Mission, Vision, and Values

In 2013, the Hangar board and staff engaged in energizing work on a long-range plan that takes a bold look at how we can use our resources, talents, treasure, and technology to ensure that the Hangar remains a thriving part of our commu-nity. This five-year plan focuses on stabilizing our finances, strengthening our current programs and services, and planning exciting new opportunities to better serve our community. It reaffirms our commitment to our mission and core val-ues as a not-for-profit community organization, and it prioritizes artistic excel-lence and innovation, the best professional standards, and the highest quality experience for all who participate. Through the process of developing our new long-range plan, we had the opportunity to fully articulate our mission, vision, and values as an organization.

The Hangar gives back to the community through dona-tions of Mainstage tickets for local not-for-profit fundrais-ers and through discounted space rentals for community not-for-profits. So far in 2014, the Hangar has provided:

MissionThe Center for the Arts at Ithaca, Inc., d.b.a. the Hangar The-atre, is committed to providing exceptional theatre experiences of high professional quality to enrich, enlighten, educate, and entertain the diverse audience in the Finger Lakes region. Strong education and training programs are central parts of our commitment to the local and national artistic communities.

VisionThe Hangar Theatre produces world-class theatre offering plays and musicals, revivals, and new works that reflect the diversity of our region. A Hangar production is synonymous with artistic excellence. Our work leaves an impact and has a strong presence locally, nationally, and online.

We support and enhance the Ithaca arts community by using our building as a com-munity arts space, bringing a diverse group of people into our theatre to experience arts of all kinds.

We develop the next genera-tion of theatre goers and arts lovers by creating a culture of arts engagement.

We are the flagship theatre of the Finger Lakes region, paving the way for other arts organizations to flourish with our support.

In April 2014, the Hangar ACES threw their first fundraising event. Over 150 young professionals attended the RED Event, raising over $3,000 to benefit the Hangar’s Professional Training Programs.

Now at the Box Office: New Ticketing System

As you may know, the Ticket Center in downtown Ithaca closed in October 2013. This provided the Hangar with the opportunity to upgrade to a new comprehensive ticketing and database sys-tem. We can now process ticket transactions for our patrons in-house at our new box office located in the theatre lobby, and it has been an exciting and fulfilling transition. As with any new technology, we are still working out the kinks in the system even as we attempt to provide the best customer service possible. Our entire team is engrossed in printer drivers, scanners, server connectivity, and the challenges that arise when a new system goes live. As the technical issues are resolved and operations are streamlined, our new ticketing system will make it easier and more convenient for you to purchase tickets. Thank you for your patience through this significant growth and transition at the Hangar, and please feel free to contact us with any ques-tions, comments, or concerns.

Hangar for All Seasons Opportunities

With our space now available year-round, we are able to present special performances and provide other community organizations a venue to host their own performances, fundraisers, and special events.

This fall is shaping up to have a great impact with the Hangar presenting Back to the Garden, CHARADES, and the Burns Sisters Hol-iday Concert. Look for Dan Smalls Presents: Suzanne Vega, The Bad Plus, and An Evening With George Win-ston. We also look forward to hosting an SPCA film screen-ing, Megan Shull book sign-ing, Vitamin L concert, and several private events.

Hangar ACES Membership GrowthIn 2013, the Hangar launched a new program aimed at increasing the number of young profes-sionals represented in both the theatre’s audience and in its volunteer leadership ranks. The Hangar ACES is at once a social group and a philanthropic one, with opportunities for people ages 21 to 39 to see the shows, network at special events, get familiar with the theatre’s mission and programming, and—if they choose—participate as non-profit leaders. Any interested ACES member can choose to sit on the Leadership Council, which offers opportunities to interact with Hangar staff and board leaders, work on special events and fundraising, and gain insights into how the theatre operates. Membership in the Hangar Aces has grown over 25% in its second year, from 27 inaugural members to 34 today. This year we’re looking for ways to get the ACES involved to support other local arts organizations. If you or someone you know is interested in joining the ACES or finding out more, email [email protected], call 607.273.8588, or friend us on Facebook at facebook.com/hangar.aces.

Summer is often a time of transition, including at the Hangar. We would like to welcome new staff members and say good-bye to an old friend.

Helen Clark, Education and Community Engagement Man-ager. Helen received her BFA in Acting from the University of Connecticut and is a 2015 MFA Acting and Theater Ed candidate at Goddard College. She began her career

in theatre education at The Berkshire Theatre Festival as Artist in Residence and has been teaching for the Hangar and performing theater in Ithaca and the surrounding areas since 2007.

Abigail Scaduto, Annual Fund Manager. Abigail received her MA in Museum Studies from Syracuse University and has 5 years of nonprofit develop-ment experience. She fell in love with ‘behind the scenes’ work in the 10th grade during a

school production of West Side Story.

Alyssa Stoeckl, Marketing Manager. Alyssa is a recent graduate of Ithaca College, obtaining her BS in Theatre Arts Management (‘13) and an MBA in Business Administra-tion (‘14). Alyssa has always had a passion for the arts and

has gained experience in the field through various intern-ships and coursework. She is very excited to join the Hangar staff and to bring great art to the Ithaca community.

Jesse Bush, Associate Artistic Director & Head of Education. In pursuit of new opportunities on the west coast, Jesse Bush recently left the Hangar after 8 seasons of acting and directing, as well as managing our educational pro-gramming. Jesse leaves us with these parting words:

“As I prepare to enter a new and excit-ing adventure for myself and my family,

I find myself reflecting on my time in Ithaca. I am so very grateful for the artistic home that has been provided for me during the past eight seasons at the Hangar. My work there has allowed me to grow as an artist and an educator in so many ways. This community’s support for the arts is remarkable, and I am honored to have been a part of it. I will be so proud to represent Ithaca and the Hangar in my new endeavors!” — Jesse Bush

All season, our audience members have had the opportuni-ty to attend our new Prologue Series 45 minutes before each Mainstage show. Our Drama League Directing fellows guide participants through a pre-show discussion about the themes surrounding the production, and audience members have the chance to see pre-show activities and ask questions about the-atre production. We’ve gotten lots of positive feedback about this new program from audience members. This has also been a great learning opportunity for our Drama League Directors, giving them the chance to speak in an intimate setting about their experiences with theatre, what it is like to direct at the Han-gar, and the journey that has brought them to this point in their careers.
