Celebrating at the Forum

Showcasing work of Christian community At this year’s Celebrate Norwich & Norfolkevent at the Forum, we are once again lookingforward to celebrating the amazing work ofthe Christian community in our city andcounty.

That community contains many hundreds ofvolunteers who give of their time and effort tohelp others, without thought of any rewardexcept that of knowing they are serving theLord Jesus Christ in what they do.

Over the last nine years we have broughtscores of Christian organisations, charities andchurches together in the iconic Norwich land-mark that is the Forum, to celebrate all that isgood about the Norfolk Christian community.

This year we have a “Masterclass” for localchurch, Christian organisation and businessleaders given by Roy Crowne Executive Direc-

tor of HOPE and former national director ofBritish Youth For Christ.

A well-known figure in the UK Christian

community, Roy was an engineer who went onto study theology. He then worked for Youthfor Christ for 28 years.

This in the context of an exhibition whichshowcases numerous Christian charities whichserve people at every level of society, accompa-nied by a lively programme of activities onMillennium Plain.

Our event is always an enjoyable time ofsharing with the many visitors to the Forum. We welcome the opportunity to proclaim ourLord Jesus through who we are and what webelieve as demonstrated in what we do.

We also have linked sister events in June atThe Walks park in King’s Lynn and at theRoyal Norfolk Show. They also aim to show-case and celebrate further work of the localChristian community.

A s the Global Director ofWorship Central, 32-year oldLuke Hellebronth gets to do

what he loves to do – write, play andlead worship music, and inspire oth-ers around the world to do the same.

In 2006, with his friend and mentor,Tim Hughes, one of Britain’s leadingsinger-songwriters of contemporaryChristian music, Luke was part ofthe team which founded WorshipCentral. With an online course, ayear-long academy, events andalbums, Worship Central resourcesworship teams in local churches tobuild their confidence, creativity, theology and skills.

Luke and his wife Anna collaboratewith Tim Hughes and three othertalented worship musicians, NickHerbert, Josh Gauton and Ben Can-telon, in the collective also known asWorship Central. They lead worshipall over the world and have releasedfive albums together.

Luke, who towers over his band-mates, wears on-trend glasses and acropped beard. He plays a key role inthe band, writing songs, singingvocals and playing the acousticguitar. In 2013 he released his ownworship album, ‘Stand Up’.

He is a graduate of Trinity Collegeof Music in London, where he stud-ied after leaving Norwich School in2003. During his two years of SixthForm at the Norwich Cathedral-basedschool, Luke met a teacher whowould have a big influence.

Luke said: “I had a music teachercalled David Fitzgerald who was aChristian – amazing man – and hesaid, ‘when you go down to London, you’ve got to go to this church, HTB’.He said: ‘You’ll really enjoy it, themusic’s great, get involved in theworship team there.’”

Norwich School’s David Fitzgeraldis a saxophonist and woodwindmusician, who in the early 90sfounded the Christian Celtic folkband Iona. Not only did Luke followhis advice and start attending HolyTrinity Brompton (HTB) in 2003, butthe track ‘Waves’ on Worship Cen-tral’s recent ‘Mercy Road’ album isreminiscent of the haunting quality ofIona’s beautiful vocals.

Holy Trinity Brompton is anAnglican church in central London, perhaps best known for birthing the

Alpha Course. “I played in the wor-ship team there as soon as I arrived,”Luke said, “and then began to leadworship in the student group. Thatwas really my bread and butter. I didthat week in, week out andloved it. From there I shad-owed different people and ledat bigger gatherings, servicesand events. It has grownfrom there really.”

Following graduation, Lukewas employed for six years onthe staff of HTB as a WorshipPastor, transitioning into therole at Worship Central.

He grew up in Eaton, wherehis family had moved whenhe was eight, attending Fair-way Middle School (nowEaton Primary). Luke’s par-ents, Dieter and Jane aremusicians and Christians buthe never felt pressurised inhis faith. “I think my parentsencouraged me to find myown faith really,” Luke said.

