Over the last few months, the Board of Directors of Jewish Family Service
Agency has been hard at work managing transition within the organization.
This coming year will mark many new beginnings for JFSA.
In September, we formed a search committee for the Executive Director,
comprised of Shelley Ail, Charlotte Bell, Rabbi Philip Bregman, Mitchell Gropper, Rabbi Jonathan Infeld, Elliott Lipsey, Frieda Miller, Leah Rubin, and myself as Chair.
Over the next few months we will
be working on preliminary tasks and
establishing a system for developing,
interviewing, and selecting
candidates, and we will be engaging
a search firm in the recruitment
process. We look forward to keeping
you and our many stakeholders
updated during this time.
With the lease for our current office
space coming to term in early 2015,
the Board is also focused on finding
new offices that will best meet
the current and growing needs of
staff and our clients. Factors we
are taking into account include
accessibility and location.
MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP
Despite these major priorities, we know
that the most important deliverable that our
organization has, is to help our many clients who
seek the support of our programs and services.
2
Despite these major priorities, we know that the most important deliverable that our organization has, is to help our many clients who seek the support of our programs and services. Last year alone, with your support,
and that of our many volunteers, funders and partners, we met the needs
of 1,500 individuals in the community. A special thank you to our committed
staff who work on the front lines daily. We are proud to know that the work of
our agency is far reaching and impactful; that the experiences that we help to
create are transformative.
We have many community partners who work with us annually to ensure that
we continue fulfilling our important mission. A special thank you to the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver, for not only being our largest funder, but
a tremendous resource to our agency in planning. In late spring, we were
approved for $840,000 each year for the next two years in allocations from
the Federation Allocations committee. This funding currently makes up 22%
of our annual operating budget and we are grateful to the many community
members and donors who give to their campaign. For more information on
which programs are supported by this funding, please see page 10 for
the full article.
We wish each and everyone of you all the best for the year ahead.
Thank you again for your friendship and support. Enjoy this edition of
Family Matters.
Sincerely,
Joel Steinberg
Board Chair

SENIORS
Most days, Ruth goes to her 89 year old
mother who still lives on her own, to help
take care of her. She brings home cooked
meals, runs errands, takes her to medical
appointments and most importantly, she
gives her companionship.
She is among 28% of Canadians age
15 and older who provide care to family
members or friends with long-term
health conditions, disability needs or
aging needs, according to a Statistics
Canada report released in Fall 2013.
39% of caregivers look after their own parents
Caregiving for Aging Parents
5
SENIORS
More than one quarter of caregivers — or 2.2 million
individuals — in Canada could be considered “sandwiched”
between caregiving and raising children.
Most were women between the ages of 35 and 44 and were
helping parents or parents-in-law while also having at least
one child under age 18 living at home.
8% help spouses
3 hours per week
is the amount of time adult children spend caring for parents, an ill or disabled family member. The amount of time varied depending on the relationship between caregiver and care receiver.
22% of seniors who receive caregiving support live in care facilities, including assisted living and long-term-care homes
9% help parents-in-law
6
A Special Program for Adult Children
The JFSA Seniors Department has
seen the increase in the number of
adult children, most often those in
their fifties, who need help in learning
about community resources for their
parents, understanding the levels of
care and criteria for access to assisted
living and congregate care. They are
working, have family obligations, yet
want to do as much as they can for
their parents or in-laws.
Often simply talking with our Director
or seniors counsellors is helpful. Many
learn over time how to better balance
caregiving for others and themselves.
Several have expressed an interest
in meeting together to talk about
resources, care options, and how they
have learned to navigate the health
system, and to have the opportunity
to talk about the difficulty of this role
and the changing mental and physical
condition of their once vital parents.
JFSA has responded by offering an evening monthly drop in group for adult children. We believe that getting
together to share issues, information
and mutual support will be helpful.
Our first session was on October 22.
Feedback from participants was
positive. There is no charge for this
group. All those with aging parents
are welcome.
The next session will be on November 26 at 7pm at JFSA. Sessions will be facilitated by
Dr. Judith Globerman.
No registration required, but if you plan
on attending, it would be helpful to call
Joanne Haramia, Director of Seniors at 604-257-5151 local 217.
Dr. Globerman brings a long history of research and practice in gerontology focusing primarily on the impact of caregiving on families. She recently retired after 12 years as the Executive Leader of Care Services at the Louis Brier Home and Hospital and the Weinberg Residence. Dr. Globerman is currently an Associate Professorship Emeritus at the University of British Columbia.
This program is generously funded by allocations through the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver and The May & Stanley Smith Charitable Trust.

