NINTRODUCT ORV
OT
This workbook is to accompany the text for units XXXIII-XL in the
ITESM Open Preparatory English series. It
nnot
be used as a text due to
the absence of explanatory material which alone is fourid in the texto It
follows the same pattern given in the text-reading (in this case
dia-
logue), comprehension, vocabulary, structure and special difficulties exer-
cises. There is one additiori, however. In the comprehensio.n .section an
exercise has been included that demands guided, creative writing on the
student s parto It is included at this time because>the pre-advanced student
mYSt begin to master writing if he or she is to be considered truly fluent
in the I~mguagein an academic or professional sense.
The conversations between the different members of the Simmons
family have been designed to give the student as r.tearas possible the re l
English language as spoken by the typical English-speaking family in daily
conversation. Whil~ the setting is in the United States, there would be
little difference if the Simmons were British, Canadian, New Zealanders
or Australians except for speciHc word differences due to differing holi-
days and traditions. This is in contrast to the less conversational but more
universal language of the text readings-a more technical and scientific
language. Both are necessary, especially when travelling on business or
pleasure. The student will also find that all the language used in this work-
book carries the contractions studied in previous and present units.
The .comprehensionsections for units 33 through 40, sections A, B
and C are based entirely on the dialogues; the vocabulary sections are
based on the dialogue and the texto The structural and special difficulties
exercises are aimost entirely based on the texto Section C of every unit is a
self-testand should be graded accordingto the tollowingscheme:
