A three-day exhibition and conference for librarians and information specialist was held at Hotel Istana on April 6, 2005. The exhibition and con- ference was organised by the Librarians Association of Malaysia (PPM) and Library Association of Singapore (LAS). The event was to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Malaysian Library Group (MLG), the forerunner of PPM and LAS in 1955. The theme of the commemorative Conference “Making Librarians ‘Visible’ in a ‘Virtual’ World”, focused on many challenges facing the 21st century librarians. The conference provided a forum to discuss issues on the relevancy of library professions and the role of information professionals in this IT era where information is delivered directly to the desktops of users. The exhibition also provided technology so- lutions for the emerging of digital libraries where BLIS team (sales and Infolib staff) took part as exhibitors and participants who were eager to introduce and sell BLIS to clients, mainly librarians from Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and India. The organisers hoped that PPM-LAS Conference 2005 would provide some solutions as to how library and informa- tion profession- als can equip them- selves with the knowl- edge and skills to cope with the new environ- ment, and in so doing, remain constantly ‘relevant’ or ‘visible’ in this virtual world. A police report when lodged by the state government would be the first since the Computer Crimes Bill 1997 was passed in June 1997. By breaking into the system and inserting the file, the hacker had committed two offences under the new Computer Crimes Bill 1997: • unauthorised access with intent to commit

the offence • illegal modification of data structure. Perak Menteri Besar Tan Sri Ramli Ngah Talib said on September 11, 1997 that a computer expert would be appointed to identify the "culprits" who hacked into the Perak Homepage. The Perak State Government was also contemplating taking action against the hackers under the Computer Crimes Act 1997 which provides for a fine between RM25,000 and RM150,000 or a jail term of between three to 10 years. 6 Feb. 1998 Negeri Sembilan web page hacked. Internet content provider Hijau Inovasi Technologi Sdn Bhd (HIT) president Ghazali Rahmat confirmed it. The message: "I think u really need to change this web page....it really looks ugly to me..don't u think so? -NETTACKER" was left by the hacker at the State Economic Planning Unit web page. An e-mail was received tipping HIT about the breach of security. This was the second state web site to be hacked. 9 June 2000 A cyber war has erupted at "underground" pro and anti-reformasi websites where hackers were hacking into each other's sites. Laman Reformasi, a popular pro-reformasi website was hacked by someone calling himself " Junior Hacker ". As a result of the hacking, other pages on the website could not be accessed. The website hosted on the US-based Tripod service was offline. On the opposite side, at least 11 anti-reformasi websites which are pro-Umno were hacked. Of the 415 cases reported in the first six months of 2003 - 67 per cent were in the private sector and bulk of the intrusion occurred in the financial sector. Education institutions made up 18 per cent, 10 per cent were in the Government sector and five per cent involved non-profit organisations. 20 Jan. 2004 Statistics compiled by the National ICT Security and Emergency Response Centre (Niser) showed that hundreds of websites came under attack in 2004. In January 2004, 129 websites mostly government sites were defaced by a group of South American hackers. These were among more than 200 local websites in total that were defaced in the first quarter of 2004. In August 2004, about 100 websites were attacked in an act of mass defacement perpetrated by three foreign hacker groups. Hackers were able to deface the websites largely due to insufficient security measures implemented by the operators. 4 Mar. 2005 Among the other web sites hacked since March 4, 2005 were the Perak Veterinary Department, Multimedia University, Public Works Department, Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam), National Productivity Council, United Nations Development Programmes in Malaysia, Malaysian Amateur Radio Emergency Services Society, and Islamic Information & Services Foundation (IIS). Initially, the hackers were mainly warning the web site administrators of their failure to secure their sites but the attacks took a political slant. 6 Mar. 2005 The Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) web site was hacked twice. On both occasions, hackers posted messages with political connotations based on the on-going Ops Tegas and the dispute between the oil concessions off the Sabah coast. 8 Mar. 2005 The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) site was defaced at 4am. This was detected at 6am by its server administrator. The site was taken down and repaired and it was back up again.

dengan suasana pembacaan y a n g b o l e h m e m b a n t u keseimbanagan emosi. “Kalau baca puisi atau novel kita sebenarnya sedang ‘berdialog’ dalam pembacaan. Ini memberi ketenangan terhadap minda dan pemikiran,” katanya. Sehubungan itu beliau berharap agar usaha-usaha untuk menanam minat membaca bahan seumpama itu terutama-nya di kalangan generasi muda bermula dari awal lagi. “Selain itu sistem pendidikan sedia ada seharusnya tidak h a n y a b e r o r i e n t a s i k a n peperiksaan semata-mata. Mereka perlu berfikir, bukan menghafal,” katanya lagi. Berita MBI Bil 3/2003 Terbitan Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh Cik Noor Alfitza bt. Pawan Chik Penolong Pegawai Perpustakaan

A man in a hot air balloon realized he was lost. He reduced altitude and spotted a man below. He descended a bit more and shouted, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him half an hour ago, but I don't know where I am." The man below replied, "You are in a hot air balloon hov-ering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You are be-tween 40 and 42 degrees north latitude and between 58 and 60 degrees west longitude." "You must be an engineer," said the balloonist. "I am," replied the man, "but how did you know?" "Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is I am still lost." The man below responded, "You must be a manager." "I am," replied the balloonist, "how did you know?" "Well," said the man, "you don't know where you are or where you are going. You made a promise which you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. The fact is you are exactly in the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow, it's my fault." Anonymous
