Beautiful Boland wedding

Port Elizabeth staff go bats in Bellingham & Smith factory

Pieter-Jan Hoon, trainee buyer for Outdoor Warehouse, wed his long-time girlfriend Annelie on 13 October in the beautiful town of Tulbagh, 120 km north-east of Cape Town. We wish PJ and Annelie all the best in their new life as a married couple.

It was a real hands-on experience when staff got to grips with B&S cricket bats on a recent educational visit. The bat they are holding is one they had actually made from scratch. Each of them made a component as Mick Bellingham personally took them through the renowned factory outside PE. They all had a brilliant time learning what goes into a great bat. With their renewed appreciation for B&S products, they will be excellent ambassadors for the brand.

Akasia 3-in-1 Road RaceEvents maestro Frikkie Bouwer and Anton Shields (Zambesi branch manager) worked hard to pull off this amazing branding activation at our water-point on Saturday 12 January. The start area was branded on the day before the race and, just a few hours later, (at 2 a.m.!) Frikkie and Anton were there, taking delivery of the tables, water and ice. This very successful event saw 6710 runners take part. There were over 1500 finishers in the 5 km fun run, just over 2200 in the 10 km race, and the marathon and half marathon saw 562 and 1382 athletes competing respectively.

The weather started out fine for all runners, but turned out to be very hot for the full marathon competitors as the temperature rose on their way back. The heat also contributed to the length of the queue at the physios’ tent.

Well done to all who assisted in staging this world-class display of Living the Brand.

Berg-en-Dal 15 km Nite RaceReflective wear was in abundance at this event. Just over 1300 athletes completed the Berg-en-Dal Nite race that took place in Krugersdorp on Wednesday 16 January. Frikkie, along with amazing staff from West Rand and Cresta, ran this watering-point. A big thank you to Westgate store.

Arwyp Kempton Park 15 km Nite RaceMany more runners enjoyed the night lights, this time in Kempton Park on Wednesday 23 January, with the name sponsor being the Arwyp Medical Centre. Our team from Modderfontein store hosted a much needed watering point at the Barnard Stadium. Valuable help was provided by staff from East Rand and Park Meadows.

Johnson Crane Marathon and Half-marathon, BenoniRace hosts, Benoni Harriers, prepared for a field of nearly 10 000 runners, including legends such as Bruce Fordyce and Frith van der Merwe. Last year’s winner, Elias Mabane, who will be 44 years old this year, was once again in the field.

This 42 km event serves as a qualifier for the Comrades Marathon, but also caters for those wanting to run shorter and more social distances, with a 21 km half-marathon, 10 km run and 5 km fun run also on offer. East Rand store was responsible for a watering-point, with awesome assistance from Frikkie, who always ensures that our branding flies high, wide and handsome.

Midmar Mile Swimming EventThe 40th Midmar Mile took place on the weekend of 9 and 10 February. We hosted pre-registration for all entrants at our Pietermaritzburg store, which resulted in great additional turnover. We also operated a small retail stall at the dam, which attracted additional sales and the likes of Olympic medallist Chad le Clos and his coach Ryk Neethling. The Midmar Mile is the world’s biggest open-water swimming event, with 18 000 participants over two days.

Thanks to Lee and his team from Pietermaritzburg for the superb execution of this event. Well done!
