The 70:20:10 Reference Model

70% From real life and on-the-job experiences, tasks and problem solving

20% From feedback and from observing and working with others

10% From formal training such as classes or courses (both face-to-face and online) and reading

Experiential Learning

- Getting hands dirty- Simple to achieve- Brain absorb easily- Focusing on same skills going

forward- Cheape (if you don’t consider

the impact of mistakes)

Why 70:20:10

70:20:10 comes from an early study in the 90’s

(Same study repeated with a sample of female leaders provided a 55:40:5 ratio)

In reality, it’s not about trying to achieve a set ratio.

Each performance problem to be solved will have its own optimum ‘blend’ of experiential (‘70’), social (‘20’) and formal (‘10’) learning.

It’s already there

60%Surveyed organizations have stated they have adopted the 70:20:10 model, either officially or unofficially. 20% is currently undergoing organizational changes to implement it within the year.

And it works

Organizations applying new models such as 70:20:10 are consistently reporting more benefits than those who do not (*)

5x as likely to be able to attract talent

4x as likely to respond fast to business change

3x as likely to report improvements in staff motivation

2x as likely to report improvement in customer satisfaction scores

How to measure Informal (70: Experiential and 20: Social)?

Basic measurements

• How many people participated in the program?

• Did they like it?

• How did they do on the assessments after participating?

Performance measurements

• Are people better at their jobs after participating?

• Are learners getting to competency or optimal productivity faster since the informal

learning program was initiated?

Measuring 70: Experiential-specific measurement

Can you measure the following:

1. A subject matter expert’s spontaneous learning asset contribution

vs. answers provided vs. contributions from other SMEs

2. Of all questions asked of an SME, how many responses did that

SME provide?

3. On average, how well do your learners rate your SMEs?

How to measure 20: Social-specific measurement

Below are 3 key questions you can ask yourself about learner engagement.

1. Can you measure the ratio between how much a learning asset is viewed by a learner and all the content available to that learner?

2. Can you measure the time a learner spends viewing the learning asset?

3. On average, how do your learners score your learning assets? (e.g. measured by number of thumbs up/down, answers marked by “Best Answers” etc.)
