Linkages established: The i-STED Project in NER implemented by EDI has

established various types of linkages between the entrepreneurs and support institutions. Following are the highlights of the linkages established:

[A] Technology Related:

During the period under review, numbers of initiatives were taken to help potential / existing entrepreneurs of the region to have access to the modern technology in the areas of their operations. Following are the highlights of the sector specific technology linkages established: a) Food Processing:

During the period, technology & knowledge was transferred form Indian Institute of crop processing technology, (IICPT), Regional center, Guwahati, under Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Govt. of India. for food processing sector to;

knowledge was provided by Guru Nanak Mechinical Works.

Other special features :

1. Under food processing sector innovative products like; Rice bran based pizza, birthday cake, and other bakery products have been initiated.

2. For rice mills new techniques have been given to get more clean rice & how to reduce broken rice. In addition to this, techniques to increase the life of Hauler scroll have also been demonstrated.

3. For Cane & Bamboo sector introduction of machines and cutting tools like bamboo slivers making machine & bamboo square stick making device (blade type) have been introduced to improve the quality and productivity of the enterprises.

4. For renewable sector (solar based), entrepreneurs identified under i-STED project were given technical support at NB Institute of rural technology, SELCO & some of them are in the process of setting up their Units.

Contribution of EDI : Mr. Ratan Dev Nath, age 35, class-X appeared, is an EDP

trained entrepreneur under i-STED Project, NER. As part of his training programme,

he had selected a project to manufacture innovative bakery products. Earlier he used

to produce biscuits in a traditional way in his bakery.

EDI identified a renowned food scientist in the region Mr. Jagan Mohan of Indian

Institute of Crop Processing Technology and arranged his visit to this unit to guide

him for improving quality of existing products. EDI’s technical expert Mr. K.K. Shaw

also visited his unit for technology interventions and guidance to improve the

productivity. EDI also established credit linkages with IDBI bank for loan to purchase

modern machines. To give him exposure to the modern technology available for

bakery industry, he has also been taken to Ahmedabad. Because of efforts of EDI,

Mr. Nath was able to establish linkages with IICPT-Guwahati and undergone a

technical training on Innovative bakery products. After the training, he started selling

products like rice bran based Pizza, Decorated Cakes etc. These new products have

got a good response in the local market and inspired Mr. Nath to start producing

newer products. Currently he is trying to use Rice Bran in bakery products. The

sample products are ready for testing at IICPT with EDI’s support. EDI also assisted

him in registering with DICC-Baksa and guided him in getting Food Safety License.

Contribution of EDI: Mr. Madan Das is a resident of a small village in Kamrup

district. He is 35 years old and has completed in secondary education. He used to

earn his livelihood from agriculture. The income from farming was not enough for his

family. Therefore, with a aim of starting a new business he joined a Technology

based Entrepreneurship Development Programme conducted by EDI, NER office at

Jharobari in Mirza under i-STED project. As a part of technical training he was

trained at Cane & Bamboo Technology Centre (CBTC).

After completing the training successfully and acquiring the required skills &

knowledge, Mr. Das started a small unit in Dighalkhuchi. He along with his 3

employees makes beautiful bamboo products like sofa-set, table, chair, tray, lamp-

shed, flower vase, jewelry; and sells them in local market as well as in Guwahati. He

also uses modern equipment and machines, as he has learnt about them during

TEDP. He is also trying to register his unit at DICC and preparing a loan application

under EDI’s supervision. EDI is also helping in identifying new customers & trades to

expand his business.

Outcome: New unit setup, Increase in Income by 25%.

Contribution of EDI: A Resident of Goreswar, Mr. Sajal Dev Nath used to earn his

leaving by processing paddy to obtain rice. As he was burdened with the

responsibility of his family, he could not study further after completing his higher

secondary education. At the age of 45, he decided to join EDP conducted by EDI-

NER under i-STED project. During the EDP he was able to interact with some

technical experts, and inspired from those conversations decided to upgrade his

small business.

Dr. Jagan Mohan of Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology demonstrated

the techniques to process paddy to obtain better quality rice in training programme.

Moreover, Dr. Mohan also taught him some rice based products for future

expansion. Mr. K. K. Shaw, who is EDI’s in-house technical expert, visited his unit

and showed him the techniques to achieve better performance from the existing

machinery. Using the methods taught by Mr. Shaw, he has been able to get cleaner

rice compared to earlier after milling and reduce the amount of broken rise. With the

technological assistance of Mr. Shaw and observing simple precautionary measures,

he has been able to increase the life span of machine parts like Hauler Scroll and

Plumber Block Bearing. He was also sent to some of the units in Ahmedabad

(Gujarat) to learn about modern technology usage and latest practices of rise

processing business during a study tour arranged by EDI.