COUNSELLING
Often, when an individual comes into
their physician’s office with depression
and/or anxiety they are prescribed
medication. Present medications used
to help patients may include Effexor,
Celexa and Ceprolex. In my opinion,
after 35 years of clinical practice, such
medications can be of great importance
and may even prevent self-harming
behaviours. I and my colleagues have
also recommended that clients speak
with their physician about mediations to
support them during therapy.
However, there has been research in the
2010 Journal of the Medical Association
that anti-depressant meds are not shown
to be more effective than placebos except
in those individuals with severe depression
symptoms. Harvard Medical School
corroborated similar results in 2014.
There are many studies that indicate that
psychotherapy is as, or is more effective
than anti-depressant medications.
As a therapist and a clinical director
for more than 30 years, I can state
that many clients will benefit from
counselling therapy – but why?
• Effective therapy can support
clients become more resilient
• Therapy can support a client to
raise their level of independence
and even their functioning
• If focuses on building support
systems - with family or friends
and relationships – and prevents
isolation
• Therapy helps clients move
through the complexities of the
emotional system and teaches
how they can soothe that reactive
system that sometimes becomes
a liability – especially in stressful
situations with others or their
environments
Alan Stamp, MSc. PCFTTADirector of Clinical Counselling
Is Medication thefor Depression
8
• Therapy is a hopeful process;
optimism is a necessary part of
the therapist’s belief that change
is possible
• Therapy is a collaboration between
the therapist and the client that can
yield change and healing
• Therapy can be short or long term;
change can occur in either, though
it is thought that long-term change
comes from a longer commitment to
the therapy process
COUNSELLING
There is unquestionably the need
for medication for some people
experiencing difficulties such as
depression and anxiety. Individuals
experiencing symptoms should
always seek medical attention
promptly and explore options for
medications, if indicated.
Psychotherapy can also play a
significant role by promoting
mental health and effecting
positive long-term changes.

Give More to JFSA Without Using Your Credit Card or Writing a Cheque
Are you looking for
a way to reduce your
tax bill for 2014 and
make a meaningful
donation to JFSA,
consider a gift of
securities.
Selling an appreciated stock or mutual fund
will require you to pay tax on 50 per cent
of the capital gain. However, donating the
appreciated securities to charity as a gift-in-
kind, will help you eliminate this requirement.
You will remove an unneeded asset from
your portfolio, JFSA will issue you a
charitable tax receipt for the fair market
value of the securities, and most importantly
you will feel satisfaction in seeing your
donation put to good use!

CLIENT OUTCOMES
Stories of SuccessTsvia moved to Vancouver earlier this year with her husband. Immigrants from Ukraine, they felt that they could have a better life here in Canada. Despite their optimism, adjusting to their new environment has not been without challenges due to the language barrier. Shortly after arriving in Vancouver, they were recommended to JFSA and over the next few months, found affordable housing and for him, employment.
One day, during a regular meeting with her Resettlement Counsellor, Tsvia experienced intense pain from a toothache. She told her counsellor that this had been bothering her for awhile but recently the pain had gotten worse and to the point that she was not able to eat properly. Unfortunately, Tsvia did not qualify for assistance or medical care so could not previously address this ailment.
Her counsellor quickly consulted with JFSA’s Seniors Department staff to find a dentist that could see Tsvia on short notice. Within days, she was able to schedule an appointment and her counselor came as a translator. It turned out that
Tsvia required extensive dental work, including a full root canal. Tsvia felt in despair; she knew that she and her husband could not afford to have this procedure done on their limited income.
Tsvia’s disappointment quickly turned to joy, though, due to the generosity of this particular dentist. She received her root canal that day as he chose to donate his services.
Today, Tsvia is healthier and pain-free. “The doctor was my angel and I am so lucky that he cared to help me – a stranger. It is never easy as a new immigrant, struggling to build a life in our new homeland.” Tsvia and her husband are so very grateful for this random act of kindness and feel blessed to be part of such a caring and supportive Jewish community.

