CharthamChartham boasts a nice

mixture of old and new, from the roadside 18th century cottages

beside the Artichoke Inn to the bungalows nearer the river.

The River Stour divides just outside the village to provide two courses through it. In the past, those streams were sources of water power for local mills and today one of them still pro-vides some of the water for the Chartham Papers paper mill.

Paper-making has been a major occupation in Chartham for more than 600 years. In 1793 an advertisement in the London General Evening Post advertised the Chartham Mills for sale, as

‘New-built by Peter Arder, lately deceased.’ William Weatherly bought the mills in 1798 and it was a nephew of his who later introduced straw into paper-making technology for the first time.

The mills were destroyed by fire in 1857, rebuilt in 1860 and rebuilt and re-equipped again in 1949 by Wiggins Teape. In 1939 the Chartham mill was a strate-gic war-time site producing all the tracing paper Britain needed.

The Artichoke Inn at Chartham is thought to date from the 14th century and the original medi-eval character of the building was revealed during restoration in 1994, when some of the old

timbers were exposed.

Thirteenth century St Mary’s church overlooks the village green and from across the green so does timbered Bedford House, which flaunts the date 1420.

Since St Augustine’s Hospital, which used to sprawl across the hillside above Chartham village, was closed in 1993, the buildings have been demolished and the site redeveloped with homes. On balance, it is a visual improve-ment to the local scene.

Chartham boasts 18th century cottages, and a 13th century church

SmoothiesSummertime fresh fruit Smoothie recipes

experiment with your own deli-cious creations, but if you’re looking for inspiration then here are some ideas to get you started. Simply pop these into a blender, blend until smooth and serve immediately.

Note that the measurements in these recipes are a guide – feel free to add more or less! Try changing the type of fruit used or substitute different fruit juic-es. Or add yoghurt, flax seeds, wheat germ, tofu, nuts or other supplements to add extra nutri-tion to any smoothie recipe.

FOOD AND DRINK

It’s one of the biggest bat-tles that every parent has to fight – getting your kids to eat healthy food! Making

sure they get their 5-a-day has always been tricky, but help is at hand in the form of the Smoothie. In recent years the Smoothie has become hugely popular with a wide variety available in supermarkets, health food shops and cafés.

Kids love sweet tasting things and this is where the Smoothie is a winner. Easy to prepare, quick to make, sweet and tasty they’re a sure fire hit with kids. And they’re getting their daily dose of healthy fruit as well.

Whilst a large range of

Smoothies can be readily pur-chased, even brands targeted specifically at children, they can be quite expensive. But it’s really quite easy to make your own.

What Do You Need?A blender and some fruit. It’s really that simple! A heavy duty blender will serve you best, especially if you plan to use it every day and don’t want disappointed children if the machine breaks down.

Fruit can be fresh, but fro-zen fruit works just as well. Smoothie recipes can be enhanced with extra ingredi-ents such as fruit juices, milk, yoghurt or honey. You can

Games ConsoleIf your looking to buy a new games console, then this is the article to read!

The world of games con-soles is rapidly evolv-ing. If you’re looking to get a new console or

handheld gaming device, then this article can help you decide which is the right one for you.

The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are both cutting edge games consoles. Favoured by gam-ing enthusiasts, these consoles feature high resolution graph-ics and high quality digital surround sound. They are compatible with modern High Definition televisions and many games include incredibly detailed graphics and breathtak-ing immersive gameplay.

A couple of years ago however, Nintendo came along with their Wii. In terms of it’s technol-ogy, it’s in the same league as the original Xbox and the Playstation 2. Gaming enthusi-asts scoffed at the new console with it’s inferior graphics and turn of the century technology, but the Wii had a trick up its sleeve. It’s novel control system involves a television remote-

control style game controller that the player holds in their hand and waves around to simulate real world activities.

This control system made the Wii one of the easiest to use games consoles ever and it sold phenomenally well as people who wouldn’t normally go anywhere near a traditional games console suddenly discov-ered how much fun they could be. Inevitably, this concerned Microsoft and Sony and they too wanted piece of the action. So in 2010, Sony introduced the Move and Microsoft the Kinect. Sony’s Move is similar to the Wii, with a handheld motion-sensing controller, but with the added twist that the Playstation’s “Eye” camera accessory can also be used to track the movement of the device. Microsoft’s Kinect adopted a completely control-lerless approach. The kinect device is placed on top of your console or television and a set of cameras inside monitor your movements and position. To the user, it’s just like playing the Wii, except you don’t hold a

controller.

The genuinely most exciting area for games consoles at the moment is Handheld GamesThe PSP was first and was pitched at the serious gamer, with a decent sized high resolu-tion screen and a range of top quality titles to choose from. A few months later, the Nintendo DS arrived. Early in 2011, Nintendo launched the 3DS.

