Letter from the EditorAs this is our first edition of the newly launched newsletter it’s fitting to give a brief introduction and overview of what we hope to achieve with it.

Our hope is that it will serve as a means of bringing us all closer as a company, and as colleagues, helping us learn more about, and from, each other.

We’re striving to deliver an informative, insightful and entertaining glimpse into the organisation and the people behind the name.

It’s also our plan to deliver a newsletter that goes beyond work-related topics and incorporates a broader view. This could eventually include general industry developments, cultural, social, and perhaps even sport (including eSports) content.

We are also going to be using the space to keep everyone up to date about developments at 5DT – from news on projects, birthdays, new (or departing) employees, to personal achievements and graduations.

Read on, and enjoy!

13What’s Happpening at 5DT

Message from the CEO5DT has grown significantly over the last few years. We have successfully completed several projects. However, the mining industry, one of our biggest sources of revenue, is in crisis. For 5DT to continue growing, we will have to diversify. At this point we will have to work harder than ever. We will also have to be more focused than ever.

We have successfully completed the decade-long Aircrew Training System (ATS) project for the South African Air Force. In the process, we transformed 5DT into a world-class aerospace and defence simulation company. This was done through hard work, dedication, sacrifice and our innovative 5DT way of doing things. While I am immensely proud of what we have achieved with this project, we cannot rest on our laurels – especially not now. We need to actively market this new capability and expand our Aerospace & Defence portfolio. You can read more on the ATS project on page 4.

The mining industry is currently under siege worldwide. The low prices of commodities, together with a weak economic outlook and labour unrest has forced most mining operations to cut costs. Training budgets, which includes training simulators, were some of the first to be reduced. I believe that there is still a good market for mining training simulators. We will however need to improve the quality of our products and provide better support. We will also need to be more creative in how we do business with the mining industry. For example, instead of only selling training simulators to them, we must explore the rental and lease of training simulators. We must also further develop the provision of services to the mining industry, for example long-term maintenance agreements for our simulators.

While the mining industry is down, we are pursuing new opportunities in the construction, transport and defence sectors.

We are currently hard at work with the development of a road truck training simulator. We need to put renewed focus into this project and get it to market as soon as possible.

We have also recently completed the first phase of a project to supply construction training simulators to the South African Army. We partnered with the industry giant Barloworld Equipment for this project. This project is reviewed on page 2.

Our mentorship programme was launched in October. This programme will have an important and lasting impact on both mentees and mentors, as I believe that we can all learn from each other. This programme is one of the first steps towards establishing a strong and lifelong learning culture at 5DT.

On the international front, we are restructuring all operations outside of South Africa. Our goal is to make every 5DT office profitable in the next year.

We now have the opportunity and also the necessity to develop new products, new services and new technology. Any spare time should be directed at these activities as well as to improve and formalize our quality.

We are moving in the right direction, but we need to gain momentum! I would like to ask all 5DT team members to put renewed and focused effort into their respective roles. Working hard now will ensure a bright future for all of us at 5DT!

RegardsPaul OlckersCEO

The Army is in the process of replenishing their earthmoving equipment fleet and Barloworld Equipment, in conjunction with 5DT, won the tender to supply the first round of equipment.

The Army has both construction and engineering formations which use militarized versions of the standard Caterpillar construction equipment to perform tasks such as preparing army bases, digging trenches and recovering combat vehicles.

As the sole arms procurement agency for the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), Armscor is responsible for this, and selected Barloworld Equipment as the supplier for the Army’s earthmoving equipment replacement programme. This forms part of Armscor’s Militarised Operation Earthmoving System (MOEMS) project.

Barloworld Equipment chose 5DT to provide construction simulators for the project. These machines include dozers, a front loader, a grader, an excavator, and a backhoe loader.

The Army has further tenders out for additional machines and 5DT has bids in with various equipment manufacturers, so we hope to leverage our success in this project to get further orders from the Army.

This project is also the first project in 5DT to go completely through our new quality programme, driven by our Quality Manager, Frikkie Klopper. We are very pleased with the outcome of this programme as what we have delivered is very polished and instills a high level of confidence. Thanks to Frikkie for all his hard work in getting the team up to this new level.

The wide range of machines required naturally means that we have a large number of staff members involved in the project, from many different machine classes.

The project also gave us the opportunity to overhaul the maintenance manual for our containers. To this end management, the art department, publishing team, and the hardware team came together to produce a new maintenance manual that is focused on simple, to-the-point instructions that will help our clients keep their simulators running efficiently.

We’ve finished delivery on this project and both Barloworld Equipment and the Army are very happy with the project.

Our product description matched the required specifications for the project. The project value is double that of MOEMS and who knows – we may even become the de facto simulator provider to the army!

