Dear Tom, I have a chemical-water mixture that I use to spray new, rolled steel. The spray nozzles we use keep clogging up with deposits, which causes an odd popping noise in the pumps. Can you help?S.S., Virginia

Are you sure that popping sound isn’t coming from your break- room? Seriously, first, it sounds like the pump was running at lower pressures and had greater flows, which caused the pump to find a “set point” to the far right of the pump curve. In turn, the pump cavitated and damage resulted. To prevent this from happening to your replacement pumps, installing a bag vessel like the new Global Filter 304 stainless steel system would help to filter out particulates, as it is sized to be slightly smaller than the nozzles installed in the spray bar. This would ‘protect’ the nozzles from plugging. As well, to remove the excessive deposits, a biodegradable, green-friendly, lime remover like Rydlyme can be dumped down the drain.
