Background

From its foundation, in 1888 thePontificia Universidad Católica deChile College of Engineering hasconsolidated as a prestigiousinstitution at a national and LatinAmerican level in teaching andresearch of Engineering Science.Its nine departments, in the areasof Construction and Management,Structures and Geotechnics,Hydraulics and Environment,Transportation, Industrial andSystems Engineering, Mechanicsand Metallurgy, Chemistry andBioprocess, Electrical Engineeringand Computer Science and itscenters, Mining Engineering andEnvironmental Engineering, enjoyan excellent reputation, placingthem in a leading position in theirrespective fields.The College has a permanent staffof over 100 full-time professors, ofwhich 80% have obtained doctoraldegrees from the most prestigiousuniversities worldwide. In 2003it’s teaching programs weregranted Substantial Equivalenceby the Accreditation Board ofEngineering and Technology(ABET, www.abet.org).

The mission of the College ofEngineering is to:

Infrastructure

In many areas, research equipment andfacilities are as modern and completeas those of institutions in developedcountries. In addition, the Office ofScientific and Technological Research(DICTUC), has made it possible for theCollege to contribute to the nationaltechnological development, establishingbusiness relationships with the mostimportant public and private companiesof the country.Situated on San Joaquín Campus,the College of Engineering shares,together with other university schools,modern classrooms and computerfacilities, advanced laboratories, acomplete and updated library, achapel, excellent sports field andcafeterias. It also has specializeddepartmental libraries and isconnected via Internet to most ofthe research centers and universitylibraries in the world.For these reasons, the College ofEngineering of the Pontificia UniversidadCatólica de Chile is an importantdevelopment center for Engineering inthe country and the region.

The Graduate Program at theCollege of Engineering began in 1983with the first admission processfor the Master of Science degree.Later, in September 1992, theDoctorate Program initiated itsactivities. Finally, in 2003, theMaster in Engineering was created.Today, the graduate program hasbecome the largest in Chile inthe field of technology, with a cohortof over 400 students.Recently, additional specializedprograms have been designed,responding to industry needs forcontinuous education of theirprofessionals.

Exchange Programs

The research carried out by theprofessors is another relevant aspectof the College of Engineering. Thisactivity has developed cooperationlinks with important universities andresearch institutes.Examples of these cooperation linksare the exchange programs withforeign universities such as CarnegieMellon, California Davis, UniversitéCatholique de Louvain, InstitutNational Agronomique Paris-Grignonand L’ École Polytechnique, amongothers. In these programs, graduatestudents between three and twelvemonths, work with leading groups intheir respective fields. Furthermore,the College has established doubledegree agreements with French andItalian universities. This relationshiphas improved the openness of thegraduate programs; a very desirablecharacteristic in today’s scientificcommunity.

The field of this Department is tomaterialize construction projectsthrough the study, evaluation,planning, administration and controlof the tasks required in theconstruction process.Currently we need a new type ofprofessional, more open toenterprising and innovative changes,with academic excellence andconstantly supported by newtechnologies. To achieve this goal, theDepartment provides its studentswith the necessary conditions toencourage them to fully develop theirtechnical and human capabilities, andsearch for constant improvement.

Research and Specialization areas:The Department has a vastexperience in four main lines:• Construction Materials, which

studies constitution, behavior,technology, and application ofmaterials used in Civil Engineering,such as cement concrete, asphaltand asphalt mixtures, woodand steel.

• Technology and Housing, whichincorporates technologicalrequirements oriented to improveefficiency, productivity and qualityof different types of constructionworks and to improve housinginhabitability. It also includesthemes related to application ofinformation technologies toconstruction and sustainableconstruction.

• Road Engineering, focused on thedesign, construction, managementof pavements both rigid andflexible, as well as their behaviorand rehabilitation.