Breaking New Ground

MOEMS

“5DT is now a strong contender for MOEMS 2, as 12 out of the 12

equipment vendors that we could identify as putting in a bid, chose to

partner with 5DT.”

2 3

Steve Marshall, Marketing & Sales Manager for 5DT, recalls the process as follows:

A notable 5DT competitor gained an early lead in supplying simulators to the army. Three decades later they still claim to be the ‘de facto simulator provider’ to the army. Friends in Armscor and the army helped maintain the status quo.

In October 2012, 5DT received a call from a tender consultant:“Do you know about the Armscor tender?”“What tender?”“The one for construction simulators – can you introduce us to an OEM? We would like to help in the preparation of tender responses.”“Sure – we know some guys at Barloworld (the local CAT dealer).”

That’s how it started. Barloworld was not aware of the tender either, but agreed to partner with 5DT and submit a proposal. None of the other OEMs were willing to talk to us because 5DT was not the ‘de facto’ simulator provider and the simulator specifications were not based on our system.

It later became clear that Barloworld’s bid was the front-runner. As a result of the very competitive bid, 5DT and Barloworld secured the MOEMS contract by November 2014.

This created a bit of a stir within the army and Armscor (we are the only current project which is on-time and in-budget).

Page 4: Inside the 5th Dimension - 2015 Q4 - Issue 1

Aircrew Training System 5DT recently successfully completed the Aircrew Training System (ATS) project. The ATS was developed for the South African Air Force (SAAF) to fulfill the following training requirements:

• Training of student navigators and instructor navigators

• Procedural training for aircrew• Procedural training for maritime aircrew in

conjunction with the South African Navy• Procedural conversion and continuation

training for squadron aircrew The ATS was literally built from the ground up at the Ysterplaat Air Force Base near Cape Town. The design and construction of the purpose-designed and purpose-built facility formed part of the project. 5DT was contracted by Armscor on behalf of the SAAF. The ATS project was unusual in the regard that it was a fairly large development project contracted to a small company directly through Armscor. 5DT has risen to the challenge and is now recognized as a level 5 contractor to Armscor. This puts 5DT in the same category as large contractors such as BAE Systems and Thales. The ATS project is the biggest project ever undertaken by 5DT. The first phase of the project (simulation of fixed-wing aircraft) started in 2004 and the last phase (simulation of helicopters) was completed in 2015. The project value was in excess of 60 million rand. 5DT teamed up with Mabaitisi Consultancy and Training for the last phase of the project.

Several 5DT team leaders and their groups dedicated a large part of their careers to the project and made significant sacrifices. Notable examples are Roderick Mooi (Construction Manager), Paul Olckers (Project Manager – First Phase), Mario Schehle (Project Manager – Final Phase), Handré Stolp (Software Manager and former Software Architect), Wimpie Wiggett (Hardware Design Manager), Liehan Korf (Graphics Manager), Herman van der Elst (Chief Technical Officer) and Nicholas Schepers (Deputy Software Manager and present Software Architect of 5DT). The facility consists of seventeen different rooms and spaces, including a briefing auditorium, a mission planning room, a simulator room for fixed-wing aircraft, a simulator room for helicopters, two classrooms, two cloakrooms, a senior crew room, two crew rooms, two offices, a storeroom, a mini workshop and an entertainment verandah with the best view of Table Mountain in South Africa. The ATS contains the following functionality and features:

• Scenario Manager • Visual Display System (VDS)• Virtual Instruments • Sensor Simulations• Voice Recognition • Mission Planning System• Mission Rehearsal System • Virtual Pilot System• Terrain Databases • Communications System• Aircraft Simulation • Airspace Visualizer• Interface to Command Team Trainer (CTT)• Record and Playback System

“The ATS project took 5DT from being the scrappy underdogs with 15 people, to the world-class team of 70+ that we are today. It was really hard, took a huge amount of sacrifice from everybody involved and there were many times when we wondered whether we had gotten ourselves in too deep. There were a lot of casualties; both 5DT and Armscor personnel and even partner companies, but what we have now is a really strong team of ‘harde-baarde’ that are able to make it look easy. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved and grateful to everybody that made it happen.” – Mario Schehle, COO and ATS Project Manager

The internal development process by 5DT for the ATS project led to the adoption of the so-called ‘Scrum’ agile software development technique which has provided significant results in terms of delivering quality outcomes for the SAAF at a much reduced risk. In Phase 3 of the program, this iterative development technique was expanded to the point where the end user was involved with software releases on a monthly basis, reducing the risk for them and giving them excellent visibility into the progress of the system. 5DT has recently also completed a scaled-down testbed of the Maritime Helicopter Training Simulator at its headquarters in Pretoria, South Africa. This system will be made available for internal viewing on specific days. A short video of the system is available on our YouTube channel. The ATS project has been selected by the South African Department of Defence as a case study of a successful project for its project officer’s course that is presented annually. Course delegates visit the ATS for this purpose. The system has been visited by several international air force delegations. The delegations include (inter alia) the Swedish, Zambian, Taiwanese, United States, United Kingdom and Italian air forces. The project also led to the establishment of the following facilities and capabilities within 5DT:

• Computer-aided design (CAD) facility consisting of several Solidworks workstations

• 3D scanning and 3D printing facility• Systems engineering capability• Configuration management and quality management capability

“We have delivered a highly professional, world-first, innovative product to the South African Air Force, within budget, exceeding the specifications and within schedule. Everyone at 5DT should be extremely proud of what we have achieved. We salute the dedication, hard work and sacrifices of the individuals that worked their hearts out on this project.”