The real shake up has come from an unexpected source though. In recent years the popularity of smartphones has increased. These powerful pocket sized telephones also sport high resolution graphics displays and feature high power processors, making them more than capable of playing good quality games that give the PSP and DS a run for their money. These devices, including the Apple iPhone and the Google backed Android range of devices, feature App Stores - an online store accessed through your phone that allows you to buy and instantly down-load a game.

Aromatheropy Oils at HomeAromatherapy oils can also be used around the home for a range of purposes.

Many people have heard about the benefits of aroma-therapy and may

have tried it as part of a health or beauty treatment package.

There are a number of differ-ent oils available. Some are designed to lift your mood, others help you detoxify or pur-port to improve your health. Aromatherapy oils can also be used generally around the home for a range of purposes.

It’s important to ensure that

with a burner. These are avail-able in a number of different styles to suit your home décor and personal taste. Burners typically consist of a dish which sits a short distance above a tea-light candle. The oils are placed in the dish with a little water and the heat from the candle gently warms the mixture, creat-ing a scented vapour that wafts around your home.

Whilst most oils are designed to lift the mood or aid relaxation, blends can be created to help with specific areas. For example, a blend of chamomile, eucalyp-tus and lime may help to allevi-ate the symptoms of allergies or hayfever. Peppermint / men-thol, camphor, cinnamon, rose-mary or eucalyptus can bring relief for respiratory issues. Some essential oils are thought to have antibacterial or antisep-tic properties. It’s for this reason that many commercially avail-able disinfectant products have artificial pine or lavender scents added to them, as traditionally these essential oils were used to disinfect.

And if you’re feeling a little extravagant, essential oils could be added to the final rinse of your washing load to add a fresh scent that’s much less potent and more natural than the fragrances in commercial washing liquids.

you have proper aromatherapy oils or essential oils. Don’t be tempted by cheap fragrant oils, as these usually contain synthet-ics that can affect the aroma and don’t have any of the benefits.

Quality essential oils are nor-mally bought in brown or blue glass vials with drip dispensers under the lid. Once purchased, they should be stored out of direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Aromatherapy oils are most commonly used in the home

friends. We love Spain, we have been here for many years and (most of us) speak the language flu-ently. We have been lucky enough to discover some of this country’s multitude of delights, and we hope we can pass a little of that knowlege and experience on.

Starting SchoolThis is an exciting stage for children, new and exhausting information

BOOKS

ELEPHANT SOUPISBN 978-1-59078-807-3Feeling down in the dumps, a mouse longs for the comfort of elephant soup. The recipe calls for vegetables, salt, pep-per, an enormous pot, water & an elephant. After capturing the elephant, who happily cooper-ates, the mice scrub him down & gently slide him into the pot. Elephant even stirs the mixture, but as things heat up, he has second thoughts, overturns the soup pot & stomps off.

LMNO PEASISBN 978-1-4169-9141-0In this unusual alphabet book, occupations instead of animals are presented by dozens of little green peas all around 4-inch let-ters of the alphabet. From artists, acrobats, builders, bikers, and flaggers to gardeners, inventors, miners, and outlaws, they come together pursuing vigorous work. “We’re painters,/poets,/and lumbers fixing leaks./We’re pilots,/parachutists,/we’re peas and . . ./e’re unique!”

ONE TOO MANYISBN 978-0-8118-6908-9This nearly wordless counting book will captivate kids as they count each bounce of a flea at sunrise leaping around an empty water trough in the barnyard. As the day progresses & animals gather around the water trough, the flea bounces from animal to animal, corresponding to the numbered page. As the jumps increase, so do the number of animals on each page, until there is a jumble of 36 animals.

Starting school is the time when children become more aware and curious about people, places, and

things. Their social world now includes others outside the fam-ily.

They are now ready for stories that help them try on different personalities and assist them over difficult stages. They need stories whose sole purpose is fun, entertainment, and enjoy-ment.

Children at this stage enjoy see-

ing characters that take risks, gain control over their sur-roundings, and where all ends in happy ever after. Unlike pre-school books, these stories have a beginning, middle, and end.

This is an exciting age for chil-dren, full of new and exhaust-ing information. Don’t push for learning to read just yet. Listening to stories is where reading begins.

Humor and nonsense keep life in balance and are essential ingredients in children’s devel-

opment. Children need silly and absurd stories that bring forth giggles and belly laughs. They can enjoy upside down situa-tions and nonsensical stories because they know it’s only make-believe.

Growing up can be so serious at times that it is important to pre-sent humor in as many ways as possible. Hopefully, children will never lose their appetite for fun and imagination. These are the stories they will remember and pass on to following generations.
