Our Lifestyle

Located on the Batavia coast north of Perth, Dongara and Port Denison are two towns working together in harmony to form the Shire of Irwin. The shire currently has a population of approximately 3,800 people and covers 2,223km2. Known historically for its lobster fishing industry and broad acre farming the area has developed into a friendly coastal lifestyle community in close proximity to Geraldton. With a range of facilities including our modern Recreation Centre, a hospital, doctor, high school, excellent services and businesses and a multitude of proactive community organisations, the Shire is a progressive alternative to the hustle and bustle of city life. It's the brilliant blend of coastal and rural landscapes, the blend of new and old and the blend of lifestyle and employment opportunities that make the Shire of Irwin an enviable place to live, work and play.

Our Community

There is an abundance of community and sporting groups who offer great opportunities for people to get involved and actively participate. Groups advertise their activities in the local paper (the ‘Dongara Denison Local Rag’) which is distributed every Wednesday through local shops and businesses. They also promote their activities through their various individual websites and facebook pages where possible.

Regular events such as the monthly town markets, annual Australia Day celebrations and Easter Races ensure that all members of the community have the opportunity to come together to socialise and celebrate.

Other events on the calendar also include the Hanging of the Quilts, the Irwin District Charity Ball, Retro Festival, Port Denison Sprint and Mid West Show and Shine.

Updated information on everything happening within our Shire can be obtained by calling one of our friendly staff at the Visitors Centre on 9927 1404 or alternatively visiting www.dongaraportdenison.com.au.
