Introduction

Infinite Zounds started in October 2010 as a-question-a-day blog about current affairs. Sheesh. “Current Affairs” is perhaps the least exciting phrase to describe an interest in the relentlessly remarkable world that we live in. But call it what you will, IZ is a tiny lens to peer through at it. Think of it as a daily dosage of arbit. Or an easy single to the cover region. All right, enough with the meta-fours.

IZ was designed to provide the easiest quizzing experience possible, with very little separating you from the question and its answer. In that vein and to mark 500+ days of IZ, here's “IZ 121”, a selection of 121 questions across 11 thematic groups. This is for quizzers, for the generally curious, and for the specifically furious.

Thanks are due to all IZ readers and supporters, particularly those who successfully overcame their natural inertia to point out errors and make suggestions.

Here's some more “IZ” in your Quiz.~Ramanand

How to read this book

This ebook has 11 questions from three themes each. Each question appears first, and its answer appears on the next slide. Before peeking at it, a moment to pause and ponder over the question is recommended.

There are 3 other such sets – I hope you will find it worth getting them as well.

The New York Times has launched a new India-centric blog. Its name is one that has been invoked before in relation to India and writing, and comes from a product once deeply associated with the country (though there have been claims that the product was first made in China).

Made from soot, what is the name of this product, and thus the blog? (also enabling the logo designers to use a blotchy effect for the North, thus avoiding politico-cartographic problems)

This place in Delhi used to be a large pond in the old walled city area. Some time during the 1930s, the pond was filled up so that an annual religious & cultural event could be held in that place (from which it gets its name).

Over the decades, the place has also been used for political reasons. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi isn't very happy about all this and wants to turn it into a green area where people can relax, instead of being agitated.

Which place, which was in the news for much of 2011, is this?

The word "Lokpal" (for the concept of 'ombudsman') was coined, according to Arun Jaitley, during a debate on April 3rd, 1963, by an independent MP (who, much later, joined the BJP, and also had a distinguished ambassadorial record). What?

The Makarajyothi phenomenon. Each year, a bright light is observed on Makaravillaku day on a hill near Sabarimalai, and is the highlight of the Ayyapa pilgrimage season. Popular belief has it that this is a mysterious phenomenon, but after a stampede on that day in January 2011, the HC asked for details on this. The priests involved conceded that the actual light on the hill is a man-made fire, but claim that the jyothi alludes to Sirius which is brightest that day.

Billed as the equivalent of Twenty-20 cricket in its sport, this new format for this game is designed to encourage faster play and more goals.

The number of players per team are reduced by 2 (thus giving this form its name), the match is just 15 minutes per half, and there is a "face-off" instead of a penalty shot where the striker approaches the goal (instead of taking a single shot at it) and has to beat the keeper within 8 seconds. The goal is also much wider.

This athletics rule has changed over the years. Earlier, the most number of times every participant could do something was two. The rule was then modified, apparently because TV broadcasters complained about the potential delays. So in 2001, the rule changed to a system where the first person to do so got a yellow card and the next person to do this got a red card and asked to leave.

In 2010, this rule changed again, controversially, to a harsher 'one strike and out' rule. A high-profile casualty of this rule in 2011 caused many to call for more leniency.

What rule, and who was the casualty?

What does the referee usually use it for?

When a free kick is given, there must be at least 10 yards (9.15 m) between the ball and the defenders. A common defensive tactic is to creep forward, esp. when the referee's attention is distracted, making it difficult for the free-kick taker to attempt a direct shot on goal (if possible). This has led to the introduction of an aerosol spray can that the referee can use to (temporarily) mark the 10 yard spot, thus helping to enforce the rule.

Microsoft has evolved a new "design language" (a set of principles for signs, typography, and interfaces), and applied it to its Windows Phone 7 product. The company also plans to apply to this to existing and upcoming products like Windows 8 OS.

The design aims to emphasize data and its readability while de-emphasizing UI elements such as frames. The inspiration partly came from signage seen in public transport systems, especially in the Seattle area, which no doubt also influenced the name for this design language.

What is this system called? (Question based on a suggestion by Harsh Nene)
