W Welcome to Salisbury! We invite you to stay awhile and enjoy our Delmarva hospitality. There is a great deal more here than meets the eye and this book is designed to share just a small portion of it with you. Wicomico County is not only a great place to visit, but a very hospitable place to raise a family. We have great schools, private schools and a variety of higher learning. If you’re from the Metro area, you will find a more relaxed pace here and although we seem to grow more with every passing year, we have never lost our charm that draws so many. We have some absolutely great food on the Eastern Shore and it’s not just all seafood. Our local restauranteurs offer a variety of delectable dishes to choose from. We should call your attention to those included in this book. In every case, you will not only find amazing food, but premier service too. If you’re looking to get out and about, Salisbury offers historic venues and museums. For the kids, or the kid in you, there is an amazing two story laser tag in town, a bowling alley and even a skating rink. If you’re here on an extended stay with the family, check out our local sports camps and short term events for children. For a day trip, Assateague is near-by, with the world famous ponies, or maybe you would enjoy stepping back in time on Tangier Island, just south of town. Tee off at a local award winning golf course or enjoy the afternoon at a local spa. However you fill your time, we hope you find our town warm and inviting and visit again soon. From the staff of Inside, welcome.

On the Cover - Salisbury Zoo Looking for a little quality time with nature? The Zoo is not just a kid thing, but it is a great place to take them. The Salisbury Zoo is one of the only remaining “free” zoos in the country, and definitely worth your time to visit. It’s a zoo with a history of steady growth and one that happened, just by chance. In 1909 a nearby dam broke, draining the area that would one day become the Salisbury Zoological Park. In ’26, the City purchased that flooded marsh for $5000 and the next year, Mayor Thomas L. Parker appointed the first Salisbury Park Commission. By 1950, Salisbury residents began releasing unwanted wild pets in this area and an abandoned white-tailed deer was bottle fed by one of the City employees that cared for the park. As the City employees began caring for more and more animals, it only seemed logical that the birth of a zoo was imminent. In 1954, Milton Ardis became Salisbury’s first zookeeper. Local merchants and visitors began donating money and food and the zoo truly began to take shape. Over the next ten years, other animals would be added to the collection, including bison and llamas. In 1970, Benjamin Blackson was hired as the first professional Zoo Director and in ’72 the Salisbury Zoo became a member of the American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums. Tours began for visiting school children and in 1974 the zoo was awarded the “number one” rating by the Humane Society of the United States. Again, over the next ten year segment more animals would be added to the collection. Buildings were also added such as the Ocelot gift shop, public restroom facilities and recently a Bistro which is perfect for lunches and snacks. There is an onsite health clinic for the animals and only recently did the zoo experience the loose of a female Andean bear, that had lived almost 38 years- she was the oldest know Andean bear in the world! Quite a claim to fame for a little zoo. The zoo is a great place to visit while you’re here and plan to return for some of their annual events, like Zoobilation and Night of the Living Zoo. It’s a great way to get up close and personal with the animals.

Did you know that Kuhn’s Jewelers is the sixth longest, continuously run establishment of its kind in the nation? Yes, the nation. Today, 156 years since its beginning, Kuhn’s Jewelers is a thriving business which has maintained its impeccable reputation to this day. Kuhn’s was founded in 1853 by A.W.W. Woodcock, who ran the business for over 5 decades, until he retired in 1906. In 1923 John A Kuhn, purchased the store and the name was changed to Kuhn’s Jewelers. On the stores 100th anniversary; in 1953, Kuhn’s son-in-law, Jack Purnell took over proprietorship of the store. In 1995, Purnell’s daughter, Susan, joined as the co-owner of the store. This would now be the third generation of the Kuhn family to be involved in the store’s operation and management. Not only is Kuhn’s known for the longevity of business, but also for their superior customer service. They always go the extra mile, whether you want a special anniversary gift or something as simple as a replacement watch battery. I know that as a long-time customer, I always feel that I have been well cared for when I leave. In 2000, Kuhn’s received the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce “Small Business Award”; a very prestigious award that is based on integrity, growth, and contribution to the community. The next year, at a statewide competition, sponsored by the Maryland Chamber of Com-merce, Kuhn’s won the “At Your Service Award”, also based on their long history of fine customer service. You don’t often find this level of service today. You’re really just another customer at a mass merchandise jeweler. When you walk by the jewelry stores in the mall these days, you see nothing but neon signs that tell you that certain displays have recently been marked down. Most jewelry stores have gone to policy of overpricing their merchandise. When they mark down their goods, customers think that they are getting a great deal. Actually you are paying the same price that you would see in Kuhn’s every day. However at Kuhn’s the pricing is coupled with the exceptional service. There are really no deals when you are purchasing jewelry; you get what you pay for. Kuhn’s offers something for everyone and everyone’s budget. You can find very affordable gifts including charms for $15, pictures frames around $35 and more. If you’re shopping for that special diamond, a Kuhn’s diamond is probably the best value on the shore. They have such a long standing relationship with the vendors. It’s just one of the many advantages of being in the business for such a long period of time. Heirloom and family tradition; not only from the business perspective of the Kuhn family, but as a true Delmarva family. Many families on the shore, through generations, have trusted Kuhn’s. Doing business there is like having a family jeweler. You never have to question quality or fair price. In today’s economy it’s wonderful to shop with confidence at a business you know will be there tomorrow!