The Department prepares thecountry’s most skilled professionalsin design, analysis, behavior andtechnological innovation in civilinfrastructure works. The studyprogram aims at giving students adeep understanding of fundamentalconcepts in the area of design andstructural analysis and ofgeotechnical engineering so that theybecome familiar with most moderncriteria and techniques for theirfuture professional practice. Toprovide its students with advancededucation, the Department hasmodern laboratories for Dynamic andStatic Tests, Soils Mechanics andStrong Movement Seismology. Thesefacilities provide students withcomplex equipment, such as avibrating table to reproduce theaction of a seismic movement onreduced-scale structures, testingequipment for seismic insulators andenergy dissipaters, and cyclic triaxialcutting equipment.

Research and Specialization areas:The Department has a moderncomputer infrastructure forresearch on dynamic simulationsand seismic design. This capabilityallows offering outside consultingin highly-complex technologicalproblems, and in conjunction withthe labs, certification and qualityservices, development of newmaterials, and behavior of realelements and structures.

Main areas of specialization:• Theory and Computer Analysis of

Structures, with research lines inanalytic modeling, computermethods for analysis and structuraldesign, behavior study of buildingsin case of earthquakes andsimplified analysis methods.

• Structural Design: Behaviormodeling and design of steelstructure elements, reinforcedconcrete and masonry. Revisionand critical analysis of differentcode designs is also considered.

• Structural Dynamics: Deterministicand probabilistic analysis ofstructural systems subjected todynamic loads. Development ofmethods for response calculationand for specific aspects ofbehaviors of structural systems.

• Seismic Engineering: Behavior anddesign of elements and structuressubjected to seismic loads. Studiesof strong movement and measuredresponses, studies of realmovements of instrumentedbuildings, seismic insulation andenergy dissipation.

• Experimental Analysis, based onexperimental studies on the staticand dynamic behavior of elements,structures and mechanic systemsin general.

• Geotechnical Engineering: Dynamicproperties of soils and rocks, riskevaluation of landslides andseismic design of earth structures,dams, and tailings.

The study program of thisDepartment trains civil engineers todeal with problems of planning,design and operation of hydraulicsystems and environmental control.The study program is focused onencouraging student’s creativeness,enterprising spirit, public servicevocation, and need for continuoustraining through personal study andmultidisciplinary team work. TheDepartment also seeks to preparegraduate students, and do researchdealing with emerging themes thatcontribute to the development of thecountry and to the solution ofnational problems in the field ofHydraulic and EnvironmentalEngineering.

Research and Specialization areas:The action of the Department isbased on three areas:• Experimental Hydraulics and Fluid

Mechanics, specially oriented tostudy the flow of solid-liquidmixtures, fluvial hydraulics anderosion and sedimentationprocesses in natural waterways,design of structures and hydraulicworks, urban hydraulics andrainwater management techniques.

• Hydrology and Water Resourcesfocused on mathematical modelingof the rain-runoff process andhydrologic design, probabilistichydrology and regional analysis offloods with scarce information,stochastic hydrology and droughtstudies, hydro geological studies ofgroundwater resources, and flowmodels and transport of solutes ingroundwater.

• Environmental Engineering andContamination, covering aspectsregarding treatment of wastewater,removal of contaminants, modelingmovement of contaminants in theenvironment, transportationmodels for chemicals in soils, anddevelopment of hydrological andhydro geological studies.

Its objective is to promote and performteaching, research and extension, in thescope of its discipline and logistics, aswell as in the interdisciplinary fieldsinvolved. In order to meet theprofessional requirements, theDepartment offers, at theundergraduate level, civil and industrialspecialties. The first program impliespreparing specialists in planning,design, maintenance, construction andoperation of transportationinfrastructure works. The secondprogram, seeks to prepareprofessionals capable of planning,designing and managing transportationsystems, for both people and load.

Research and Specialization areas:The research activities are oriented tothe development of methodologies andadvanced models dealing withforecasting demand for transportationservices, planning and operation oftransport networks, trafficmanagement, logistics and assessmentof transport outsourcing services. TheDepartment has working relationshipswith professors from prominent NorthAmerican and European Universitiesand has performed important jointresearch programs with internationalfunding, and FONDECYT-fundedprojects. The Department has a solidinternational prestige and consideredto be the best Ibero-AmericanDepartment in this field.

