Our Vision

▪ to facilitate the social and transformative experience of art within our community and through

this to promote reconciliation, mutual respect and tolerance.

▪ To promote, present and practice printmaking as an art form accessible to all levels of our

community including vulnerable people and communities.

▪ To consolidate Cairns as a centre of printmaking excellence.

▪ To provide access to a multi-arts workshop for printmakers and the broader creative community.

About us Inkmasters Cairns is an inclusive, not-for-profit organization with a studio space for printmakers and artists of all other disciplines, ages and ethnicities. We invite experimentation and collaboration, encourage excellence and inspire appreciation for printmaking in all its forms, traditional and contemporary, in Far North Queensland and beyond.

Background of Inkmasters Cairns Inkmasters is located in Cairns, in Tropical North Queensland, situated on the edge of the Coral Sea and the focal point of this region. It is renowned for its unique environment and it is the only place in the world where two world heritage areas meet - the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest. Incorporated in 2011 the annual program includes exhibitions, workshops, artists-in-residence and other events including InkFest, a biennial festival of all things print, established in 2012. InkFest attracts entries from around the world to the Exhibition and the BIG PRINT Community Event engages with schools, indigenous communities and the wider public from all around the region. This contributes to the development of the region as a cultural destination, which in turn will make this a richer area for residents and tourists alike.

Members and Participants InkMasters Cairns is a broad-based organisation with over 60 active members, including indigenous and non-indigenous artists and supporters. We invite the general community to participate in free art workshops and events.

Governance and Management

Our structure InkMasters Cairns Inc is an incorporated organization with a Committee of Management and appointed subcommittees, who assist in the management of exhibitions, workshops, fundraising and management of the workshop.

Presidents Report – Laurel McKenzie 2019 was a busy off-InkFest year, with multiple workshops and activities helping to expand the

knowledge and range of skills and capacities of regional artists. We continue to enhance the

reputation of our region as a centre for printmaking excellence, with our program that engages local

communities.

Amongst our skills-development activities were Bookbinding for Artists workshop with Rose Rigley in

February; Draw to Print etching workshop with Laurel McKenzie in March; Intaglio Access course over

seven weeks (Feb-Mar) with Hannah Parker; The Fine Art of Linocut Printing with Tommy Pau in July

and Cromoplaxagrafia, intaglio reduction workshop with visiting Barcelona artist Carme Dapena in

October. We hosted Print Day in May with a free workshop at InkMasters Print Workshop on 11 May

2019. As in previous years, members hosted a drop-in workshop at CIAF, where children and adults

were invited to join the fun of making monoprints and carrying away their fresh creations. A Saturday

morning Print Club was initiated by a group of members as an independent continuation of Hannah’s

Intaglio Access course.

These workshops and community engagement activities are evidence of our ongoing our commitment

to being an accessible organisation that nurtures the creative interests of people of all ages, abilities

and levels of experience, while also cultivating excellence in artistic expression in print and related

media.

Collaborative projects strengthened relationships with other arts organisations in the region.

Indigenous artists from UMI Arts took part in an extended series of workshops at IMPWorkshop called

Side by Side/Toe to Toe between March and June, tutored by Theo and accomplished artists from our

community. This project was supported by a CRC RADF grant. InkMasters also partnered with ARC

Disability Services to secure funding under CRC’s Community Grant Program for Artists First Print

Workshops in 2020. This will be a pilot project, a series of six weekly workshops in a range of print

media. The project will offer people with disabilities the opportunity to participate in the public life of

our community, gain new skills in the professional environment of IMPWorkshop and exhibit their

work in a public venue.

InkMasters attained Charitable gift status in July 2019 – a status that permits us to apply for grants we

did not previously qualify for. A separate account has been established for the receipt of charitable

and tax-deductible donations. InkMasters was also successful in attaining a CRC Arts and Culture

Infrastructure Grant for the purpose of building a storage shed adjacent to the main building at #55

Greenslopes Street. The shed has been constructed and the grant acquitted. We now have much-

needed space for the storage of equipment. Thank you to all involved in accomplishing this major

piece of infrastructure.

We were not, however, successful in attaining four-year Organisation Funding from the Australia

Council. We will have the opportunity to apply to Arts Queensland for four-year funding in 2020. It

remains our aspiration to engage people who will provide administrative and technical assistance to

our Committee.

Work has progressed on preparing our collection of prints for leasing via a PrintBank Cairns online

catalogue and payment system. Alex Steffe, photographer, has generously recorded around 200

prints, and Anne Pyle has coupled the high photographs with the artwork details. A grant will be sought

for IT and curatorial input to complete the project.

