• According to FactCheck.org, 38.4 % of eligible American’s did not cast a vote in the 2008 presidential election. The contributing factor of this sad reality could be the lack of understanding when it comes to the process of electing Presidential Candidates.

• A Candidate campaigns, debates and picks up endorsements in order to win a party nomination and possibly go on to the general election in November.

• Democrats do not have a nomination process in 2012. President Obama will win re-nomination as incumbent. a Republican need 1,144 delegates to win a nomination of GOP.

What if no one reaches the necessary delegates requirement?

• The last time a brokered convention happened was in 1952 Democratic National Convention. The last time the Republicans had a brokered convention was in 1948. Dwight D. Eisenhower won 1952. Harry Truman won 1948.

A Nominee’s Task

• A presumptive nominee of a political party has to choose a running mate, who could become the Vice President of the United States of America.

Party Conventions

• Each political party will choose a cite for their Party’s convention. The party will formally nominate a candidate for the presidency and Vice Presidency. Political leaders of the party as well as the nominees themselves will make speeches to persuade voters to vote for the party.

Electoral College

• Voters around the nation vote in the first Tuesday of November of every four years for President and Vice president of the United States of America. A candidate needs 270 Electoral College Votes to be President and Vice President-Elects and be inaugurated as President and Vice President of the United States. In 2000 presidential election for example the winner of the popular votes, Vice President Al Gore lost the election to the then Governor George W. Bush due to Electoral College.

What happens with a tie Electoral College votes ?

• If any candidate fails to gain the majority of the Electoral College; the incoming members of the House of Representatives vote for the new president and the incoming United States Senate members vote for the new Vice president. If the House of Representative fails to vote for a new president by the time of inauguration of the new president; which is January 20 th of that year, the new vice president becomes the acting president until the House of Representatives select a president. If both the House of Representatives and the United States Senate fail to select their respective positions, The Speaker of the House of Representatives will become the acting president according to the line of succession for the presidency.

Finalizing the votes

• The Electoral College votes will be finalized with the joint session of congress and with the President of the Senate or the President Pro Tempore of the Senate as well as the Speaker of the House of Representative Present.

The President-elect’s first task

• The President-Elect and The Vice President-Elect will nominate cabinet members after an election victory. The United States Senate has to approve the appointed cabinet members by 60 votes filibuster-proof majority.

• The President-elect will be sworn in by the chief Justice and the Vice President-elect will be sworn in by an associate justice of the United States of America.

• The Vice President swears in the appointed and approved cabinet members to help the President lead the nation.