Two years ago, Marla was devasted to learn that her adult daughter admitted she had a substance-abuse problem. From that moment on she knew that her life would be forever changed.
The family was concerned about her granddaughter, Bea, who was in elementary
school at the time. Her family life was chaotic and unpredictable. She felt
confused and insecure. Bea loved her mother and worried about her constantly.
Through friends, the family heard about the YOU Matter Program and Bea
started attending clinical counselling to help address her experiences. Weekly
sessions gave her the tools with which to understand and experience a safe
environment with safe adults and a safe place to regain her sense of trust and
predictability. Marla attended each counselling session with her granddaughter
for support. Through this therapy support process, soon she realized that her
life had also become unmanageable. She herself, needed to come to terms with
her daughter’s addiction and to make sense of the challenges they were facing
as a family unit. She decided to start her own weekly therapy sessions.
After two years of therapy, Marla now feels she is in a place of peace and
understanding. “The compassion, understanding, and commitment I have been
fortunate enough to receive from my therapist has transformed my life from one
of darkness to one of hope and trust.” Her daughter is now also a part of the
program, and her transformation has also begun. Marla is truly grateful for the
YOU Matter Program that continues to help her family.
“ The compassion, understanding, and commitment I have been fortunate enough to receive from my therapist has transformed my life from one of darkness to one of hope and trust.”

Hannukah ... a time for Tikkun olam, repairing the world
If you would like to help someone in need,
please contact the Development Office at
604.257.5151 or [email protected].
Hannukah celebrates the miracle of
light and carries with it the messages
of renewal, hope, and the dispelling
of darkness. It can be a time for us to
rededicate ourselves to the Jewish value
of tikkun olam, repairing the world.
For low-income families this can be a
challenge because of the struggle to
acquire basic necessities and meet the
demands of a changing economy. After
obtaining adequate food and housing,
there may not be much left over for
“extras” such as warm clothing, medical
expenses, and toiletries, let alone
Hanukkah gifts, special food items, toys,
and even candles. The spirit of Hanukkah
promotes the shining of light into
the dark corners of our world and
reminds us that that these families
are not alone, they are remembered
by the Jewish community especially
at this joyous time of year.
JFSA is grateful for the support
from many community partners
and donors who help each year to
ensure that Hannukah is special for
low-income individuals and families.
Last year, local organizations
and community members came
together to collect more than
forty bags of nutritious canned
food, gift certificates for families
with children, winter clothing for
all ages, wrapped Hanukkah gifts
for kids, handmade cards, and
apple sauce and oil to help make
the holidays bright for our clients.
This year, the community is already
coming together again to renew
their annual commitment.
Todah Rabah!

JFSA’s Friends for Life Giving Circle: Hineni – “Here I Am”
Ten years ago, JFSA introduced a new giving
circle to the organization called Friends for
Life. This circle recognizes the most committed
supporters to the agency, who have given a
lifetime accumulated giving of $100,000 or more.
These individuals and families embody the spirit
of Hineni – a phrase that means “here I am” in
Hebrew. More than a simple word, it expresses a complete commitment to do something challenging, important and on behalf of the Jewish community and those in need.
Over the last two years, the circle has grown
significantly with new members. JFSA is proud
to welcome Gary Averbach, Lorne Greenberg
and Sari Zack, The Lutsky Families, Dr. Neil and
Michelle Pollock, Charles Shnier, and The Ben
and Esther Charitable Foundation. In addition to
their extraordinary philanthropic commitment,
many are also past and current volunteers and
have served as Board members.
“JFSA has always been a top priority for our family.
We know that our annual support means that
the agency can provide our community with a
vital social service safety net. The agency helps
people address challenges that they face –often
those which are unexpected. It’s about helping people restore dignity, and providing hope and meaning in times where a person’s struggle may feel like its insurmountable. It is a blessing for us
to have the opportunity to help others and be part
of building a vibrant Jewish community” says
Dr. Neil Pollock who became a member this year.
Todah Rabah to our many friends for their
longstanding friendship
and commitment to the
agency and for ensuring
that we fulfill our
important mission.
