ABOUT US: A Letter from Our CEO

3

The YMCA brings families and people of all ages together by encouraging good health and fostering connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. These life events end up turning meaningful connections into relationships and values that last a lifetime.

The YMCA currently offers Summer Day Camps, School’s Day Out, Before & After School programs, Art & Humanities programs, Youth Sports, Swim Lessons, and Youth & Adult Fitness programs. Now, more than ever, the YMCA plays an important role in our community. Thanks to the Springfield community’s support, we are able to provide two YMCA facilities with programs that will continue to focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. With your help and contribution, we will continue to

strengthen the foundations of YOUR community every day!

“The YMCA is more than a gym, we are family. Our mission is to be inclusive to make individuals and families feel welcome regardless of financial or physical limitations.”

At the YMCA of Springfield, we believe youth need positive role models. The Y puts caring people in children’s lives and nurtures them along their journey to adulthood so they can become active, thriving, and contributing members of society.

FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

4

Youth Sports YMCA youth sports encourage and promote individual development, positive self-image and mutual respect for others. The YMCA of Springfield provides both recreational and competitive sports. A priority on family involvement and healthy competition makes youth sports a winner for everyone.

Child Care The YMCA of Springfield offers before and after school programs to children in surrounding area schools. The

philosophy of the YMCA’s School Age Care Program is to promote learning through play and recreation. In 2019 we

provided school-aged care for 282 children.

Summer Camp Camp Wa-Kon-Tah is a place where kids have the

opportunity to explore nature, try exciting activities, gain confidence, and make lasting friendships and memories.

Camp Wa-Kon-Tah covers 26 acres on beautiful Lake Springfield. Last year 1,986 children participated in our

summer camps at the YMCA.

FOR HEALTHY LIVINGFOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENTImproving our community’s health and well-being is one of our main focuses here at the Y. We encourage healthy living with programs that are designed to build overall wellness for members of all ages.

55

Wellness for Seniors The YMCA of Springfield offers a variety of programs designed for older adults. These

programs help maintain a healthier lifestyle, strengthen social ties, and promote a positive

outlook on life. Low-impact exercise, chair classes, Strive Fit Seniors and water fitness are just a few classes that are offered. Living healthy is about

spirit, mind and body at every age.

Group Exercise The YMCA of Springfield’s certified

personal trainers and group exercise instructors provide members with over 168 class options per week across the

association. These classes empower people to maintain or improve physical fitness, health and wellness. They also

offer an opportunity to create new connections and friendships.

Adult SportsSports, fun and exploring new interests are not just for the young. That is why you will find a range of recreational activities at the YMCA including badminton, pickleball, racquetball, and martial arts. We have something to offer everyone. You are never too old to get in the game!

Giving back and providing support to our neighbors is at the heart of our mission. The YMCA of Springfield is always looking for new ways to serve and invest in our community.

6

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYGiving back and providing support to our neighbors is at the heart of our mission. The YMCA of Springfield is always looking for new ways to serve and invest in our community.

Matthew Kids For the last 5 years, we have partnered with The Matthew Project. They provide clothing, food, tutoring, mentoring and life skills classes to Springfield School District 186 children in transitional housing. The YMCA provides Matthew Project kids with a summer experience which includes transportation to and from camp, breakfast, lunch, tutoring and swimming lessons. In 2020 we look forward to hosting up to 50 Matthew kids per week.

Saturday Strikers BowlingThe Saturday Strikers bowling program is designed for

persons with disabilities. It provides physical exercise, team building, self-confidence, and a path out of

isolation. In 2019 we sent 69 individuals to compete in Special Olympics bowling. You see the true impact of this

program when adults, youth, parents, YMCA staff, and volunteers are cheering and supporting each other.

SNAP The YMCA Special Needs Aquatic Program (SNAP) has

been in existence for 18 years. The primary focus is to provide swimming lessons to individuals with mental

or physical disabilities. The goal is to give people with special needs the opportunity to learn how to swim

at their own pace. Many of these swimmers go on to compete in Special Olympics. In 2019, we sent 9 SNAP

swimmers to Special Olympics.

In 2018, the YMCA of Springfield embarked on a capital campaign with a goal to raise $35 million for a new downtown facility. This facility will continue to serve the needs of our community by providing programs and spaces for everyone. The new building, at the corner of Fourth and Carpenter Streets, will open at the end of 2020. Thank you to the following businesses and individuals who have helped make this dream a reality.
