INFINITIVE

• A form of a verb that generally appears with the word to and acts as a noun, an adjective and an adverb.

Examples:

To go to Spain is my dream

She was happy to go.

FUNCTIONSInfinitives used as a noun:• Subject: To fly scares many people.• Direct object: With two weeks off, Nina

planned to relax.• Predicate Noun: This semester, all Joel

wanted was to pass.• Object of a Preposition: The race was

about to start.• Appositive: The suggestion, to forfeit, was

rejected.

Infinitives used as modifiers:• Adjective: The whole team displayed an

ardent desire to participate.• Adverb: The Golden Gate Bridge was a

sight that was beautiful to see.

INFINITIVE PHRASE

• An infinitive phrase is an infinitive with modifiers and/or complements all acting together as a single part of speech.

2. The doctor was known for his ability to perform surgery.

3. The bus to Houston is about to depart.

4. The wrestler was glad to win the match.

5. The future is often unpleasant to contemplate.

6. My friend bought a new coat to wear to the opera.
