ONE FLIES, ALL SOAR

IN THIS ISSUE

Damisha Croney returned to Barbados a

champion after participating in the first ever International Netball Festival, hosted in Northern Ireland from October 29th -

November 3rd. Croney, an experienced center, played a pivotal role for the Barbados

team throughout the 5-day tournament, which saw teams from St. Lucia, Botswana and Northern Ireland participating.

The competition which perfectly showcased

female sporting finesse called for not only strong technical ability, but also a high level of mental and physical fitness which Croney and her counterparts possessed.

Croney quickly settled into competition

mode after a practice game, which in fact prepared her for the five intense matches she

would have to play in the five day peri od. Undoubtedly an all-star athlete, she got into her zone as the tournament progressed and

helped to contribute to the 47-38 victory in the finals over hosts Northern Ireland.

Winning the keenly contested final was the

perfect end to her tour. It was a superb

birthday gift for Croney who celebrated with her team mates while in Ireland.

Double Victory in Table Tennis Blackbirds’ Table Tennis team captain, Melanie Scantlebury, and experienced player

Shannon Doughlin copped top honours in

their respective categories, in this year’s edition of the National Table Tennis Championship B Class Finals.

In the mixed singles, Scantlebury faced Timothy Nichols. She raced out to a 2-0 lead

against Nichols but lost steam along the way, allowing a fighting opponent to level it at 2-2. After a series of intense rallies, Scantlebury positioned herself to win the

Championship in the 6th game. She thwarted all attacks by Nichols and finished the match 14-12 in dramatic fashion, to take the title.

The other final saw Shannon Doughlin team

up with Kevin Farley to take the doubles title comfortably. The pair disposed of their

opponents with a score of 3-1.

World Conference for “Apple”

UWI Tennis Coach Damien Applewaithe continues his strides in the tennis world, after

participating in the 2013 ITF Worldwide Coaches Conference. “Apple”, who acquired

ITF Level 3 Coaching Certification last year, traveled to Cancun, Mexico, in early November to take part in the 4 day

conference. This conference focused on the long-term development of a high performance player. Knowledge gained will be applied to the UWI Tennis Programme.

Floyd Reifer Honoured Hard work and dedication should always be recognised and appreciated. With this being

said, it was by no means a surprise when the name of one of the greatest cricketers ever to represent the UWI, was eternalised in

letters of gold on the pavilion of the 3Ws Oval.

Floyd Lamonte Reifer has played a number of roles whilst being affiliated with the UWI: player, coach, mentor, advisor and role model. The active part he played in the

meteoric rise of cricket on campus led to the naming of the balcony of the 3W’s Oval in honor of him, in a ceremony held on

November 14, 2013.

Apart from moulding and developing a core of young cricketers into the most dominant team of this era since his 2006 appointment, Reifer boasts of an impressive personal record as coach. Within his seven year

tenure, Reifer has accumulated eight local titles, with the highlight being in 2012, when he inspired the team to an unprecedented

clean sweep of all titles available in local cricket.

Reifer’s abilities also transcend the shores of Barbados where he has overseen the

development of the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) team in regional competition.

The campus has done a great job in

showcasing and reminding its visitors of the strong cricketing history and culture in the

region and internationally. Moreover, with

this commemoration and recognition, it has also done an even greater job in forever remembering the iconic catalyst of local cricket supremacy in Mr. Floyd Reifer.

2nd Place for Hamilton St. Lucian National Volleyballer, Dania Hamilton, continues to have an outstanding

year in Beach Volleyball, finishing second in the recently concluded Sizzlin Sands Barbados Sunsplash Beach Volleyball Tournament. Hamilton teamed up with Sharon Bovell at Brandons Beach to put on a display that perfectly exemplified an international standard of the sport.

The duo powered through the preliminary round winning each match comfortably by a

2-0 margin, topping their group of four teams to directly qualify for the semifinals.

Despite another 2-0 victory in the semis, Hamilton struggled with her game. She suffered a migraine and battled with the heat

but still mustered sufficient support for her team mate, who took charge at that point.

Drawing from her 5 years experience, Hamilton recovered for the finals and had her

sights set on the title. The score was locked at 12-12 in the final set of the title match, but

the seasoned Blackbirds Captain suffered an untimely injury, from a diving attempt to keep a point alive. The team subsequently

lost 3 consecutive points and the championship, having to settle for second

place.

