard and economical. The expense of procuring steel nose, launching presses and braking system is soon recovered through lower cost of construction. Structures realized by this method are exceptionally durable and the closed box beneath the deck slab is favourable in case of frost.

Incremental launching method for composite superstructureMain design of composite structure has been designed that included incremental launching of the steel structure and subsequent construction of concrete deck slab on the floating scaffold for a viaduct with individual span lengths of 62.5 m and overall length of more than 900 m. This design has not yet been realized.
