SALISBURY Early in September in1638, a group o 12 men received permis-sion to begin a plantation on the north-
ern bank o the MerrimackRiver, near the spot whereit spills out into the AtlanticOcean. Only two years later, that community, frst knownas Colchester, would be incor-porated as Salisbury.
Large in size, initially thetowns borders encompassedwhat are now the communi-
ties o Salisbury, Amesburyand Merrimac, as well as theNew Hampshire towns oSeabrook, South Hampton,N e w t o n , H a m p s t e a d ,Plaistow and Kingston, until Salisburysnew town line was drawn up in the late1800s.
With good land or arming, valu-able salt marsh or ishing, hunting
and haying, as well as the beauty andcommerce o its ocean and river accessand location on the early travel routes
between Boston and Ports-mouth, Salisbury was posi-tioned to prosper. And it did, through a number o incarna-tions over the centuries.
Salisbury will celebrate its375th anniversary on Satur-day, Sept. 21, on SalisburyGreen, where the settlementwas originally centered.
The date corresponds withEssex National HeritageCommissions Sails & Trailsweekends, and it will eaturemany historical aspects o
Salisbury, such as tours o the SalisburyHistorical Societys Parsons HouseMuseum, right across the street romSalisbury Green, and a slide show onthe history o Salisbury Beach.