Having canceled tours to California and Costa Rica to focus on studies, Hamilton resumed volleyball duties on November 27th.

She traveled to Trinidad & Tobago to participate in the final tour of the 2013 NORCECA (North & Central America and

Caribbean) Beach Volleyball Circuit. The St. Lucian women are currently ranked 14th of 23

teams.

Gay the Bodybuilder Football, Cricket and Netball are some of the more popular sports that Cave Hill students participate in. However, Jeffrey Gay isn’t inclined to compete in any of these, as the 21

year old’s sport of choice is Bodybuilding.

At the age of 12, Gay’s focus was on athletics. Little did he know at that time, that he would eventually fall in love with another sport. As he

got deeper into his athletics programme, lifting weights to gain strength, Gay stumbled upon a

Bodybuilding magazine in his quest to learn more about weight training. This magazine peaked his interest. He subsequently saw a

newspaper ad for a Bodybuilding show and conceded to his curiosity. Three years later, Gay entered his first Bodybuilding competition, “Mr. School Boy”, which he eventually won the senior division in 2012. He also placed 4th in the INBF Amateur World Championships in that year.

Jeffrey continued his Body building career, flexing his way more into the local spotlight.

Most recently, in August this year he participated in the Mr. Barbados Junior

Nationals. Gay’s preparation spanned 16 weeks and involved weight training 5 days per week.

Gay was awarded 2nd

place for his efforts.

Gay now settles into preparations for his Management Studies final exams. Next year he will seek to improve on his Bodybuilding, with the hope of eventually attaining professional status in an internati onally recognised association of the sport.

7K Hat-trick for Blackett

Already in outstanding form for 2013, Jerome Blackett picked up another race title after he completed a hat-trick of victories in the

annual UWI Road Race 7K run. The event which featured two new twists to compliment the now established 7K run, saw a total of 87 runners and 46 walkers under

starter’s orders on November 10th

.

Blakett completed his run in 25.21 minutes

closely followed by Pierre Standford a few seconds behind, while Carlie Pipe was the first female across the line in 29.24 minutes.

Rodney Blackman and Marlean Stewart copped the top spot in the men’s and

women’s 5K walk respectively.

This year, the walk component was reduced to 5K and confined to the campus’ compounds with a 4 lap loop of a defined

course, whilst to commemorate the campus’ 50th anniversary a special road race relay was introduced; ‘run for 50 relay’. Chip timing was

also introduced.

Young Alumnus Takes Title They came, they saw and they surely conquered. That was the mission of a determined Young Alumnus team which captured the 2013 edition of the Take the Charge Basketball Competition, played here at the Cave Hill Campus.

Comprised of numerous Premiere League players, the team overcame a determined

and well organized Connection 2.0 squad, who also boasted some of the island’s best young talents. The teams made it to the

finals in contrasting fashions, with Connection 2.0 suffering only one defeat in the prelims whilst Young Alumnus endured three.

After disposing of the previously undefeated Kixx and Giggles in their semi-final 2 - 1in the

best of three series, Young Alumnus saved their best spell of basketball for the finals series. Led by key contributions from captain

Keefe Birkett, star shooter Jamar King and eventual Post Season MVP Akeem Marsh,

UWI Road Race action

Young Alumnus secured Game 1 comfortably by a 78 - 68 score line. Marsh kept the defence well organised whilst Birkett and

King fulfilled their scoring obligations up front.

Connection 2.0 came out firing on all cylinders for Game 2, knowing that a loss

would hand the title to a Young Alumnus team which was riding high on confidence

after Game 1. Unfortunately, even the best efforts of Regular Season MVP Mark Bridgeman wasn’t enough to turn the

fortunes and once again, Young Alumnus ran away with the game 86 - 62 in a one-sided match, and were rightfully crowned the 2013 Take The Charge Basketball Champions.

Greetings & Best Wishes

arrival of two very important events in y our

life, let me, on behalf of the Academy of Sport Cave Hill first wish for

you all the very best in your Semester 1 Exams and a subsequent enjoyable Christmas Season. We look forward to your return in January 2014.”

Horton Dolphin, Head.