– Paul Olckers, CEO

The VDS software renders different weather conditions (clouds, wind), different sea conditions, 3D entities (ships, aircraft, submarines, survivors, debris), different times of day (day, dusk, night, dawn), terrain databases and a thermal infrared camera view. The ATS utilizes a flexible distributed simulation architecture to harness the power of multiple personal computers towards a single goal. The stable implementation of such an architecture among 31 computers was not a trivial task, but the benefits offered made this task worthwhile. This setup provides the SAAF with significant reliability and efficient redundancy which has contributed to the system’s 100 percent availability for training over the past 5 years. The flight characteristics of several aircraft have been modeled. These included so-called fixed-wing aircraft and rotary wing aircraft (helicopters). The Dakota C-47, Cessna Caravan C-208, Boeing 707 and Lockheed C-130 fixed-wing aircraft and SuperLynx maritime helicopter were simulated. The student and cockpit workstations of the ATS use touchscreens so that students can interact with functional instruments. The full range of flight and navigation instruments is simulated, from basic flight instruments to fully simulated navigation processors and radar systems. Instructors are able to apply errors to instruments and sensors in order to evaluate students’ performance across the range of sensor performance. The ATS is designed with multiple platforms in mind and is able to load different instrument models according to the training requirements. The ATS uses voice recognition technology to allow students to

interact with a virtual pilot. The virtual pilot is programmed to only respond to correctly phrased commands and requests, so students are forced to use the correct terminology and to speak clearly. The voice recognition engine is trained using each student’s voice, so a broad range of accents can be accommodated. The system is also equipped with a multi-channel communications system that is based on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

The Mission Planning System is provided to give students exposure to the type of mission planning that they will eventually encounter in practice. The Mission Planning System is integrated into the rest of the ATS system so that a student’s performance can be measured according to the planned missions. Once a mission has been planned, the student can perform a 3D rehearsal of the planned mission in order to verify specific elements of the flight plan, e.g. clearance of terrain and radio communications. The planned mission can then be flown in the simulator over a virtual terrain (terrain database). The flown simulated mission is recorded and can be played back in the debriefing auditorium. The ATS contains a terrain database that covers the whole of South Africa as well as eight key airfields throughout the country. Each airfield is built completely with runways, taxiways and representative runway lighting. The ATS uses unique terrain paging technology that allows the virtual aircraft to fly across large terrain areas without the loading delay usually associated with large terrains. An interface was developed to link the ATS with the CTT of the South African Navy. This interface facilitates joint force training between the Air Force and the Navy – a first for South Africa.

This project established a solid aerospace and defence simulation capability within 5DT. The final phase of the project was handed over to the SAAF at a ceremony at Ysterplaat Air Force Base in July this year.

Paul Olckers and Mario Schehle handed laser engraved 3D crystals as mementos to the many parties involved in the project’s success. The innovative 3D crystal was designed by Liehan Korf of the 5DT Graphics Group and depicts a maritime helicopter hovering closely above a rough sea surface. 5DT was presented with a commemorative certificate.

We’re embarking on a mentorship programme that we hope will help develop the skill sets of everyone at 5DT, but also strengthen the working relationships and networking capabilities within the organisation.

As organisations grow, there are often potential sources for personal development, beyond job specific roles, that remain untapped. Through this programme we hope to unlock these opportunities.

Martin Schehle is in charge of the programme, and explained the motivation:

“We recently launched our mentorship programme, with the aim of offering everyone in the business guidance in terms of career planning and development, as well as to improve communication in the business. This comes off the back of the EVP survey where career development and learning opportunities were identified as things we should be focussing more on at 5DT. The programme has already assigned mentors to all 5DT employees based on a mentor selection process, and the first mentors discussion and training was held with remote

attendance from some of our US and Australian based mentors. Going forward we’re hoping that the mentees and mentors meet regularly and have productive discussions, as the success of the mentorship programme hinges on this fact. After we have gone through our first cycle, we will gather feedback from everyone and review the effectiveness of the programme to make sure we are still doing the right things.

We hope that the mentorship programme really adds value for all the mentees and mentors alike.”

“Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push

in the right direction.” John C. Crosby
