A Forgotten Avenue

A person during his daily life goes through different states, different struggles; some good some bad. A person may ask, if Allāh S is All Loving, Most Merciful then why does He put His beloved creation through bad times?

The answer to this is simple to understand; if Allāh S only gave his creation goodness and happiness in this world, then this world would be heaven (as it is only in heaven where a person will have no sorrow). Secondly as we know this world is a test for man, through the goodness, Allāh S wants to see if we continue to show gratitude to Him, and do we still stay dependant on him. And through testing times, Allāh S want to see if we continue believing in Allāh S or do we let go.

During testing times, we try every avenue in order to resolve it. If we are in a financial difficulty, we go straight to the financial advisor. If we are planning to buy a house, we go straight to the mortgage advisor. However, we forget the main

avenue, which was taught and shown to us by Prophet Muhammed s. What is this? This is the forgotten avenue of du’ā. Allāh S has mentioned in the Qur’ān,

“And your Lord has said, ‘Call upon Me and I will answer you…’”

(2:186)

We find many incidents in the life of our Prophet s, in which he would turn to Allāh S. One of these is at the time of the Battle of Badr, where the night before while the

small army of 313 slept, Sayyidina Abu Bakr t says, “I was outside the tent of

Prophet Muhammed s and I heard him making du’ā to Allāh S for the success of

the Muslim army.” This was the state of the Beloved Prophet s who would see a cloud and would turn to Allāh S fearing that it could be a punishment.

So let us take example of that person who we claim to love and bring this quality of du’ā into our lives. There are three ways in which a du’ā is accepted:

1. Whatever was asked for will be given.

2. You will be saved from a calamity, in place of what you asked for.

3. Its reward will be reserved for you in the hereafter.

Ḥajj: A Lesson of a Lifetime

By Mawlānā Asim Khan As the month of Dhul-Ḥijjah arrives once again, millions of fortunate Muslims from every corner of the world will undertake the journey of a lifetime; fulfilling their obligation of Ḥajj. In a display of an-nihilating the self they replace all exterior symbols of individuality, affluence and image with two sim-ple anonymous sheets of cloth. All accents and lan-guages are unified with the chorus of the talbiyah, proclaiming one message in one language. In their quest for divine acceptance and ultimately forgive-ness, the pilgrims complete rites and rituals which signify the re-enactment of profound historical events that hold significant and enduring lessons, which are to be engrained into the remainder of their lives. A life changing experience if the Ḥajj is performed correctly, with the right intention and understand-ing, these countless lessons include lessons of sac-rifice, patience, equality and simplicity, to name a few. However, with the overwhelming majority of the ummah not being physically present for the Ḥajj, what lessons can they derive in their respec-tive countries during this blessed period, such that they too can change their lives for the better? If we reflect over the origins of the rites of Ḥajj, we find that the basis of many of them rest in pivotal moments and events from the life of the Prophet

Ibrāhīm u. These moments and events have been

immortalised by Allāh S through their inclusion as rites of Ḥajj till the day of judgement for a reason. They represent some of the greatest demonstra-tions of human potential and achievement in the face of some of the most challenging examinations. All of the character traits and achievements of the

Prophet Ibrāhīm u are worthy of mention, and in-

deed several have been by Allāh S Himself in the Qur’ān. However, there is one quality in particular that is common to all of these events and is recog-nised by the ‘ulamā as being the most distinguish-

ing quality of Ibrāhīm u. The Qur’ān has beauti-fully captured this quality in the following verse:

And when his Lord said to him, “Submit!” He said, “I

submit to the Lord of all the worlds.” (2:131)

The level of submission demonstrated by the

Prophet Ibrāhīm u, and indeed members of his immediate family, transcends the dictates of hu-man intellect and emotion. His initial contact with the area that would one day become Makkah and host the Ka‘bah, consisted of travelling there with

his wife Hājar u and their infant, Ismā‘īl u. Upon arrival they found a valley void of any vegetation

and water. Ibrāhīm u submitted fully to the in-

structions of Allāh S leaving his family there in a vulnerable state as there was no sustainable means of survival, purely in the trust of his Lord. As he turned and walked away, suppressing all emotions and reasoning, his wife followed him, incessantly repeating whether he was abandoning them in this barren land; to which he remained silent. Finally,

when she asked whether Allāh S had ordered him to do this and he affirmed it, she immediately sub-mitted and putting all rationality to one side pro-claimed with complete composure, “In which case