Set apart from the “here today, gone tomorrow” discount businesses by an impeccable reputation, Kuhn’s is a guild jewelry store, offering a higher quality of jewelry.

The Delmarva Shorebirds are the Class "A" Minor League Baseball affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. Located in Salisbury, MD, the team calls Arthur W. Perdue Stadium its home. The team first opened its gates in April of 1996, beginning as a Montreal Expos affiliate, a relationship that lasted just a single season as a deal was struck to make the Shorebirds an affiliate of the Orioles Organization in 1997. A member of the South Atlantic League, the team plays 140 games each season, 70 at home and 70 on the road, all of which are broadcast on Sports Talk AM 960. The organization is owned and operated by 7th Inning Stretch LP, which also owns the Stockton Ports and Everett Aquasox, both of which are located on the West Coast. Since 1996 The Shorebirds have been crowned champions twice, the first coming in 1997 and the latest in the year 2000. Some memorable Shorebirds who have gone on to play in the big leagues are players like Erik Bedard, Brian Roberts, Nick Markakis, John Maine, Orlando Cabrera and Javier Vasquez among others.

In 1962, Assateague Island National Seashore was established to protect Assateague Island in both Maryland and Virginia. The Island is home to over 320 species of birds and the world famous Assateague Ponies. There are numerous trails and pristine beaches to explore. And a visit there is just a memorable way to spend the day. The famous Assateague wild ponies have roamed the beaches, forest, and salt marsh of Assateague Island since the 1600's. According to the Assateague Island National Seashore, over 300 wild ponies live on the Island in both Maryland and Virginia. There are two theories regarding how the ponies found their way to the Island. Some believe it was the result of the wreck of a Spanish galleon transporting horses. Others believe the horses were brought by early settlers that allowed them to graze the Island. In recent years a Spanish ship wreck has been discovered, offering credit to the first theory. There are approximately 160 horses on the Maryland side of the Island. The herd is separated from the Virginia animals by a fence at the state line. The National Park Service and Fish & Wildlife Service have conducted resource management studies to ensure the wild horse population is maintained at a level the seashore environment of Assateague can tolerate. The ponies on the Virginia side are maintained by the Chincoteague Fire Department and a small group of the young are sold at the now world famous Chincoteague Pony Swim held each year in July. —www.assateagueisland.com.

W Welcome to our town! No matter the reason your here, dining on Delmarva should be an experience. Now that your tucked in your room, where do you want to eat? Salisbury offers a broad selection of locally-owned restaurants that have been serving our community for generations. The owners are on premise, some even in the kitchen, and their number one priority is that you have an exceptional dining experience. Serving everything from Eastern Shore traditions, to those famous Maryland Blue Crabs, you will be sure to find something delectable. Many local chefs offer a twist on your favorites, reflecting our Eastern Shore style. We even have our own local brews and wines to compliment your meal, but you won’t find those at the big box. Browse the following pages, we have lots of great suggestions for you. Did you know that dining and shopping local helps a community thrive? A study compiled in Andersonville, Illinois, a neighborhood community just North of Chicago, and similar in scope to towns here on the shore, showed that for every $100.00 spent at a locally-owned business, $68 dollars remained in that local economy, whereas only $43 would remain if that same $100.00 was spent at a chain business. The Liveable City Study, a civil economics review, conducted in Austin, Texas, demonstrated that the local merchants generated three times as much local economic activity as a chain store. The study compared the impact of a Borders Book & Music stores to a local business offering the same goods and services. It also indicated a preference of locals to frequent local stores by over 70%. Studies across the county continue to support the importance of dining/shopping local. Salisbury has a wealth of local restaurants and merchants offering a wide variety of services to enhance your stay. Please visit them for a true Delmarvalous experience.Hunan Palace

