Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Several in-mates suffered stab wounds after gangs tackled each other at the Klerksdorp Department of Correctional Services Centre on Saturday 27 June.

Different gangs were involved in the brutal fight and one inmate had to be hospitalised after suffering seri-ous wounds. The inmate, whose name is known to Lentswe, was admitted to Tshepong Hospital. He was discharged on Monday 29 June.

The Klerksdorp/ Tshepong Hospital spokesperson Nico Masiu confirmed that the hospital admitted the inmate.

According to Lentswe ’s source, gangs that were involved in the fight were Money Lovers, Crazy Dogs, Vandals, Casanova (both from Carletonville) and Ghetto Ruff.

This fight broke out after a restless week where inmates burned blankets and mattresses. Serious incidents of gang fights also erupted in Potchef-stroom Correctional Service last week where one of the inmates died.

During March this year there was a hunger strike at the Klerksdorp’s DCS by a group known as Bon Group where inmates were complaining about receiv-ing cold water and not receiving reha-bilitation and taught other skills.

They were also saying that the de-partment is only allowing them to buy from their local shop and they are not allowed to receive goods from fam-ily members. Lentswe was told that the prices of the local shop are so inflated that when you buy a 2 litre cold drink it will cost at least R22,50.

A source said: “Since there are no skills and rehabilitation at this correc-tional centre and inmates get locked as early as 14:00, it lead to a high number of inmates joining gangsterism. Their minds are not stimulated and they get bored.

“Most of the parolees from Klerks-dorp Correctional Centre are often arrested again and come back, because

while they were in prison, they did not learn anything new.”

The Acting Regional Commissioner, Sharon Kunene confirmed the death of an awaiting trail detainee at the Pot-chefstroom Remand Detention Centre.

The department says a preliminary investigation was done and a full inves-tigation will be instituted.

Kunene indicated that she cannot speculate on the reason for the death of the remand detainee as the full investi-gation must be completed.

A case was reported to the police who will also initiate their own investigation.

From the issue of cold water she said: “Klerksdorp Correctional Centre con-sists of various units and cells. Only cer-tain areas are affected by the hot water being low and not very warm.

“The contractor and Public Works are busy to repair the system (heat-ing pumps) and hot water will soon be available.” The Deputy Director Com-munication Services, Sarie Peens said: “Offenders in one section (Klerksdorp) damaged state property by burning 8 mattresses and this is unacceptable to the department. Offenders don’t have to damage state property but can follow the existing channels to lodge a com-plaint.

“On a daily basis offenders can lodge complaints to the member in the spe-cific unit and on Sundays the Head of the Correctional Centre take complaints during an arranged session. No one was injured and a case of damaging of state property was opened at the police who will investigate the reasons for damag-ing of state property and wasting of tax-payers’ money.”

Peens said an internal investigation will also be conducted and disciplinary steps will be taken against those who will be found guilty.

The department had also confirmed that there were fights and that one in-mate was admitted at the hospital and later discharged. They further said the inmate is back at the centre in a stable condition.

Lentswe, Kanana - Tubeho Jonas ‘T-Jay’ Khauoe (34) of 4821 Lesedi Street in Ext 3 Kanana passed away after a long illness of kidney failure.

T-Jay who was born in Jabulane Village in the Eastern Cape also stayed in Umu-zimuhle Village at Vaal Reefs where he attended both pri-mary and secondary schools before mo-ving to Kanana.

He was a well-known event orga-niser, athlete, and a DJ.

According to his heartbroken friend Keletso Maketela, T-Jay was an activist who also worked under Wolf Records Company.

Maketela said T-Jay worked with artists like Lvovo, Getto Lingo, Khaya, Malik, Revolution and others.

“He furthered his career by being involved in sports where he helped soccer players like Jimmy Khauleza, Banda Hla-koane, Gert Schalkwyk, Kagiso Letshoenyo, James Makaza, Benny Sechanke and others to reach profes-sional soccer level at the Free State Stars.”

Maketela said T-Jay worked with him in or-ganising events before he started his own driving school in 2008.