Inspired by all these, Mr. Nath was determined to buy modern equipment and had

approached IDBI bank with a loan application prepared under EDI’s supervision. He

has already registered his business with DICC-Baksa as advised by EDI. Moreover,

he is working to get a Food Safety License as the inputs regarding the same have

been provided by EDI.

Outcome: Modifications in Existing Machines, Better Productivity & Increase in

Income by 30%.

Contribution of EDI: 36 years old, Mr. Champak Sarma has acquired a Master’s

degree in commerce. He used to make biscuits in old-fashioned way and sell them in

Nalbari before undergoing a training programme in entrepreneurship conducted by

EDI under i-STED Project, NER. After successfully completing the programme, he

decided to upgrade his unit and add more products to cater the market demand.

As a part of EDI’s continuous efforts to improve quality standards, a well-known food

scientist Mr. Jagan Mohan from Institute of Crop Processing Technology visited Mr.

Sarma’s unit and guided him. EDI also directed him in successfully getting a financial

support from State Bank of India, Nalbari under PMEGP scheme to buy modern

machines. Mr. K. K. Shaw, EDI’s technical expert assisted him in updating the

machinery at his unit. EDI has linked him with IICPT-Guwahati for continuous

guidance in food processing and also arranged for a technical training, due to which

he has started selling more products like Pizza and Decorated Cakes.

Increased profitability of his bakery unit & restaurant has inspired him to innovate

with his products. Currently he has prepared some sample bakery products using

rise bran which are to be tested by IICPT.

EDI encouraged him to get his business registered with DICC-Nalbari and provided

information as well as guidance for getting Food Safety License.

Contribution of EDI: After successfully completing a training programme on

Entrepreneurship Development conducted by EDI-NER office under i-STED project,

Mr. Diganta Duwarah decided to produce tea & green tea. He is 43 years old and

holds a Bachelor degree in Science. During the training he was determined to set up

a unit with modern day technology against old ones used by some the entrepreneurs

of the area.

Successful linkages have already been established under EDI’s guidance with DICC-

Tinsukia, Tea Board of India-Tinsukia and NABARD for various kinds of supports

offered by government. EDI ensured Mr. Diganta had guidance from Toklai Tea

Research Institute on production process for his start up, and assisted him in getting

financial support from Assam Gramin Vikas Bank. At present, Mr. Diganta is

producing tea & green using tea leaves from his own organic farm and has plans to

increase production in near future.

Contribution of EDI: Mrs. Lakhimai Bharali Saikia is 33 years old lady from

Mahdala village of Morigaon district. She had completed her higher secondary

education. She was running a small unit producing pickle, jam, jelly and squash

using traditional methods. As she was not satisfied with her income and wanted to

establish her business, she decided to join EDP conducted by EDI, NER office under

i-STED project. In the initial stage of training itself, she was determined to start

producing bakery items and expand her product line in processed fruit items.

She had undergone a technical training conducted at IICP-Guwahati as part of the

EDP, during which she learnt the usage of modern machines in production of bakery

and processed fruit items. After the training she started producing Litchi based drinks

as well as Pizza and Cakes. She had also been to some of the units in and around

Ahmedabad City (Gujarat) as a part of her study tour arranged by EDI, and was

benefitted from the experiences of entrepreneurs she had interacted with. EDI is

helping her in getting a loan from IDBI bank to purchase new technology for her unit.

EDI had successfully assisted her in setting up linkages with BYST-Guwahati and

NABARD-Morigaon for future assistance. She already had planned to manufacture

biscuits which have a good demand in the market.

Contribution of EDI: Before joining the Entrepreneurship Development Programme

conducted by EDI under i-STED project, 45 years old, holder of a Bachelor degree in

Arts, Mr. Saidul Haque was making biscuits and selling them. His methods of

productions were very old and profit from the business was very small. During the

training, he was exposed to different kind of bakery products, modern equipment and

latest methods of bakery business. As a result of all these efforts, he has learnt to

make items like Pizza, Customized Cakes with special decorations, New Biscuits &

Cookies.

EDI also made sure Mr. Jagan Mohan, a food scientist from Indian Institute of Crop

Processing Technology visited his unit and made suggestions to improve the quality

of the products. EDI’s technical expert Mr. K. K. Shaw also encouraged him to use

modern machinery looking at future scope of business. EDI also arranged a

exposure visit to bakery units in and around Ahmedabad (Gujarat) which helped in

understating the latest technologies and manufacturing practices in bakery business.

Because of EDI’s support he could get his unit registered with DICC-Barpeta. He

was also provided useful information and guidance for receiving Food Safety

License. EDI is also assisting Mr. Haque in getting a loan from IDBI bank to

purchase new machines to upgrade his unit. Not only that, due to EDI’s efforts, he is

successfully established linkage with IICPT-Guwahati for further guidance. His

products developed using rice bran have been sent to IICPT for testing.