P Proper tipping shows others that you’re “socially groomed.” You’re not a cheap skate nor a show off. It is, however, better to tip generously than badly, but there are critical limits on both ends of the spectrum. Proper tipping also ensures good service, particularly from a bartender. If there is a party of four or more, tip the bartender $10 on your first round. He/she will remember your generosity and pay particular attention to the group. There after, tip the standard for each round; $1 for a beer, $2 for a mixed drink. The amount of gratuity depends on the service being provided and is usually a percentage of the total bill. If a service is already expensive, and you cannot afford to tip the proper percentage, then you cannot afford the service. The acceptable tip for food servers, cocktail servers, and bartenders is 15% to 20% of the total bill. The American wait staff is paid an average hourly wage

Barista - $1 Bartender - $1 for a beer,

$2 for mixed drinks Cabbie - 15% of the total fare Caddy- 50% of the caddy fee

Golf Cart Attendant - $2 Maid Service - $1-$10 per day

depending on the mess you made

Pet Sitter - 15% Pizza Delivery Person - 5% Spa Services - 15% to 20%

of $2.13 by their employer. If about $85.00, for a week’s worth of carting food and beverage back and forth from grumpy kitchen cooks to whiny customers sounds low to you, that’s because it is. The National Restaurant Association explains this issue, by citing the federal minimum wage law, which allows employers to pay employees who receive tips, a lesser wage. Employees, who are tipped, count on gratuities to make up for this huge difference. You may feel that paying your waiter’s salary should not be your responsibility, but the truth is, and it’s no secret, if you are eating out, you will be expected to tip and appropriately. If you are hesitant to tip because you received poor service, do not skip out on gratuity; instead ask to speak to the manager. Most will be very apprecia-tive of less than quality service, and sometimes all the wait staff needs is a little direction to improve their level of service.

Poplar Hill Mansion was built as the manor house of a farm outside the small 18th century town of Salisbury, which had slowly expanded since 1732 from a port landing site at the head of the Wicomico River, more than a half mile away. Construction was begun by Major Levin Handy, originally from Newport, Rhode Island. In 1795 the Major took out a deed for 357 acres of the original 700 acre land patent called "Pembertons Good Will." The house Handy began in 1795-96 was an ambitious Federal-style structure, outdistancing most buildings in the area in size and fine detail. Unfortunately, because of severe medical conditions, the Major’s architectural ambitions exceeded his ability to finance them. In 1803 the property was ordered to be put up for sale for payment of debts. The house was still incomplete. In 1805 the title was passed to a prominent physician in Salisbury, Dr. John Huston. When the Doctor died in 1828 there were fruit trees, vegetable crops, sheep, cattle, and eighteen slaves on the property, as well as $110 “cash on hand.” Huston’s widow Sarah inherited the property. In the late 1840s to early 1850s, she partially subdivided it, overseeing the laying out of Poplar Hill Avenue and Isabella Street. The subdivision of “Poplar Farm” continued at a moderate rate before the Civil War. From the 1870s until World War One, the extended area experienced a building boom, creating Salisbury’s first suburb, or “Newtown.” Mrs. Huston left Poplar Hill to her daughter Elizabeth, who initiated its sale to George Waller in 1881. (Elizabeth and her sister Isabella are commemorated in the names of neighborhood streets.) George Waller and his family lived in the house from 1882 to 1945. Various early photos and memorabilia belonging to the Wallers are located in the Mansion’s archives. Fred A. Adkins, who purchased the property in 1945, undertook restoration work with the hope of turning the house into the local Masonic Lodge. In 1948, when this failed to materialize, the house passed to Mr. and Mrs. Ward A. Garber, who maintained an 18th century period antique shop downstairs and lived upstairs. Mrs. Garber sold the property to Wicomico County in 1970 and since 1974 the City of Salisbury has owned it as a house museum in the public trust.

The doctors of Your Doc’s In are so much more than guys in white coats, or maybe it’s just the way they wear their white. Perhaps a white cape would be more fitting for this group of M.D.’s, yet they are not about recognition. They are about commitment to the community as a whole. They are very active in the area, offering care for a wide variety of groups from a local youth boxing club to the area’s minor league baseball team. These doctors, with growing families of their own, manage to do it all and run three busy area practices. Your Doc's In was founded in 2005 by emergency medicine specialist doctors Walt Gianelle, and Gerri Goertzen. They saw a need in the area for people and travelers who had an unexpected health problem. Not every unexpected problem should go to the emergency department. Very few problems need that level of care, and having an alternative allows everyone better care. Your Doc's In also offers the ability to have labs, ECG, x-ray and treatments such as intravenous medications, splinting, and stitching right on site, right away. This saves the patient from having to make separate trips and separate appointments to have these test completed. Multiple locations and extended hours are also designed to meet your needs. While some Urgent Cares move you along like a number, you will always find personal, individualized treatment at their local walk-in facility. Caring about you and the community, since 2005.
