Prysmian SpA reports 9-month 2014 results

The Board of Directors of Prys-mian SpA has approved the Group’s consolidated results for the first nine months of 2014.

Sales of €5014 million were up by 0.2% over nine-month sales in 2013. Operating income was reported at €249 million down by 25.3%, com-

pared with 2013. Net profit for the

company stood at €134 million, also down by some 25.1%, compared with the first nine moths f 2013.

“The results for the first nine months of 2014 show generally stable profitability, excluding the adverse impact of the Western Link project,” explained CEO Valerio Bat-tista. “The pace of volume recovery in the telecom cables business continues to exceed expectations, while the building wires market is showing a slight improvement in trend. For the fourth quarter, we expect high-voltage and oil industry cables to make a bigger contribu-tion than in previous quarters, and submarine cables to confirm their strong performance. Geographi-cally, positive performance in North America and Asia has served as a partial counterbalance to the weak environment in Europe and deterio-ration in South America. The Group continues to focus on cost contain-

ment and making its manufactur-ing footprint ever more efficient, by initiating the implementation of a regional supply chain in Europe.”

LS Cable & System Demos “World’s First” Superconducting DC CableLS Cable & System of Korea announced that it has started demonstration of the world’s first superconducting DC cable.

The company had completed installa-

tion of an 80 kV superconducting DC cable at its Superconducting Power System Center in Jeju Island at the end of October and on November 19, 2014, started a system demonstration that will last for six months. This holds significance as a turning point for Korea because, despite starting development of superconduct-ing cable technology much later than the USA and Germany, the country has now become an industry leader after approxi-mately 10 years of technology development.Having started superconducting cable development in 2001, LS Cable & System succeeded in producing an AC cable in 2004 as the fourth in the world fol-lowing Denmark, the USA and Japan. In 2013, the company developed a DC superconduct-ing cable for the first time in the world, thus becoming the only company in the world possess-ing both AC and DC supercon-ducting technologies.

Maccaferri & SAMP: LIFE-Inno.Pro.Wire Project Sustainable Challenge Kick-Off Meeting HeldOn October 29, 2014, the kick-off meeting for the LIFE-Inno.Pro.Wire project was held at the Officine Maccaferri SpA headquarters in Bologna, Italy. The project stems from a partnership be-tween the two major Italian multinationals, Maccaferri Industrial Group (through its companies, Offi-cine Maccaferri SpA and SAMP SpA) and RadiciGroup (through Radici Novacips SpA).The LIFE-Inno.Pro.Wire project sus-tainable challenge is to design an in-novative process with a lower environ-mental impact for producing extruded steel wire to be used in metal net protection and containment structures. Enthusiasm describes the kick-off meeting for LIFE-Inno.Pro.Wire, the Italian pilot project, which was awarded financial support by the European Commission’s LIFE+ programme, the European Union’s environment fund. The sustainability aspect of the LIFE-Inno.Pro.Wire project is the use of polyamide 6 (PA6 engineering plas-tics) as a viable alternative to PVC for coating the steel wire. Tests will be conducted not only on conventional PA6, but also on PA6.10 engineering

plastics produced using 64% biopoly-mer manufactured from sebacic acid.

The traditional process for producing extruded steel wire, in which steel wire is plated with a very thick zinc coating layer and then PVC coated, is energy

intensive. Hence, the idea put forth by Officine Maccaferri—world leader in the research, design and manufacture of advanced environmental civil engi-neering solutions—to develop a new and innovative production process in which the zinc coating process is minimized. Polyamide 6 plays a central role in this project, because compared to PVC, it ensures better technical and environmental performance. Benefits from this project range from develop-ment of a replicable methodology for the eco-sustainable production of steel wire coated with polymeric material us-ing new materials and new processes, to set-up of a demonstration production line to show savings in materials and energy by properly documenting pro-cess yield and product performance. The project will also contribute to the application of the experimental PEF methodology for the environmental evaluation of processes and products.

Ceresana publishes market study on LLDPE

According to the market research institute, Ceresana, linear low den-sity polyethylene (LLDPE) is the most versatile type of polyethylene. Large amounts of this plastic are used in producing films. Global revenues generated with LLDPE amounted to US$ 40.0 billion in 2013. A new study published by Ceresana ex-pects global market value of LLDPE to increase by about 3.9% by 2021.

The largest sales market is Asia-Pacific that consumed 11.3 million tons of LLDPE in 2013. An increase of another third of this amount is to occur in this region until 2021. Ceresa-na also forecasts high growth rates for the Middle East and South Amer-ica. The markets for LLDPE in North America and western Europe, will grow by only just above 1% per year. Yet growth prospects are still better than those for other types of polyethylene such as LDPE or HDPE.

The shale gas boom in the USA has a significant effect on ethylene production and thus markets for polyethylene. The strong decline of prices for ethane has led to a number of new ethane crackers being built. Cracking ethane yields a higher amount of ethylene than does the cracking of naphtha or other feedstocks. As a result of these projects, production capaci-ties for polyethylene is the USA are rising. Faced with increasing pricing pressure, several European pro-ducers have announced to either close their crackers or to change

Live demonstrations at the recent TeleNetfair show highlighted the optimum transmission characteristics of these cables up to 2 GHz, due not least to their advanced screening with paired and braided shielding (CA ≥85 dB).

• LEONI, Friesoythe, Germany, is focused on enhanced user-friendliness in the further development of its Cat. 6A Industrial Ethernet cable. This new ES version of LEONI’s star performer in terms of transfer rate is conse-quently just that—extremely easy to strip. Not only does this enhance user convenience, rapid assembly in the field also reduces installation time and thus provides an im-mediate financial benefit. And this ES version retains the ability to reliably transfer 10 Gbit/s and mechanical resistance to more than one million flex cycles—without any interfering pair shield foil. LEONI AG’s Cat. 6A cable is not only optimized for application in a drag chain with transfer rates of 10 Gbit/s at up to 500 MHz, it also does without any additional pair shield foils. This innovative feature makes it possible to easily fit, for example, RJ 45 and M12 x-coded connectors in the field, thereby saving time and money