InkMasters participated for the first time in Paper Contemporary at Carriageworks in Sydney, taking a

booth with five other FNQ artists and organisations. Our successful members’ exhibition Gift From the

Sea, curated by Mary Haginikitas, was held at Vivo Palm Cove from January to March 2019. Planning

for international collaborative exhibitions commencing in 2020 continue: Thinking of Place iii involves

5 InkMasters and 90 other artists from New Zealand, Birmingham UK, Guam, Argentina, Kentucky,

Utah and San Francisco USA, Kamloops Canada, Turkey, Brazil, Denmark and Limerick UK. The 95

works will be installed at Impact 11 International Printmaking Conference in Hong Kong, Sept 2020,

then at exhibition venues in participating countries as part of an extensive touring program

accompanied by a printed catalogue. Vie du Pacifique is another international project in which we

have partnered with Migaloo Press (SE Qld) and print groups in Fiji, Hawaii, Long Beach, New Zealand

and Philippines. Exhibitions in the localities of each of the participating groups will be held through

2020/21, with 5 local artists representing InkMasters.

Planning for InkFest 2020 has commenced, with projects costed and funding applications prepared

and submitted. While the outcomes of some applications are pending at the end of 2019, CRC Local

Community Event funding of $8,500 (in-kind for the Tanks venue) and $2000 for InkFest marketing

has been secured. Venues have been confirmed and personnel for major InkFest events have also

confirmed their commitment. These include judges, Sally Foster (NGA), who will present a public talk

prior to the exhibition launch, Indigenous Art Centre Managers, BigPrint workshop tutors, Artists-in-

Residence, potential project coordinators, Get a Move-on Community Dance group and ARC

drumbeats for the BigPrint event.

REACH, Tanks Arts Centre, Cell Artspace, Indigenous Arts Centres, Dr Raya Mayo, TPG Architects,

Mitomel Printmakers and anonymous donors have made donations or committed valuable in-kind

contributions to the InkFest project. Auxiliary Design and Adrian Gibbs (videography) will also provide

in-kind support. I would like to thank our many contributors for their generosity and efforts;

InkMasters is extremely grateful.

We continue to meet our ongoing responsibilities in managing and maintaining IMPWorkshop and #55

Artspace, a gem of a facility for a regional area, and our home address. In 2019 we undertook a

working-bee day called Inky Fingers, Clean Grounds and attracted a $1000 Suncorp grant for our

efforts in making the grounds ready for cyclone season.

We continue to implement our Strategic Plan for the four years to the end of 2020.

I want to express sincere thanks to my colleagues on the Committee in their respective roles, as well

as all of the members who have volunteered their valuable time to make our projects successful. Our

local creative community has demonstrated what can be achieved with tremendous hard work,

commitment, and resourcefulness – and not a little ambition.

InkMasters will undoubtedly continue to grow in stature and its ability to foster knowledge and

appreciation of fine art printmaking and the joy of artmaking in our community and beyond.

MEMBERSHIP Membership at end of 2019 - 82. The life-enhancing secret of the Inkers is to acquaint people with a hitherto unsuspected dimension within themselves and equip them with a means of sharing it. I feel optimistic that the membership is going at least as well as previous years and I detect a possible extra flurry of interest now that we have a home and have allowed it to became something of a creative hub with interest from groups other than print makers. INFRASTRUCTURE

Quotes received for solar power & security screens applied for grants but unsuccessful - look for other sources of funding. The screen printing and litho storage shed was built by R and F Steel with infrastructure grant provided by the Cairns Regional Council.

MAINTENANCE

General A Preventative Maintenance and Inspection Schedule and Checklist created to ensure regular inspections and maintenance are undertaken at the required frequency. Thanks to the members who took part in our first quarterly cleaning bee and maintenance at #55. The overgrown garden beds from the front and back of the east side of the building are in the process of being removed as well as the stump of a large tree.

Electrical works

• Test and tag of all electrical equipment located inside of #55 was undertaken by JK Electrix

• Security Sensor lights checked, blown bulbs replaced.

3rd Party Inspections

• Fire equipment, emergency lighting and smoke alarms tested by NQ Fire Protection and batteries replaced.

• Annual pest inspection was undertaken by Flick Pest Control

• Sump was inspected by Tacoma Plumbing and at this stage it doesn’t need to be pumped, and is inspected regularly by Maintenance Officer

Projects we are looking at for the coming year

• Air conditioner cleaning and maintenance

• Painting program (internal)

• Look at funding for new kitchen or add more shelving

• Look for other sources of funding for solar and security screens

• The concrete pillars to be cleaned and maintained as per the request of CRC due to their historical significance