Contribution of EDI: Mr. Bhaben Boro was 45 year old when he came to participate

in EDP conducted by EDI-NER office under i-STED project. He was only 10th pass

and was processing paddy with old methods to obtain rice using machines like rice

hauler and rice sheller.

He was taught methods for obtaining good quality rice and produce rise based

products by Dr. Jagan Mohan, a food scientist from Indian Institute of Crop

Processing Technology during Techno Demonstration Programme. EDI’s in-house

technical expert Mr. Shaw visited his unit and suggested him to use modern

equipment for better results. Not only that, Mr. Shaw also explained him how he

could get better performance from the existing machines. He was taught a special

technique to get cleaner rice during milling and to reduce the amount of broken rice.

Mr. Shaw specially addressed the problem of short life cycle of Hauler Scroll.

Moreover, Mr. Shaw taught him the method to increase the longevity of Plumber

Block Bearing by eliminating the wear and tear by husk and dust.

During a study visit to some of the units in and around Ahmedabad (Gujarat)

arranged by EDI, Mr. Boro was exposed to the modern technology and latest

practices followed by the entrepreneurs in the region. Not only that, EDI also

assisted him in filing a loan application to IDBI bank for purchasing new machines.

As per EDI’s advice, he has registered his unit with DICC-Baksa and planning to get

a Food Safety License.

Contribution of EDI: A small time wood worker, Mr. Amar Bharali who is 10th pass,

decided to join Technology based Entrepreneurship Development Programme

conducted at Jharobari in Mirza by EDI, NER officer under i-STED project at the age

of 40. During the training programme he acquired the skills and knowledge for

starting a unit producing Cane & Bamboo products from technical as well as

entrepreneurship experts. He also learnt the usage of hand tools like Drilling &

Polishing Machines and modern technology.

Currently he is running a small unit in Khamar manufacturing bamboo items like

sofa-set, bed, table, different types of chairs etc. with the help of 3 employees. He is

selling these products in local market to a wholesaler. EDI is guiding him in getting

his unit registered with DICC and applying for a bank loan. As advised by EDI, he is

also trying to expand his reach in newer markets.

Contribution of EDI: Mr. Nazrul Islam could not continue his study after higher

secondary due to financial problems in the family. At the age of 34, he was running a

small bakery unit. Using traditional methods, he used to prepared bakery items and

sell them in local market. After participating in EDP conducted by EDI-NER office

under i-STED project, he decided to produce existing and new products using

modern machines and latest technologies. During the EDP, he also learnt making

products like Pizza, Decorated Cakes, Biscuits, and Cookies etc. using new

methods. He was also sent to Ahmedabad (Gujarat) to understand the latest

technologies used by entrepreneurs in that part and their ways running bakery units.

To help Mr. Nazrul in improving the quality of his bakery products, EDI arranged a

visit of Mr. Jagan Mohan, a well-known food scientist of the region, working with

Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology. Mr. K. K. Shaw, EDI’s in-house

technical expert also visited his unit and encouraged him to go for automation. Mr.

Shaw also suggested the suitable machinery keeping in mind the future demand.

EDI helped him filing a loan application for buying latest equipment in IDBI Bank and

introduced him to IICPT to establish linkages for guidance in future in food

processing related matters. With improved skills, he is expanding his business in

Morigaon district. His products made from rice bran are ready and have been sent to

IICPT for testing.

Under EDI’s guidance, he has registered his unit in DICC-Morigaon and developed a

good rapport with NABARD-Morigaon. He has been provided the information related

to Food Safety License also by EDI.

Contribution of EDI: Mr. Holiram Konwar was already into business when he joined

training programmes conducted by EDI, NER office under i-STED project. His

educational qualification of higher secondary pass restricted his job opportunities at

the age of 34. His age old methods of making Incense Stick using tools like dao and

knife limited the production and hence income was very low.

Mr. Konwar not only attended the Techno Demonstration at Guru Nanak Mechincal

Works at Tinsukia, but also attended TEDP conducted at Jharobari under i-STED

project. Form these training he learnt new methods of making Incense Stick and

Tools & Machinery available for it. After interacting with the experts of different

subjects in training programmes, his confidence was very high and hence he started

a bigger manufacturing unit with latest machines like Bamboo Slice Making Machine

and Bamboo Square Stick Making Device (Blade Type). Presently he has invested

his own money and planning to apply for a bank loan with EDI’s help. He has

employed 3 persons to help him in his unit.

Outcome: Mechanization, Product Improvement, Increase in Income by 35%.
