How’d you like our judges?

Ulrich Schmitz received his equestrian training in Germany, where he successfully competed in dressage, show jumping, three day eventing and was awarded the German Riding Medal. Uli continued his career as a competitor after moving to Canada. He earned distinction as a dressage judge under the Canadian Dressage Federation. Uli added event course designer, dressage clinician to his equestrian skills in Florida and Arizona. He has shown through the Grand Prix level. Uli is an International FEI “I” Event Judge. He is also an USEF “S” Dressage Judge as well as an USEF Sport Horse Judge. Uli has his USDF Bronze, Silver and Gold Rider Medals.

Jayne Ayers has been an FEI 4* dressage judge for over 25 years, and has been judging dressage for the USEFfor over 35 years. She also holds an R license to judge Dressage Sport Horse Breeding classes. She enjoyed her work as a licensed Eventing judge for about 15 years, but chose to focus exclusively on dressage when she received her FEI license. As a long-time member of the USEF Dressage Committee, she has served on sub-committees for Judge Training, Clinics, Juniors, Young Horses, Rules, Test Writing, and Sport Horse Breeding. She is currently Co-Chairman of the Dressage Committee.

I am thrilled to be the Jr./YR recipient of a scholarship from the Nebraska Dressage Association! Thanks to this generous grant, I will get to attend some amazing dressage events such as the USDF Region 4 Adult Clinic and a Shan Lawton clinic. My horse, Striking Silhouette, and I have grown so much since we first met almost three years ago, but our partnership is just starting to flourish. I am beyond excited to have these opportunities to strengthen our connection and develop our skills as we continue to learn the sport of dressage!

I would like to thank NDA and the board for awarding me the Adult Amateur scholarship for 2015. I am very excited and am appreciative of the opportunity to do some additional training with Sarah Martin. To be able to enmesh myself in a week-long clinic is exciting beyond words.


The USDF Region 4 Adult Clinic was held on May 16-17 at Providence Farm in Palmyra, Nebraska, generously hosted by the Kment and Smith families. Eight talented horse and rider combinations worked with Kathy Connelly and Betsy Steiner on “Creating a Winning Partnership With Your Horse,” the name of the clinic series.

Kathy and Betsy would take turns teaching the riders throughout the weekend, then giving input to auditors and sharing their feedback on the ride.

One of the very first questions Kathy asked the audience was very simple, “Why do you like to ride?” After some thought, auditors generally concluded that they rode for the sake of the spiritual connection that we get from the horse, or as NDA member Heidi Helmer said, “You get to fly, I ride because I love it!”

As Kathy went on to describe while Betsy was finishing with another rider, it is important for us as riders to “be where the horse is” and to “be their leaders, not their masters.” Betsy went on to say, “Whatever you give to them, you get back. It’s discipline, structure and praise that create a good partnership. Horses give so much power and energy, we really must appreciate what the horses bring for us.”

The cohesion and fun joking between the two instructors made for a delightful weekend. Both Kathy and Betsy complimented each other well.

Each instructor had a fun tool up their sleeves. Betsy pulled out two small plush balls and encouraged rider, Natalie Truman to stick them under her arms, while she rode her gelding, Roanie. Kathy used a brightly colored hair clip fastened into each horses’ manes as a reminder to the rider; every time the rider saw the clip, they must remember to make a specific correction. While riding alone, make progress with your horse by changing what you work on each week.

Betsy emphasized the importance of cross training our bodies as athletes to create the best support for our horses. Because riding uses very specific muscles, cross training supports other muscles that will support our riding muscles and give us an awareness of our body as a whole.

After watching eight incredibly talented riders and chatting with auditors who traveled as far as Texas and Minnesota, I left with a rejuvenated sense of appreciation for not only dressage as a sport, but also for the horse, who gives us so much in return.

Thank you so much for the riders and their horses, for the fantastic demonstrations. Thank you, NDA Juniors, for providing a fantastic breakfast each morning. Thank you to all the volunteers and Providence Farm for making this run so smoothly and finally, for all who came out to watch and participate, we hope you loved it as much as we did!

She was then a working ranch horse as a 5 year old and then became a broodmare for five years producing four foals. In 2013 she was put in training with Rae Lynn Gilmore who showed her in reining and trained her for ranch horse versatility. Misty was judged the Supreme Champion Horse at the 2014 Nebraska Cattlemen's Classic after competing in conformation, ranch trail, boxing, open roping, and ranch rodeo. Misty has most recently received natural horsemanship based, partnership and western dressage training with Emily Johnson of Mountain Rose Horsemanship. Misty was shown successfully at the 2014 Western Dressage World Show placing 4th and 5th in her respective Introductory Level classes with Emily Johnson riding. In November 2014 Misty won her division of the Trail Rider Challenge at the Nebraska Horse Expo with the owner riding, further proving her terrific versatility. Misty has eye-catching movement and a free-flowing stride which makes her equally suited for english disciplines. She has also shown with success in english dressage at Training Level. Whether on the trail, in the western arena or on the english dressage court, Misty excels!

Medical History: Misty has been on a regular de-worming, farrier and vaccination program throughout her life and is current in all categories.

Eros VF (Aslan)Eros VF, fondly known as Aslan, is a 6 year old (March 2009) 16.1h registered Friesian Sport Horse gelding (rider/handler in photos/video is 6 foot tall for reference). Both parents are Friesian so his papers do state 100%. Beautiful free and forward movement, soft mouth and responds easily to leg and seat aids. Super dressage prospect or all-around riding, trail or driving horse. Wonderfully sweet and respectful personality on the ground and longe line, Aslan is easy to catch, load, trim and handle. He is also curious and fun to ride and enjoys shows, demos and rides on the trail.

As a young horse, Aslan had plenty of handling and was ponied (at a leisurely pace) down the trail. He was first ridden in April 2014 by a friend of mine using natural horsemanship techniques. I saw him after 30 days and purchased him as a dressage prospect, continuing his training. I took Aslan to his first dressage show in June 2014 where he enjoyed nickering to himself in the indoor mirrors and showing off in the outdoor arena with his first score a 68% at Intro Level despite all the new things to look at…he enjoyed “looking”, but continued “working” and was a wonderful obedient boy.

Aslan is a big mover with lovely gaits and a presence that catches everyone’s eye. He is always happy to go to work and eager to please. Can’t say enough good things about this guy! Quiet enough for competent young or amateur rider looking for a fun, rewarding prospect. Available for $17,500 but willing to negotiate with perfect home! Located in Seward, NE area.