During his teenage years heattended King’s CommunityChurch in central Norwich, where he got baptised whenhe was 15. “I had a couple ofgreat youth leaders there whowere key in my faith journey,”he said.

Now in a position to influ-ence the faith of peoplearound the world, he is quickto count his blessings. Hesaid: “It is such a privilege tobe able to use the gifts that I

believe God has given me and whatI’ve trained in to serve Him and toserve a church, and also wider in thechurch’s mission to see people cometo Christ.

“I think music can be such anamazing way to draw people in andto paint a picture of who God is.That’s one of the things we love to do– paint pictures of this God whom we

worship. People have so many ques-tions, and through music andworship and the songs we write, wewant to describe our God.”

The headquarters of Worship Cen-tral is now in Birmingham. It is herethat Luke’s wife Anna Hellebronth isthe Worship Pastor of Gas StreetChurch, a church plant of Holy Trin-ity Brompton led by Tim Hughes whois also an Anglican vicar.

Worship Central has over 20 hubsworldwide including in Australia,Canada, Costa Rica, South Africa,Malaysia, Spain and Slovakia. It ispart of Luke’s role as the GlobalDirector to be a link to those hubs, stay in touch, give training opportu-nities and set the vision and strategyfor moving forward.

Luke said: “I love all the practicaltraining elements but really they areall tools to facilitate that encounterwith God. Obviously music and sungworship is one way of how that hap-pens. I’ve seen that time and timeagain, whether it’s through a healingor a revelation of who God is,through a lyric or an emotion that hasbeen struck through a melody – somany different ways.

“But I think seeing the change andtransformation in people meetingwith God is always so satisfying. Ithink that is the thing that is going tochange lives and hopefully theworld.”

The Worship Central course is afree 7-session online training coursefor local churches to run themselves. To find out more about this and otherresources go towww.worshipcentral.org.

Luke’s world of worshipIn 2000, aged 15, LukeHellebronth was baptisedat King’s CommunityChurch in Norwich. Nowhe leads an internationalChristian movement that isseeking to inspire Godlyworship and make itcentral to church andcommunity life acrossthe world. Jenny Sealreports.

Many of the peoplecrowding intochurch servicesaround the worldthis year will beopening hymn-books fromNorwich-basedHymns Ancientand Modern.

E ven if everyone isnot singing fromexactly the same

hymnbook, the chances arehigh that the song bookyou are handed comesfrom Hymns Ancient andModern.

The classic collection ofhymns was named morethan 150 years ago from achance meeting of twoclergymen on a train.

Hymns Ancient andModern is not just a hymnbook, it is a Christiancharity and it is based inNorwich.

Via book and newspaper publishing, book-selling and distribution, it generates funds inorder to fulfil its charitable purpose of makinggrants to churches and Christian organisations.

Today Hymns A&M publishes around 100books every year in print and digital formatsvia imprints SCM Press, Canterbury Press,Church House Publishing (under arrangementwith the Archbishops Council) and SaintAndrew Press (under arrangement with theChurch of Scotland).

It also publishes the Church Times and otherperiodicals, owns leading religious bookshopChurch House Bookshop, runs events and semi-nars plus distribution centre Norwich Booksand Music (NBM), based on an industrial centreon Norwich’s outer ring road. Three generations offamily in 50-yearchurch role tradition Story continued from front page

“As my grandparents had met in this place, been trained up and sent out into the world,so this place has been a time of transforma-tion, training and growth for me,” said Beth. “It is exciting because I look at where God

has taken my grandparents from their time atLST, how He has used them for His kingdompurposes, and then see myself and my fi-ancé continuing to build on their legacy withthe foundations that LST has equipped uswith. 50 years on and much has changed inthe world, but the Mission of God remainsunchanged.”
