    Its been seven years since the irstSalisbury Sand & Sea Festival becamethe local tradition or ringing in the

    arrival o summer, and this years eventhas just as much to oer as ever.Taking place at Salisbury Beach

    Center onSaturday and Sunday, June29 and 30, the estival oers all itsavorite events like the Pizza EatingContest, the Pet Parade, freworks andree entertainment and concerts at theoutdoor stage as well as some newattractions, like the watching the work

    in progress o 3D Chalk Artist AnthonyCappetto.

    At the center, Cappetto will spendthree days creating a 3D chalk paintingwhile his audience watches. The fnishedartwork will be on display throughoutthe weekend.

    Keeping the ocus on art, during theweekend there will be a Street Art

    Competition that begins at 8 a.m. Satur-day, with contestant artists assigned seg-ments o sidewalk to work their magic.

    Prizes will be awarded in the aternoonprior to the Entrain ree concert on stageat Salisbury Beach Center, which will beollowed by reworks.

    And Boston artist Percy Fortini Wrightwill produce a large easel painting on-site at the center, which will be auc-tioned o at the end o Saturday.

    Music also reigns supreme at the esti-val, with groups like Jeannie Mack pro-

    viding childrens tunes, Chuck WalterJazz Group and Rick Goldin and LeahVlahakis.

    Salisbury Beach State Reservationis one o the states most popular sea-side parks. Located on the sandy bar-rier beach where the Merrimack Rivermeets the Atlantic Ocean, the 521-acrepark oers swimming, ishing, camp-

    ing, access to a sae and easy-to-use boatramp, picnic areas and a covered water-ront pavilion that can accommodate 100people.

    The park is ideally suited or beach-goers. Large, paved parking lots andboardwalks give visitors easy accessto the beach. Each parking area has acomort station with bathrooms, chang-ing areas and outdoor showers. Ocean

    water temperatures generally warm upto comortable levels by mid-June orearly July and can stay relatively warminto the all. Lieguards are on duty dur-ing summer months.

    The state-owned beach extends or3.8 miles, rom the Seabrook town lineon the open ocean to the sands along

    the north bank o the Merrimack River.Beachgoers can walk the entire lengthi they like. Along the way, they can ndtidal pools at low tide, seashells and eventhe remains o a shipwreck near Salis-bury Beach Center.

    Fishing is a major attraction at thebeach. Striped bass can be caught romthe shore in season generally May andJune, then late August through October.Bluefsh can also be caught when theychase baitsh near the shore during thesummer months.

    The reservation includes 484 camp-ground sites, all near the MerrimackRiver and within easy walking dis-

    tance o the beach. There are 324electrical hookups, and all sites havewater hookups, picnic tables andireplaces. A dumping station is alsoavailable.

    The park is open all year. In all andwinter, harbor seals oten sun them-selves on rocks oshore.

    SALISBURY Early in September in1638, a group o 12 men received permis-sion to begin a plantation on the north-

    ern bank o the MerrimackRiver, near the spot whereit spills out into the AtlanticOcean. Only two years later,that community, frst knownas Colchester, would be incor-porated as Salisbury.

    Large in size, initially thetowns borders encompassedwhat are now the communi-

    ties o Salisbury, Amesburyand Merrimac, as well as theNew Hampshire towns oSeabrook, South Hampton,N e w t o n , H a m p s t e a d ,Plaistow and Kingston, until Salisburysnew town line was drawn up in the late1800s.

    With good land or arming, valu-able salt marsh or ishing, hunting

    and haying, as well as the beauty andcommerce o its ocean and river accessand location on the early travel routes

    between Boston and Ports-mouth, Salisbury was posi-tioned to prosper. And it did,through a number o incarna-tions over the centuries.

    Salisbury will celebrate its375th anniversary on Satur-day, Sept. 21, on SalisburyGreen, where the settlementwas originally centered.

    The date corresponds withEssex National HeritageCommissions Sails & Trailsweekends, and it will eaturemany historical aspects o

    Salisbury, such as tours o the SalisburyHistorical Societys Parsons HouseMuseum, right across the street romSalisbury Green, and a slide show onthe history o Salisbury Beach.

    Did you know that Salisbury has themost extensive network o biking/pedes-trian rail trails in the region?

    Salisburys recreational, walking andbiking and rail trails provide 3.4 miles otrails in the regions Coastal Rail Trailnetwork, nestled along the ormer rail-road beds that crisscross the town.

    There are two main rail trails:

    Old eaStern marSh trail

    This 1.4-mile paved trail runs romthe Merrimack River to Mudnock Road

    through Salisburys Great Marsh. It ol-lows the bed o a Boston and Maine rail-way that was abandoned years ago.

    The trail eatures scenic views othe salt marshes and the Town Creek,which meanders along the edge osections o the trail. It is a straightand lat path, perect or bikers o all

    ages, walkers and strollers. Near theMerrimack River, there is a connec-tor that takes you saely across the

    Merrimack River to the Clipper CityRail Trail in Newburyport.

    Parking is available o FriedenelsStreetnear the Merrimack River andalong Mudnock Road.

    SaliSbury POint GhOSt trail

    Named ater the white, muslin-covered locally made coach and carbodies, the ghost trains now give

    their name to the 2-mile trail runningbehind Lions Ball Field o Route 1,behind the Salisbury Fire Station. Thetrail leads to the Amesbury line. It isa straight and lat trail, built on a dirtbed.
