Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning (formal, non-formal and informal)

GeneralProcedures on the recognition of credits gained in previous learning are established in the regulationsfor the Recognition and Validation of Qualifications and Skills of ESTA-IPT available athttp://webmanager.ipt.pt/mgallery/default.asp?obj=4534

SpecificNot applicable.

Qualification requirements and regulations:180 ECTS credits distributed across 6 curricular semesters (3 years), each with 40 weeks of full-time study (20weeks per semester). Total study hours per year: 1620 (1 ECTS credit = 27 study hours).The course structurecomprises 6 compulsory modules per semester (except for the last one).Optional modules are distributed amongseveral semesters of the program (at least, one each semester).

Profile of the program:

The academic programme in Information and Communication Technologies from ESTA-IPT aims at deliveringqualified staff in major computer science areas particularly in IC technologies as a support to other economicactivities.

The course curriculum was designed with basis on intensive reflection by the academic staff on the field andeducational supply in IC technologies offered within IPT's region of influence and the general objectives of thepolytechnic sub-system.

The programme was designed so as to produce qualified staff with sound theoretical and practical foundations andknow-how enabling varied experiences in professional, on-the-job environments as much as possible.

Key learning outcomes:

Students are provided a solid theoretical and practical training in IC technologies.

They are prepared to perform technical and management duties within organisations or units engaged in or relyingupon the use of IC technologies.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples:

Professional prospects for graduates of this programme will depend on their academic profile.

Communication networks

Profile targeted to deal with issues related with IC technologies namely the needs for computer resources andcommunication infrastructures and to install and manage computer systems to meet those needs.

Career Prospects:

Management of computer systems from businesses engaged in activities that are not connected with informatics;

Consultancy in computer systems;

Network design, management and installation.

Information, Quality and Security systems (SIS).

As information systems take on an increasing significance, both at the level of process and business aims, the needfor security and quality increases considerably and becomes a major concern for decision-makers.

More than a mere product or technology which can be bought, used and discarded, the security of informationsystems should be viewed as mainstreamed in the company business as an ever-changing process that requires ahuge capacity to drive and manage change, both in terms of behaviours and organisational and technologicalinfrastructures.

Career Prospects:

Planners, administrators and explorers of information systems;

Security consultants;

Managers of critical information and people involved in the definition, implementation and management ofbusiness safety measures.

Webdesign, Multimedia and E-Business

Current society shows an increasing tendency to consumption and wide usage by the general population ofmultimedia devices.

Therefore, it is necessary to train qualified personnel capable of developing multimedia products and contents thatcan be applied in a wide range of businesses, public institutions, communication offices, etc.

By creating this profile we intended to keep close track of the academic pathway of the students who wish tofurther their knowledge in such topics as media, sound, image, web technologies and multimedia applications.

Career Prospects;

Applications/multimedia content production technician;

Technicians for businesses with the multimedia component;

Image and sound producers;

New technologies producers;

Development of WEB applications and products.

Access to further studies:The bachelor's degree in Information and Communication Technologies allows access to second-cycle andpostgraduate programs according to applicable admission regulations.
