Why Heat?Electricity 17.5%

Transport 27.5%

Others 9%

Heat 46%

Heating without global warming,IEA, 2014.

• Two and a half times more heat (including cooling) is consumed than electricity in the global economy

• Higher in Scotland: 55% • Heat has been ignored compared with electricity over recent years

Heat storage is the key to help Scotland move towards energy efficiency and making renewables work for us to end fuel poverty.

Page 4: Innovating to Tackle Fuel Poverty

Introducing Sunamp Heat BatteriesSunamp Heat Batteries are probably the world's most energy efficient Thermal Stores.

And they're certainly the most compact, packing in three to four times more Energy Density than hot water tanks.

High power (>30 kW per cell) means high flow rate hot water and heating on demand is assured.

Very reliable and safe. Non toxic, non flammable, >26000 cycles proven, 10 year warranty as standard (longer negotiable).

A Made-in-Scotland product enabling new solutions for energy efficiency, and fuel poverty reduction.

Real Install: The Neale Family's

Original kitchen

Step 1 – remove cupboard and move dishwasher

Step 2 – move carcass to end unit and fit SunampPV

Finished kitchen with SunampPV neatly tucked away and working with the PV panels and gas combi

Householder Comments:• Installation was smooth and very neatly done. • The lads were very helpful. • Job started after lunch and finished by the time

I came home.

Key Learnings:• Plumbing SunampPV is quick and easy• V2 was re-designed to disassemble and reassemble for

ease of install, but this is rarely needed• Electrical works and joinery often the dominant tasks• No two installs are identical• We were right to choose GSM data comms for

monitoring as can't rely on WiFi or Broadband being there

• GSM fails in some places – can't have perfect data comms

Real People – John and Jayne

Situation

The property is a three bedroom, house with 2 retired adults who are home for a large part of the day. The replaced system, required a timer to be set every time hot water was required, and was not flexible. If the tenants needed hot water out with these times it could be expensive

Sunamp’s Solution

A 4kW (approx) Solar PV array was installed, enabling the tenants to benefit from free electricity generated during the day, the Power Diverter self-consumption device monitors the generation, and diverts any excess solar generation to the SunampPV Heat Battery. This then provides hot water, on demand whenever it is required. The existing gas boiler was replaced with a new Intergas ECO RF 30 energy efficient boiler, which is used only as a back-up but can be remotely monitored.

Results

The trial had only been in place for a couple of months, and savings are still being gathered, however the tenants use a card payment meter and have been able to replace their £20 payment every two weeks to £12. Saving £208 a year if not more.

Comments

“It gets a bit to getting used to, switching on the hot tap normally you would hear the sound of the gas boiler that doesn’t happen any more”

Page 14: Innovating to Tackle Fuel Poverty

Real People – Alec and Joan

SituationThe property is a 1 bedroom, semi-detached disabled bungalow. The tenants are a retired couple who spent most time at home. In order for hot water to be used cheaply, the system would have to be on a timer setting. If hot water was required out with the set time, it would be more expensive to use.

Sunamp’s Solution

A > 4kWh Solar PV array was installed, enabling the tenants to benefit from free electricity generated during the day, the Power Diverter self-consumption device monitors the generation, and diverts any excess solar generation to the SunampPV Heat Battery. This then provides hot water, on demand whenever it is required.

Comments In comparison to the MacLean’s old system, the news system performs to a much higher standard, providing a larger quantity of hot water for a much cheaper price. Recently, Alexander and Joan have noticed a drop in the price of their bill as they have been in advance with payment on their card payment meter.

Page 15: Innovating to Tackle Fuel Poverty

Real People – The Lynne Family

Situation

The property is a 2 bedroom, semi-detached family bungalow. The tenants are a family consisting of two younger girls. Each night both the girls receive a bath and this consumes a lot of hot water and limits hot water available for use on other things.

Sunamp’s Solution

A > 4kWh Solar PV array was installed, enabling the tenants to benefit from free electricity generated during the day, the Power Diverter self-consumption device monitors the generation, and diverts any excess solar generation to 2 SunampPV Heat Batteries. This then provides hot water even when there is no generation at night. This is an off gas grid house.

ResultsThe Lynne’s have a pay as you go metre as and when they need to. As heavy water users the tenants bill should reduce by 30%.

Comments

“Our hot water is plentiful, comes out of the taps quickly and is an excellent temperature” As high water users 2 SunampPV were installed as the family use a great deal of hot water. They were placed side by side in the airing cupboard, still significantly smaller than a water tank and cupboard space is of an issue in every house

Conclusion • Developing a new product, getting regulatory approval, scaling to full

production, installing in over 650 homes – all in under 12 months! What a team!

• Team working across 'client', 'supplier', 'installers' worked for us all• New systems working well – few equipment issues, dealt with quickly – no

heat battery failures• Heat, gas and electricity savings being monitored – early indications that

many properties will see impact of 20% fuel bill reductions and some 50%• 3 years of monitoring and support ahead• Already replicated in Ongo Homes (England) and many trials under way with

other RSL's in Scotland and rest of UK• Business modelling under way to replicate with other Housing Associations &

Local Authorities