The specialization of the Department isbased on four areas:• Economics and Transport

Management, covering TransportMarket Management, DynamicInvestment Models inTransportation Systems,Preference Models and SimulationModels for Transport Planning.

• Planning and TransportationSystems Design, dealing with PublicTransportation System Design,Dynamic Network Design, Influenceof Public Transportation in TrafficModeling, and Modeling Calibrationof Traffic Simulation Models.

• Load Transportation and Logistics,which analyses goodstransportation systems at an urban,interurban and international level.Optimization of logistic operationsfor manufacturing companies andthe effects of moving hazardousloads are also studied.

• Transportation and Externalities,covering the harmful effects oftransportation on the environmentand the accidents caused by themovement of passengers and loadson a road network. In particular,advanced preference models areconsidered to estimate thewillingness to payment for reducingthese externalities.

The Department of Industrial andSystems Engineering is an academicunit dealing with innovation andmanagement theory and practice.Prepares Civil Engineers, CivilIndustrial Engineers, Masters ofScience, Masters of Science inEngineering and Doctorates inScience from Pontificia UniversidadCatólica de Chile.Teaching at the Department ofIndustrial and Systems Engineeringis oriented to provide a high-qualitypreparation in management, mainlyfocused on the areas of operationsresearch, economics andadministration.The Department contributes toprepare professionals with the seal ofPontificia Universidad Católica deChile, knowledgeable in theirprofession, change agents and leadersin a global world, inspired inChristian principles, motivated forworking in their profession, andwilling to live a moral dimension atthe service of people and society.

Research and Specialization areas:The Department does research andextension in various managementareas, such as, productionmanagement and logistics, industrialeconomics and regulation policies,economics and environmental policy,company finance, equilibrium incapital markets, managementaccounting, strategic planning,marketing, technological innovationmanagement, organizational cultureand enterprise behavior, among others.There are three large research areas:Operations Management andOperations Research; Economics andFinance, and Company Organizationand Management. The specificthemes detailed below, sometimescover more than one area.• Operations Management and

Operations Research covers,mathematical programming,stochastic models, decision-making support systems,production management, logisticsand price policies.

• The Economics and Finance area,covers themes such as ManagementAccounting, Industrial Economics,Economics and EnvironmentalPolicy, Project Evaluation,Company Finance and Regulation.

• Finally, the Company Organizationand Management area coversthemes, such as OrganizationalBehavior, Management Control,Competitive Strategy, StrategicPlanning, Marketing andManagement Support Systems.

It trains professionals to build, assessand develop Engineering projects inthe areas of mechanical,manufacturing and metallurgicalindustries.The Department offers twograduation alternatives: CivilIndustrial Engineer with a Diplomain Mechanical Engineering and CivilMechanical Engineer. Both programshave common basic courses, focusedon three main thematic areas:Manufacturing and Materials,Thermic Systems, Design andAutomation.

Research and Specialization areas:In these three areas or through acombination of them, students canalso obtain a Master or Doctor inEngineering Sciences. At present, theDepartment maintains the followingresearch lines:• Manufacturing and Materials:

studies in advanced mechanizedsmelting processes, consisting ofplastic deformation, thermictreatment, rapid prototyping,metrology.

• Thermal Systems: computer-basedcombustion modeling for design ofmore efficient and lesscontaminating equipment.Compounds Synthesis throughcombustion processes. Copperconcentrate combustion. Fireprotection engineering.

• Design and Automation: computer-based application techniques fordesign, representation, calculationand fabrication, through numerousmethods, for mechanisms anddevices, in order to obtaincompetitive products. Emphasis ison computer-controlleddevelopment of intelligent productsand systems.

