After what seemed like ahorribly long summer, theanticipated hockey season has finallybegun. There has been a lot of hypearound the Vancouver Canucks sinceHenrik Sedin won the Hart Trophyand the Art Ross Tropy last season. Itcame as no surprise that after it wasannounced that Robeto Luongowould no longer be serving as thecaptain, Henrik Sedin was named the13th captain of the VancouverCanucks. With his brother Daniel byhis side, critics and fans have saidthat they will lead the Canucks totheir first ever Stanley Cupchampionship.

It wasn’t just Henrik’semergence as a top NHL player thatgot the fans cheering in anticipation.During the past summer, theVancouver Canucks managed toacquire five key players, includingtwo top notch defensemen, something the Vancouver Canucksreally needed. Dan Hamhuis, a BCnative, was an unrestricted freeagent during the summer. He endedup signing a six year contract withthe Canucks worth twenty sevenmillion dollars, even though he wasoffered more money from otherteams. Hamhuis has already provenhis worth, but unfortunately, hesuffered an injury to his foot that hassidelined him for two weeks. KeithBallard, a defenseman that theCanucks acquired in a trade with theFlorida Panthers, had a mediocrestart to the season, and has been

PORTSsidelined with a concussion.

Besides acquiring two amazingdefencemen, the Vancouver Canuckssigned both Raffi Torres and MannyMaholtra, a leftwing and a centre. With their back end now stableDan Hamhuis, Alexander Edler,Christian Ehrhoff, and Keith Ballard, the Vancouver Canucks look like theperfect Stanley Cup winning team onpaper. So what’s stopping us fromwinning it? Roberto Luongo. For thepast two seasons, the VancouverCanucks have been eliminated in thesecond round of the playoffs by noneother than the Chicago Blackhawks. However, Roberto Luongo has had a 43-2 record and a 91.5 save percentage.

I sat on the kitchen floor quietly. Leaning my head backvomit on the floor of my best friend’s house. I could hear the music thumping on the patio louder as the door was opened andsomeone came in. When I saw Natasha drunkenly stumble into the kitchstart spinning again, tilting and tossing my stomach

“Chris got you wasted, huh?” she whispered in myvodka I’m sure I smelled of as well.

“Looks like someone got you wasted, too,” I said back. I knew the bathroom was only a few feet away, but with ourcombined lack of balance, getting there would be difficult.

“Need some help?” Chris poked his head around the corner of the kitchen door. Natasha giggled hysterically, patted myarm, and told Chris that I needed to find a place to relax. Angry at this betrayal, I lloudly before the patio door slammed and I was alone with Chris. The bass continued thumping silently in the background.

I tried to step away from Chris and stumbled, tripping over my own feet. Hmildly uncomfortable at his touch, I was grateful for the support.

“Want to go somewhere quieter?” I knew the music could be heard through the entire house and wondered what hemeant. Pulling me towards the bathroom, he whispered, “It’s quieter in here…”

The last drink I had hit me full force as Chris sat me up on the bathroom counter. Leaning his head on my shoulder, he toyedwith the bottom of my shirt. I looked up at the fluorescent lighon the bottom of the bulbs. Chris picked me up and laid me down on the floor. The walls swirled green and gray, but I saw witstrange clarity the shower curtain, little ducks marching upwhisper that tickled my stomach like a feather, a hand gliding down my leg and back up, lips pressed lightly on my shoulder, the smell of cologne I wasn’t used to surrounding me. The motalcohol take me away, thinking that it wasn’t quieter in here at all. I could still feel the bass from the music outside pounthrough my body.

I opened my eyes to bright sunshinethe nausea hit me. As I stretched my arms above my head, my elbow hit something soft. Before I could register what it was, Chgrunted. Draping his still sleeping armTaking deep breaths to stop from puking, I carefully slipped off the couch and stepped softly to the bathroom. The door waslocked. I could hear Natasha singing alongtried not to cry. My throat felt full and my cheeks were getting hot from the effort of holding back my tears. At the start of September, lotsof Grade 9s were holding thetimetable and the map of Pinetree, staring at the paper and looking aroundthe school. I have seen a lot of peopleasking their friends where thatclassrooms were, and what block wasnext. We all had those unsettling, anxious expressions on our faces. F

how we behaved at that time, almosteveryone can tell that we were Grade9s.

However, now, it’s completelydifferent. Who has seen anyonebehaving like that anymore? No onehas. Well, that’s because all Grade 9shave already adjusted pretty well toPinetree Secondary. Nowadays, most ofus have remembered the timetable, andthe location of classrooms long ago. Nomore confusion on those two thingsanymore ^_^.

Anyways, now Grade 9s arebecoming more familiar to PinetreeHopefully in another several months orweeks we’ll truly treat Pinetree as ourhome. <INBOX>

What the FutureHolds

No one knows exactlywhat the future will hold, andthat thought can befrightening. We could allbecome the next Einstein, orthe next Michael Phelps, or thenext Justin Bieber, and maybethe world could even come toan end in 2012. I guess you cancall it fate, or destiny forwhatever happens in thefuture... and how can you besure whether or not you willlike what you see?

The future is a scaryplace. It’s a place where thereare no guarantees, a placewhere there are noreassurances, a place whereanything is possible. No one isassured a role in society.Countless things can gohaywire in the near future. Aperson may become heavilyindebted from credit card billsand bank loans. A person mayspend eight years in medicalschool and come out without ajob. A person may wake up oneday to discover that he/she isin fact, the crazy cat ladyhe/she used to torment as achild. No one wants to be inthese positions, but the worldcan’t function without thesetypes of people. We can’t allsucceed. Someone has to bethe unlucky one. The questionis, who? Even the slightestpossibility of complete anddisastrous failure frightens meto my core.

This vagueness is quiteunsettling, especially forsomeone who likes to beprepared for what is coming. Ican’t prevent the future fromcoming, I can’t change whathas happened, and I certainlycan’t predict what will happen. All I can do is try my best toovercome obstacles and pavemyself a road of strength andhappiness.
