back night one, note one and pick up exactly where he left off,” SiriusXM’s JR Schumann tells Country Aircheck. “It was an incredible show. He is one of the greatest entertainers that our format has ever seen.” The excitement and energy started early, with Chesney filming the music video for his latest single “Get Along” at the pre-show tailgate. “He came out and did a pop-up show in the tailgate,” WFUS’ Sarah Jacobs says. “It was so cool to shoot the music video with the fans who were there tailgating.” The impromptu video shoot didn’t take away from opening acts Brandon Lay, Old Dominion and Thomas Rhett, says Schumann. “The crowd came early. The stadium had to be at least 70% full when Old Dominion took the stage.” “They played hit after hit, then Thomas Rhett came out and served up his,” says WWKA/Orlando’s Ashley Stegbauer. “They’re all such heavy hitters, you almost forget that you’re there to see Kenny.” Hard to forget when the lights come down, however. “Kenny started the show with a minute-long video of him getting ready for

the tour, tropical locations and a shot of him in the upper decks of Raymond James in a Buccaneers helmet,” Jacobs says. “The crowd went nuts. I assume he’ll cater that part to each market.” “It was just full-throttle the entire show,” Schumann adds. “The coolest moment had to be when he sang ‘Get Along,’ and the major-ity of the crowd already knew every word. You would’ve thought that song had been in his repertoire for years. It was pretty remarkable.” Other highlights included Thomas Rhett singing Uncle Kracker’s part on “When The Sun Goes Down” and Old Dominion’s Matthew Ramsey and Brad Tursi joining Chesney for “Save It For A Rainy Day,” which they co-wrote with the late Andrew Dorff. “It was super sweet, because Kenny talked a little bit about Matt and Brad, and how he respects them and thinks that they’re big stars,” Stegbauer says. Chesney’s setlist spanned his career, including “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright,” though sans David Lee Murphy. Chesney finished with an encore of “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy.” “There was consistent energy from start to finish,” Jacobs says. “There was no ‘this is a good time to get a beer’ moment. No one left disappointed.” –Erin Duvall

Curb’s Rodney Atkins discusses his most influential music:1. Alabama: There was a flea market near our house and you could get bootleg 8-tracks. I had this crazy 8-track tape with Alabama, Charlie Daniels and Foreigner’s 4 all on one tape. I wanted to be Alabama. 2. Charlie Daniels: When I was six years old I asked my parents, ‘How do you get to

be Charlie Daniels when you grow up?’3. Foreigner’s 4: I wanted to sing along with them. Their stuff is timeless. That’s always been something I’ve tried to accomplish in making music; to have songs that people want to sing with you.4. Dwight Yoakam: I grew up in east Tennessee/southeastern Kentucky, in that coalmining world. Dwight sang songs that were cool and fresh, but were things I could relate to at the same time.5. Garth Brooks: He brought out the dreamer in me. He made me want to learn how to write songs and learn how to make a living with music. • Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: I’ve had my head down, trying to finish my new music, so there’s a lot I haven’t heard – like Justin Timberlake’s new album.• “Important” music you just don’t get: I didn’t get the Beatles when I was a kid – until I heard Elvis’ version of “Something.” It made me go, “Whoa, they wrote that song.” As a teenager, that made me go back and re-discover the Beatles. And after that, I was blown away by everything they ever did.• An album you listened to incessantly: Ray Charles’ Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music: My parents had this album when I was a little kid. I didn’t know who was singing – I just knew I liked it. I listened to it all the time.• An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Colter Wall’s “Motorcycle.” He’s a cool kid. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: Right now it’s nursery rhymes (laughs). They’re beautiful. They make you feel like Christmas songs do.

At that point, it’s a spoken word segment and Jason’s idea to have others join him. He and his team led the charge there. I wanted to make sure he had a platform to address his feelings and knew from talking to him it was important to be sensitive to everyone involved, from those who lost their lives and were injured to first responders and beyond. Leading question: Why is Reba the best? She’s just so seasoned. This is something she’s done so well before, and she’s done just about everything under the sun – sitcoms, Broadway, films, performing. Watch her on a talk show.