T-Jay is survived by two brothers, Nico and Leeto and his sister Mathapelo.

He passed away on Saturday 20 June and will be buried on Saturday 4 July in Matatiele in the Eastern Cape.

Taxi drivers were last week the target of Matlosana Traffic Officers in Operation Lokisa/Maak Reg. Traffic officers checked the validity of taxi drivers’ road transport permits. One taxi driver who tried to get away from traffic cops was arrested in Anderson Street on Friday 26 June after he failed to stop for the cops. He was fined R2 500 for operating without a permit.

Lenstwe, Klerksdorp - A num-ber of residents might soon be evicted from the houses that they are alleged to occupy il-legally.

According to the Matlosana municipality, residents from Ext 24 Jouberton, Ext 14 Kanana and Ext 3 Alabama might soon see Red Ants at their homes to evict them. On Monday 29 June, a number of residents were seen at the Klerksdorp

Magistrate Court after they were served with eviction notices by the municipality.

According to the municipal Housing Chief Admin Officer Thabo Thabeng who is now the Acting Deputy Director there are processes to be followed when residents arrive at court.

“The main applicant needs to show up or whoever was served with the notice needs to show the documents and affidavit as to how they relate with the main applicant. Most of the residents

who are visiting our offices after they were served with the notices claim to be the main ap-plicants’ relatives.

“After the processes in court we will again serve them with letters with the date of eviction.”

The residents have to be in court again on 17 August.

A resident who wants to re-main anonymous told Lentswe: “I’m one of the residents who received a notices for eviction. The place belongs to my moth-er and she passed away. The

main problem is that my mother’s surname is not the same as mine, but I will fol-low the procedure to bring the documents of proof.”

Another said: “That house belongs to my boyfriend and I was staying with him. I have to bring some documents forward, but what if my boyfriend’s family deny me access to the documents?”

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The City of Matlosana’s MMC for Infrastructure, Papi Matsepe, has applauded the newly-

launched Dr Kenneth Kaun-da District municipality call centre.

The centre is based at the

CALL CENTRE TO HELP SERVICE DELIVERY

district disaster and risk man-agement centre and was recent-ly handed over by the district executive mayor Pinky Moloi.

Matsepe said the call centre’s operations are “long overdue” and was happy that it was func-tioning at last.

“The call centre will become instrumental in making sure that our people get the right channel to report their service delivery concerns,” said Mat-sepe.

Moloi said the centre will pro-vide integrated services which are in line with the Premier’s mission and vision.

According to the centre’s ope- rational manager, Omphile Se-leke, the centre is operated by 24 agents and serves the whole district.

“We service all areas of the district. We receive calls through OTRS and all callers are given reference numbers as proof of their calls. We then compile

information and send it to con-cerned municipalities for feed-back,” said Seleke.

She said the call centre agents started training last year in June where they were taught how to operate the OTRS system.

Moloi indicated that the call centre is housed alongside the CCTV cameras which are ben-efitting Matlosana with crime prevention. Call the toll-free number 0800 00 462 with your complaint.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The SASSA voice verification line has been suspended until fur-ther notice.

This was conf i rmed to Lentswe by SASSA spokesper-son Smanga Selemeni after Lentswe received several com-plaints from social grant ben-eficiaries that there is a fault on the line.

Some people said they have been trying for more than a week but every time the line

gets “cut off ’’ after they gave their names, ID numbers and addresses.

The computer voice indicates that the request cannot be pro-cessed due to phone line over-loading, and the confirmation is not given that money will be made available.

Beneficiaries were afraid that they will not receive their grants this month. But Selemeni told Lentswe that beneficiaries will be able to access their funds

without having to call in. “We will let everyone know

when the voice verification pro-cess resumes,’’ he said.

According to Selemeni they experienced problems with the system and decided to suspend it.

SASSA announced the voice verification system early last year as a proof of life method for grant beneficiaries so they can curb fraud and illegal claims of social grants.

Lentswe, Khuma - A debate day for Khuma high schools will be held on 25 July at the Khuma Community Hall.

