Acknowledgements

We wish to thank most sincerely all observers who kindly submitted records; in JPH's fifth annual report he would especially like to mention those few who have contributed to all five: K. G. M. Bond, the Cape Clear Bird Observatory, M. Gilligan, F.R.C.S., R. B.

Jagoe, O.J. Merne, W. J. O'Flynn, I. Rippey, Mrs. E. Tobias and of course RFH. Both this

report and that for 1978 are supported by a Lloyd Praeger grant from the Royal Irish

Academy; inadvertant omission of this fact from last year's report is sincerely regretted. All interested readers are urged to watch out for the above-mentioned migratory insect species (and any others seen) during this year and to send their records to R. F. Haynes by 30

November 1980, please at the latest. Records from anybody operating mercury vapour traps are of special interest.

CORRESPONDENCE

UNRECORDED SPERM WHALE STRANDING

Madam ? J. S. Fairley (19:447), from the discovery of the vertebra of a sperm whale Physeter catodon L. on Ballyheigue Beach (Banna Strand), Co Kerry, in October 1978, suggested the

possibility of an unrecorded stranding of the species in the district. In March 1979 I found a large cetacean rib, measuring some 2.44m around the outside edge, in the same area, which might tend to

support his inference.

URGENT REQUEST FOR OTTER INFORMATION

Madam ? I am preparing a research dissertation into the status of otters in Ireland and would be grateful for any information concerning sightings of otters, and or evidence of their presence in any part of Ireland.

In particular I would be interested to know if otters have become more scarce during the past 10 years, or do the conservation laws appear to be protecting them?

Yours etc.,

INFORMATION SOUGHT ON VIVIPAROUS LIZARDS IN NORTHERN IRELAND

Madam ? 1 am a fifteen year old schoolboy studying for O-level Geography. For my project I want to

investigate to what extent populations of the viviparous lizard, Lacerta vivipara have been influenced by human intervention in N. Ireland. In order to do this I should be grateful for any information (dates and

localities) on sightings of lizards in the Province. I would also be interested to have personal views on the state

of lizard populations in the Province.

Any information received will be gready appreciated and will be acknowledged.

Yours etc.,
