Annual Easter egg hunt unites neighborhood

Hundreds of colorful plas-tic Easter eggs dotted thelawn of Al Guhin Park in
the north end of San Bernardino onSaturday, Apr. 7. Dozens ofyouth, divided into various agegroups, waited eagerly for theirturn to rush their designated grassypatches for the chance to collect asmany eggs as possible, and findthe special one that would securethem a prize.The smallest and youngest of thekids were accompanied along by aparent, many of whom exhibitedmore excitement than their con-fused and curious tots, pointing outeggs and placing them into the bas-kets themselves, pulling them bythe hand coaxing them toward thenext plastic oval.Sponsored by the Kendall HillsNeighborhood Association, theEaster egg event has been in exis-tence for over 12 years, saidKHNA Board President AmandaJacobs. The event is an annual op-portunity for the neighborhood toget together.“It’s nice to see kids and familieshaving a good time where they’resafe,” Jacobs said.Following the Easter egg huntfamilies convened at the Verde-mont Community Center & Li-brary where children wereprovided a beverage, snack and anEaster goodie bag.Raffle prizes were drawn, whichincluded a free haircut from Clip-pers, gift cards to Farmer Boys,Scandia, Ralph’s, school supplies,jewelry and more.“We look forward to this eventevery year,” said Janie Leyva, oneof roughly 40 families who at-tended the event. “This is an op-portunity to meet with people thatlive in our neighborhoods and thekids can hunt for Easter eggs in asafe environment, and they (kids)look forward to the chance to winprizes and meet new friends.”The event was funded by theKHNA through donations andmembership dues; sponsors of theevent were San Bernardino 5thWard Councilman Chas Kelley,Scandia, Farmer Boys and Clip-pers.