Allāh S will not let us perish.” Another example of the total submission to the

commands of Allāh S by Ibrāhīm u, along with his

son Ismā‘īl u, is preserved in the ritual of the stoning of the jamarāt in Minā and the subsequent sacrifice of an animal. The incident has been succinctly captured in the Qur’ān, from the time when Ibrāhīm u prayed for a son:

“O my Lord, bless me with a righteous son.” So, We gave him the good news of a forbearing boy. Thereafter, when he (the boy) reached an age in which he could work with him, he (Ibrāhīm) said, “O my little son, I have seen in a dream that I am slaughtering you, so consider, what is

your opinion?” He said, “O my dear father, do what you have been ordered to do. You will find me, insha’Allāh, one of those who endure patiently. “So, when both of

them submitted themselves (to Allāh’s will), and he laid him on his forehead (to slaughter him), and then We

called out to him, “O Ibrāhīm, you did make the dream come true.” This is how We reward those who are good

in their deeds. (37:100-105) After requesting and being granted a son at such a late

stage in his life, Ibrāhīm u’s loyalty and submission was

again examined by Allāh S as he was ordered to slaugh-ter his son. A son who was now capable of supporting his father. A son in whom the father had vested great

The Life Of

‘Īsā u A Prophet Of Islam However ‘Īsā u was not discouraged nor was he disheart-

ened, and he continued to convey and spread the message of

Allāh S with full determination and bravery. He spent most of

his time and days travelling from place to place, teaching peo-

ple of the world about the oneness of Allāh S. He conveyed

to them the commands of Allāh S and called them back to

the straight path and the path to success and salvation. Like

all the Prophets, ‘Īsā u called people towards the worship of

one Allāh. He said to the people, “Fear Allāh S and obey me.

Allāh S is my lord, therefore worship Him only. If you worship

someone other then Allāh S, you will never enter Paradise.

Where ever ‘Īsā u went, he would also convey to the

people the arrival of the last Prophet, who was to come after

him, whose name would be Muhammed and Ahmed (two of

the names of Prophet Muhammed s) . Therefore, it was

through ‘Īsā u that Allāh S told the people of the coming of

Prophet Muhammed s, the last Prophet.

‘Īsā u travelled through many villages, towns and cities

calling all towards right and stopping them from evil, he in-

vited both rich and poor towards Allāh S. He wanted to save

them from the evil that they were in and bring them back to

goodness, like with all Prophet the ignorant rejected him, but

many had accepted his mission and believed in his message.

Many of the believers were from amongst the poor. They

loved, respected and honoured ‘Īsā u and stood by him in

good times and bad. These people had no excuse in not believ-

ing ‘Īsā u, as they had recognised his greatness in way of

virtues, moral, character and honesty. In turn they were pre-

pared to sacrifice their lives and belonging for the sake of his

mission, of spreading the religion of Allāh S. These people are

referred to as the Hawariyyin (Disciples) in the Quran.

‘Īsā u did not have a home to call his own, nor was he mar-

ried. He would spend the entire day in spreading the message

of Allāh S and he would spend his nights where ever he may

be. He became increasingly respected and popular day by

day. This built fear amongst the leaders of the time, that they

would loose their control and power over the people, therefore

they tried their utmost best to defame ‘Īsā u, however as

time passed their fears became reality, and started to loose

control of the people, hence their enmity and hatred grew. In

desperation they plotted to kill ‘Īsā u, but it would not be

easy with his ever growing following. However they soon de-

vised the “perfect plan”.

The leaders went directly to the governing bodies, and ac-

cused ‘Īsā u of many things, telling them that he wished to

become king and takeover their leadership, and that he does

not obey the law of the land. The leaders persuaded the gov-

ernors to send out an arrest warrant straight away if they

wanted to be saved from his evil.