This Department prepares engineersto obtain the Civil IndustrialEngineer degree, with Diplomas inChemical Engineering and BioprocessEngineering, and, in conjunction withthe Faculty of Biological Science, theCivil Biotechnology Engineeringdegree. The professionals graduatedfrom the different Diploma Programsin Civil Industrial Engineering aretrained to work in prestigious publicand private companies andinstitutions. Their simultaneouspreparation in management andtechnology allows them to makeadequate and opportune decisions,resulting in an efficient use ofresources in organizations wherehuman and material resources arecombined, as well as intechnological, economic, social andenvironmental aspects.The courses in the area of ChemicalEngineering are oriented to completethe basic preparation in aspectsrelating to design, control andoperation of productive processeswhere physical and chemicaltransformations of materials occur.The focus is on areas of transferprocesses (heat, mass andmomentum), kinetic phenomena andprocess control. The students of thisspecialty are prepared to intervene inthe design and management ofproductive processes in differenttypes of industries, such as thechemical and food industry and in theexploitation of natural resources:mining, forestry, etc.

Research and Specialization areas:The courses in the area of BioprocessEngineering prepare professionalswith a profile that benefits theapplication of Chemical Engineeringprinciples in industrial fermentations,food processing and other industriesoperating with biological materials,focused on teaching the students inbiochemistry, fluids transport (UnitOperations I), heat transfer (UnitOperations II). The students canspecialize in Foods or inBiotechnology. The graduate of thisDiploma is prepared to intervene inthe design and management ofproductive processes in differentindustries related to renewable naturalresources, foods and biotechnology,among others. Another important factis the creation of leading-edgecompanies resulting from researchbeing developed in this area.

The main objective of thisDepartment is to deliver solidknowledge in different areas ofelectrical engineering. For thispurpose, it performs differentresearch and extension activities. Tocover its students’ wide interestsefficiently, the Department grants twotitles: Civil Electrical Engineer andCivil Industrial Engineer with aDiploma in Electricity. The firstprogram allows students to studytechnological matters relating toproject execution, as well as design,development, operation andmaintenance of systems and electricand electronic devices. The secondprogram, is oriented to cover mattersregarding company management andeconomic systems from the publicand private sector, relating toelectricity and electronics. Thecommon curriculum of bothspecialties prepares competentprofessionals knowledgeable in thediverse electric engineering sciences.These include electric machinery,electric power systems, electronics,telecommunications, automaticcontrol and digital systems. Takinginto account its students’ futurework, the Department performsresearch and extension activities inclose collaboration with productionand distribution companies.

Research and Specialization areas:Topics include economical and safeoperation of electric and electronicpower systems, electric traction, datatransmission, optimal location andsimulation of communications systems,automation and process control,biomedical engineering and digitalprocessing of signals and images.The Department has the followingresearch areas:• Power engineering, which studies

the economical operation, securityservice and regulation of electricpower systems, design ofdistribution systems, active powerfilters, electric vehicles and last-generation static converters,among others.

• Electronic and CommunicationsEngineering, which studies voiceand data communications systems,modeling, analysis and simulationof digital communication systems,planning and optimal location ofresources in communication andelectronics networks applied to theindustry.

• Industrial automatics, which is incharge of automation, processcontrol, and acquisition and digitalprocessing of signals. It has amodern and exclusive nuclearmagnetic resonance lab.

Since its creation in 1983, the Departmentof Computer Science has carried outeffective research and teaching in itsundergraduate, graduate, post certificatestudy programs and continuous training,advisory and consulting services, and high-quality software development programs.To comply with this vast work area, theDepartment provides both basic andadvanced teaching in Computer Science,which allows preparing highly-skilledprofessionals capable of developing high-level computer engineering in differentareas. With this objective, it offers majorsin Civil Industrial Engineering with aspecialization in Computer Science andCivil Computer Engineering. Thedevelopment of research in specific areasof Computer Engineering is supported onMaster and Doctoral programs inEngineering Science with aspecialization in Computer Science.

Research and Specialization areas:The specialization in Computer Scienceis performed in different areas:• Systems software: various themes

relating to distributed systems,operating systems, databasesystems and computer systemsevaluation are developed.

• Software Engineering: Research isfocused on methods and tools thatallow building high-quality andlow-cost software. As a specificcase, research is performed ondevelopment and architecture ofWeb applications and ondevelopment processes speciallyadapted to these scenarios.

