Hi Everyone,

RESIDENT NOTICES Morning Tea at The Henley Patrick and Samantha have been working with the Social Committee over the last few weeks to explore ways to make our morning teas function better. Whilst we want to support a 7 day morning tea, spreading attendance over each day can sometimes make for a lonely affair! It has been decided that we will balance one large morning tea each week on Level 2 with more intimate morning teas available in the cafe for the other 6 days. Although the cafe does serve to customers outside of our resort, it is very much our resource. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available at no charge in the cafe for morning tea and we have a new mini-urn for hot water. You are of course welcome to buy a coffee from Derek and Annalise should you wish! The larger morning tea events will be each Tuesday with our Birthday Sing-along on the 2nd Tuesday each month and a 'Welcome to New Residents' morning tea on the Tuesday before our end of month Happy Hour.

The New Henley Bus Outings Now that our new bus has arrived, the social committee has been exploring ways to generate more use and you will see that May’s calendar has a number of day trips that we hope you will avail yourselves to. This month, the committee has planned trips to the Southport Botanical Gardens with a guided tour from Peter and Lyn Reilly, High Tea at the French Lantern on Hope Island and a wine tasting and lunch at the Canungra Valley Vineyards. There is no charge to use the bus, and Samantha will be at the helm.

Lost and Found Silver Necklace with charms was found in B1 over the Anzac weekend. A set of keys have been found on B2 on the 28th April Please see reception if either of these items could be yours.

Staying Strong, Fit, and Independent Exercise and physical activity are great ways to have fun, be with friends and enjoy the outdoors. But regular exercise and physical activity can also have a direct impact on your everyday life. The benefits they provide can help you stay strong and fit enough to perform your daily activities, get around, and maintain your independence. At The Henley, we’re passionate about our residents making the most of their retirement feeling fit and energetic! Older adults who are inactive lose ground in three areas that are important for staying healthy and independent: • endurance • strength • balance Research suggests that you can maintain or at least partially restore these three areas through exercise and physical activity and that doing so improves fitness. For example, increasing your endurance will make it easier for you to walk farther, faster, and uphill. Strengthening your muscles will make you stronger. Improving your balance can help your sense of body control, and increasing flexibility helps keep your body limber and flexible. The goal is to be creative and choose from each of the three types -- endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility. Mixing it up will help you reap the benefits of each type of exercise, as well as reduce the risk for injury. Endurance, or aerobic, activities like brisk walking or swimming increase your breathing and heart rate and improve the health of your heart, lungs and circulatory system. Strength exercises like lifting weights and using resistance bands can increase muscle strength. Lower-body strength exercises also will improve your balance. Increased muscle strength can maintain your ability to do everyday activities like climbing stairs Balance exercises like tai chi and our water exercise program can improve your ability to control and maintain your body’s position, whether you are moving or still. Good balance is important to help prevent falls and avoid the disability that may result from falling. It's never too late to start! Exercise and physical activity can have a positive effect on your everyday life. Even if you think you're too old or too out of shape to exercise, becoming active on a regular basis will give you more energy and the ability to do things more easily, faster, and for longer than before. If you're already active, keep up the good work. If you don't exercise now, it's never too late to start.

National Police Service Medal Recognizing our residents and their achievements; Richard Shaw was awarded this National Police service medal in April 2016 as a recognition and honor of the unique contribution and significant commitment that he has given by being a sworn in member of the Australian police services for 32 years. Richard has served in all ranks from constable to retiring as Super Intendent. This medal is just one of many that Richard has been awarded throughout his career in the force. From the Henley Family, Richard we would like to extend our congratulations to you on this occasion.

ANZAC DAY at The Henley On Monday, 25th April, on Level 2, an ANZAC DAY service and concert were well attended by our residents. John Lynch led the service and emceed the concert. A variety of well-known songs associated with the Wars fought throughout the 20th century was played by Shirley and Loretta. John Summers, a guest artist, treated us all with his singing and guitar playing. One piece, in particular, was his own beautiful composition, ‘Australia – My Own’. Many thanks to our guest - John Summers, John Lynch – emcee, Barry and Glenda Carter and ladies for the afternoon tea and behind-the-scenes assistance.

A Message from the Diversational Therpay team!!

The key to happiness is to keep active both mentally and physically. No matter what age you are, getting up each and every day with a positive outlook will promote a better quality of life. Living your life to the full and mixing with positive happy people will ultimately rub off on to you, it has a domino effect. So here at The Henley we try to encourage residents to socialise by getting together in fun filled activities. Although at times you may like to retreat to the serene surroundings of your units (and we all need quiet times) we can benefit so much more by simply joining in on the many events held here at The Henley. Community living is a wonderful way to enjoy retirement, live life to the full and create your own happiness. Have a great month and happy Mother’s Day From Gayle and Vince