This was enough to convince the governors and they ordered

the arrest of ‘Īsā u. However Allāh S is all-knowing and he

informed ‘Īsā u of the plot which is against him, thus ‘Īsā

u gathered his Hawariyyin (Disciples) and said, “the time for

our test and trial has come. I will not be with you for much

longer. Therefore I pass on the responsibility of spreading and

preaching the message of Allāh S. Do you promise to fulfil this

task?” to which the Hawariyyin replied “we make a promise to

you that we will always remain the helpers of Allāh S and his

religion, and we ourselves will remain steadfast in our belief in

Allāh S, the only lord and creator.”

hopes and ambitions; through whom the inheritance of ‘ilm and nubuwwah could be passed on. Once again Ibrāhīm u

confirmed his allegiance and submitted fully to the injunction of Allāh S, casting aside any conflicting feelings and at-tachments, and also found in his young son the same zeal; submitting without any resistance. On route to the appointed

place of sacrifice, Shayṭān appeared in front of him in order to prevent him from fulfilling the command. Ibrāhīm u, re-maining firm and focussed on carrying out the instruction, brushed aside the whisperings of Shayṭān and pelted him with stones. Shayṭān appeared before him three times in total; almost as though Shayṭān knew the gravity of the human

success that was about to be achieved and how this success would be acclaimed by Allāh S; by making the Qurbānī an act of attaining Allāh S’s pleasure for both the pilgrim and non-pilgrim alike, until the end of time.

PARENTS

In this short article, I would like to mention how we should respect our parents. We should respect and

appreciate our parents everyday. Being kind and dutiful, means to obey them and show our love and

respect them. It also means talking to them in the most polite manner, and not to shout.

Islam says being kind to parents is one of the best acts of worship; a muslim can do to get closer to Allāh

S. Parents deserve a lot of respect because of the help, support and love they give to us. Allāh S has said

that after worshipping him you should fulfil the rights of your parents. Allāh S also tells us to make lots of

du’ā for our parents, Allāh S is happy with those who please their parents. Our parents make lots of sacri-

fices to feed, educate and clothe us, so they deserve lot of love, respect and honour in return.

We can honour our parents in ways such as buying gifts for them, serving them, helping them in work

around the house and saying kind words to them and not shouting at them. And when they become old

and weak, we need to take care of them and they expect you to take care of them, like how the took care

of us.

We need to be obedient, kind and merciful to our parents. Allāh S forbids from saying bad things to our

parents. In the Qurān in many places parents are mentioned straight after the name of Allāh S, this shows

how high of a status parents have.

Being kind to our parents does not stop after they both leave this world, but by us making du’ā for them

we assist them in the grave and the hereafter.

PROPHET MUHAMMED (PEACE BE UPON HIM)

Allāh has made him the best of creation,

Who is loved in many nations,

His name is Muhammed peace be upon him,

And may Allāh shower his blessings on him,

Successfully, many people accepted what they had heard.

He did this with such kindness,

He brought a light through kindness,

He was a kind and loving teacher,

His duty and job was to be a preacher,

We wish we could see his beauty,

When we are in our graves, we will absolutely,

When will be asked the 3 questions,

The people who get the right will have no depression,

They will enter the perfect heaven,

There’s not 1 but 7,

And we would not have known about this,

If it wasn’t for the prophet s, may he have eternal bliss.

The Prophet Muhammad s has said: “There is no deed that Allāh S loves more

during ‘Īd-ul-Ad-hã other than the slaughter of a sacrificial animal. The sacrificial

animal will appear during the day of judgement with its horns, hair and nails as

witness to the deed in the name of Allāh S. The blood of the sacrificed animal is

placed near Allāh S before it flows to the earth. Glad tidings to those who

sacrifice.”

(Meanings of the Hadith from Tirmidzi, Ibn Majah)

One trick of Shaytān

One trick of Shaytān is to allow a person to perform a certain

number of good deeds with continuity, so that he feels he is very

religious, while keeping him neglectful of many other commands

of the Sharī‘ah.