• Formal Logics and Artificial Intelligence:The logical fundamentals of the problem

relating to knowledge representationand its application to different problemsrelating to artificial intelligence areinvestigated, as well as, techniques andapplications regarding computerlearning and robotics.

• Educational Informatics andCollaborative Systems: Research isfocused on the use oftelecommunications, multimedia,wireless technologies and mobileplatform as teaching supporttechnology, with emphasis onelemental and high school education.

• Information Technologies: Ways ofefficient application of computingto companies are researched.Research is focused on: eBusiness,technological undertakings,information systems design(ERPs, Datawarehouses, Datamining) and management oftechnological projects.

• The Department offers extensionservices based on continuoustraining in computing andinformatics and developmentof high-technical level softwarethrough agreements withcompanies. It also performsadvisory services specialized indifferent areas, such as expertsystems, software engineering,databases, data communicationand evaluation of computer systemperformance.

The Integrated Center for Design andEngineering (CIDI) at the Faculty ofEngineering and Architecture, Designand Urban Studies, was establishedthrough a cooperative agreement inthe area of product development.The main objectives of the CIDIare to generate a research instancearound the development of productdesign; perform updated technicaland professional training, throughworkshops, courses, seminars,post-degrees and other adequateforms; and carry out extensionactivities oriented to thedevelopment of the industry.

In 2005,DICTUC gave up more than 76.000technical certificates to industries asa result of its quality certificationand laboratory evaluations.

Engineering ConsultingThe College of Engineering has 102full-time faculty members. Amongthem, 98% hold Ph.D. or Master ofScience degrees from leading U.S. andEuropean universities. As aconsequence, DICTUC is able to givehighly specialized consulting servicesto public and private institutions in themain research areas of the College ofEngineering. These services includeresearch and project development aswell as technical forensics.Throughout almost 70 years ofhistory, DICTUC has become anationwide prestigious and reliableinstitution for public and privatefields, due to its high technicalstandards and also to its seriousnessand commitment to the continuousdevelopment of Chilean society.

FIUC Alumni Foundation is a privatenon-profit institution that groupstogether graduates from the Schoolof Engineering of the PontificiaUniversidad Católica de Chile. Since1952, its aim has been assistingacademic and scientific workdeveloped by the College bycontributing funds to specificprojects. A priority of theFoundation is to provide financialsupport to meritorious studentsthrough scholarships. Anotherobjective of the Foundation is tofoster feelings of fellowship amongengineers of the Pontificia Universi-dad Católica de Chile, in order topreserve their links with theirAlma Mater.

The FIUC was the first organizationof professionals of PontificiaUniversidad Católica de Chile, so itis an inspiration and a model forsimilar institutions of other faculties.Since its beginning, FIUC hascontributed to the solution ofdifferent needs of the College ofEngineering, particularly, during aperiod when the university justreceived private funds. San Agustín Foundation was createdin 1987 by the Honorable SuperiorCouncil of the Pontificia UniversidadCatólica de Chile as DICTUCFoundation of the College ofEngineering. It is managed byprofessors and graduates from theCollege of Engineering UC. Its initialpatrimony were the profits generatedand collected during the developmentof its extension activity.In 2001, it became San AgustínFoundation, in honor of the PatronSaint of the College of Engineering.Its mission is “to foment theacademic activities of the Collegeof Engineering, in order to contributeto make the college an excellentinternational Scientific andTechnological center and an activeagent of social and economicdevelopment of Chile”.With a foundational support ofUSD $2,8 millions and due to aneffective administration of thesefunds, the Foundation has been ableto increase its patrimony to 6millions dollars during 2005.Since its beginnings, it has given anaccumulated contribution of 4,5million dollars to the development ofthe College of Engineering , helpingto develop infrastructure work,equipment, and academic training bygranting scholarships to professors tohave graduate studies in foreignuniversities, in order that they getPh degree.Due to the increasing budgetrequirements of the College ofEngineering, the foundation started in2002 a Fund Raise campaign focusmainly to cover the infrastructure ofthe College of Engineering.