Get ready for Khuma debate day

A total of 12 learners will partici-pate in the debate. Seli-nah Gaje, an activator for

change drive, wants to host the debating day for all the Khuma high schools.

Gaje says that the aim of the debate is to engage the learn-ers of all four high schools in Khuma namely Thuto-Thebe Secondary School, Dirang ka Natla Comprehensive School, Borakanelo Secondary School and Vuyani Mawethu Second-

ary School. The winning school will be

given an award on the day. They invite the community to come and support the learn-ers. Entry is free of charge. The day already starts at 08:30 and will conclude approximately at 14:00. For more information contact Selina Gaje on 072 325 7911.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Be responsi-ble when using your cellular phones.

This is the warning made by the acting provincial commissioner of the NW police, Major General Jacob Tsumane, to youngsters.

“We recognise that schools are now closed and many youngsters are at home with their cellular phones. It is now that time of the year when our police stations re-ceive false calls, mostly from young ones who often misuse their cellular

phones when they are bored,” said Tsumane. He also pleaded with par-ents to educate their children on the responsible use of cellular phones.

“It is a crime to make a nuisance call to police, saying that there is a crime committed somewhere, whilst there is none. This type of calls delays the police responses to real emer-gencies and are costly to the police,” he added. “Be responsible when us-ing your cellular phones and help police to fight against criminals.”

No hoax calls - police

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - AngloGold Ashanti regrets to announce the death of an employee at Kopanang Mine.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Preparations are already lined-up for Mandela Day on 18 July.

In a number of places around the country, blankets, food and other goods will be donated to the needy in respect for former President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

In Matlosana, the local municipality, the depart-ment of Social Develop-ment and other stake-holders will collaborate with Thabo Pelesane’s Annual Charity Campaign to celebrate the day.

This year’s charity event will take place on Satur-day 11 July at Rio Casino where the Nelson Mandela Foundation CEO Sello Hatang, and ambassador to Austria Tebogo Seokolo and other dignitiaries will be part of the event.

Pelesane, who is the national ambas-sador for ‘We beat TB’ and also works for the local municipality is donating for the needy annually.

His campaign’s mission is to deepen and popularize a sustainable culture of

sharing and giving through partner-ship, while its vision is a society that

cares beyond differences. The ambassador who

also worked for the local radio station, Star FM, said all of his responsibi-lity has brought him clo-ser to harsh realities that the community is living within poverty, unemploy-ment, substance abuse, illness and lack of educa-tion.

“As I already fought TB and are cured com-pletely, I also came across so many heart breaking stories. I also realized that government cannot ad-dress all these challenges

without everyone adding a helping hand.

“I wish to pursue this campaign further so that it can grow bigger and reach the broader community mem-bers. In most cases I use my own pocket money to do this campaign, but I’m glad that other governmental depart-ments and the municipality have came on board to assist,” he said.

Lentswe, Khuma - A young gymnast is determined to make it to the top.

The 10-year-old Bhulangomsila ‘Skhokho’ Ngcengeni is a kasi boy who chooses to participate in gymnastics.

Skhokho of Extension 8, Tambo Street in Khuma is in Grade 4 at Educa-tors Primary School in Klerksdorp.

Last month he competed Klerks-dorp School of gymnastics in a second invitational competition followed by the provincial competition. He competes in level 4 artistic gymnastics 9-10 years.

Skhokho was again awarded with a gold medal. His parents, Nkosi and Nomvuyo Ngcengeni say they are happy with their talented son and want to thank his sponsors.

Nkosi said: “As Bhulangomsila is pre-

paring for the provincial competition and a North West squad selection to represent our province in the national, we again ask financial support and we are looking forward for a permanent sponsorship.”

The boy used to attend school in Khuma at Nozizwe Primary School, and his parents later decided to send him to Klerksdorp for school as he was still training at Klerksdorp School of Gym-nastics.

Speaking to the shy Skhokho he said: “I will train harder and be serious about this competition. Gymnastics is in my blood, it is what I want to do until I grow up. I have never had an injury, because I always listen to my coach’s instruc-tions.”