The Bellamy Brothers’ Howard and David Bellamy put an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to WHBO-AM/Tampa Bay, which was a country station. And all the way down in Florida we used to get a station out of Cincinnati, WCKY, with Wayne Raney. (Howard)

The first time I heard (debut single) “Let Your Love Flow” on the radio, I was traveling with Jim Stafford. We’d played the Sierra Tahoe Casino and were snowed in. Roger Miller, Alice Cooper and Rip Taylor were all playing up the street from us. There was a party in Jim’s suite and they all came. I had the actual single record with me, but it wasn’t officially released yet. There was a radio station in the casino. Rip knew the DJ and told him he wouldn’t leave until the guy played it. I was embarrassed and headed back up to the room – and then I heard it on the radio. Roger deemed it a hit record, on the spot. Thank goodness he was right! (Howard) Once we had a promotion guy con us into driving from Florida to Spokane, to play a free show. We didn’t even have a bus yet; we had a van. There was supposed to be expense money, but that never happened. (Howard) This is when we learned about the word “recoupment.” Which never happened. We were about $3,000 in debt at the end of that trip. (David) Our old steel player, Danny Jones, was fun to travel with. He wouldn’t have done well in this day and time because he was so politically incorrect. (laughs) He knew how to play steel, fish and chase women. That was about it. (David) Our new book is a chronological tale, from our childhood through the music business – all the countries we’ve been to and stories about songs. (David) My last impulse buy was a pair of sunglasses. (David) I bought a cow on impulse. My family’s always been afraid for me to go off by myself in my truck, because I bring things home. (Howard) The most redneck thing we’ve done lately? Our new reality show. (Howard) Our least favorite interview question is, “Are you really brothers?” (Howard) We want to say, “Where in the hell have you been for 42 years?” (David) We’d love to be stuck in Nouméa, New Caledonia. It’s a French island in the South Pacific. It’s a pretty good place to get stuck. (David)

She’s fantastic and completely authentic. A consummate profes-sional, always prepared and enjoys what she’s doing. She wrote me a note after the show saying she wasn’t as nervous as usual and had so much fun. We all have that “here we go” moment when the lights come on, but she brought the A-game. Every time we’ve had her on the show she has gotten a stand-ing O – even if she’s just presenting. She’s so beloved. To answer your leading question: She’s the best because she is the best. No disrespect to our prior hosts at all, but it’s Reba. The flashbacks were a new and well-received addi-tion. Where did that come from and will we see it again? The reason we called them flashbacks is to have them as part of the show going forward, though I don’t know if it will be about a year, an artist or an album specifically. This genre has such rich history and people love to hear those familiar songs again. The idea came from thinking about a performance for Reba being the 25th anniversary of “Does He Love You.” The germination went from there and I have to credit DCP’s Mark Bracco [EVP/Programming & Development], who came in with the idea. What are the stories we might not be aware of behind some of the performances? The lyric video for Keith Urban’s song drove the creative on that. Carrie’s performance was the moment the audience was waiting for, which we’d worked for weeks to keep under wraps. Even the title. We called it “Beautiful Noise” for eight weeks, even though we all knew it was her – wink-wink, nod-nod. So there was mystery and intrigue right up until the single was released the week of the show. Kelsea Ballerini came in with the idea of descending from the ceiling and we thought it would look great on the satellite stage so we could capture all the graphics behind her. With Bebe Rexha and FGL, it’s a quick song at only 2:48, but we wanted to super-size it for television and I’m glad they were open to the choir and gospel feel. How much of an emphasis was there on tone, even in the jokes? It’s definitely not a political show. We’re not one of those that wants to take a stand. We didn’t tell anyone they couldn’t say any-thing, but the idea was to have the audience just enjoy the show. Reba had a couple of fun digs, but it was Reba and we didn’t

belabor any of it. The tone of the music was inspirational, too. “Get Along,” “Most People Are Good,” “Keeper Of The Flame,” “Woman, Amen” and “I Lived It” among others. All of it goes into people staying tuned in. We just wanted to be that warm blanket. No big pop star and the numbers are up. Was that on purpose? Country is big enough to carry its own self, thank you very much? Or did it just not work to have an out-of-format star? We had a lot of pop in the show. Bebe, Julia Michaels and Kelly

Clarkson, though they’re younger pop stars and all compatible with the audience. We always look for a big pop star to kick up the younger demos. A lot of calls went out, but it just didn’t click this year. Final thoughts? I love doing this show, the people I work with, the artists and the Nashville industry. This is my 20th and I’m constantly amazed at what comes our way musically every year. –Chuck Aly
