DEDICATED TO:
Montine W . Prather, my wife, for her help in proof reading the
manuscripts for each Volume.
John W. Prather, III, our son for the joy he has brought to the life of
his Mother and me.

There have been so many people who have shared informa-
tion with me that it is not possible to list them all here. I have corre-
sponded with over 700 persons about the family. I do wish to express
my sincere thanks to all, and assure you that it has been a pleasure to
get to know you, if only by telephone conversations and
correspondence. I very much enjoyed discussing the
PRATER/PRATHER family with the ones who have called. Many
have stopped by and visited with me, this was a very pleasant
experience and it is amazing in how many faces I could see
PRATHER features found in my family's faces.
Since I started doing research for the family in 1976 a num-
ber of persons researching the family, some with whom I corre-
sponded and who share information about the family with me, have
died. Some are listed in Volume II and those who have died since
then are :
Mrs Thelma M. Holden, North Little Rock, AR
Mrs. Robert E. Lentz, FIoyds Knobs, IN
R.F. McCoy, Austin, TX
Mrs. Ralph Perrin, Charlotte, NC
Mrs. Geraldine Prater, Birmingham, AL
John W. E. Prather, Mt. Airy, NC
Roy Prather, Little Rock, AR
Maj. Gen, Richard Prather, Baltimore, MD
Mrs. Kelda V. Thompson, Tallmadge, OH
Mrs. James A. Watson, Shreveport, LA
William M. Prather, Rossville, IL
I must acknowledge the work done by two persons whom I
was not privileged to know and correspond with. Much of their in-
formation was made available to me by persons who did know and
correspond with them. I found their work very helpful. They are:
Ephraim Stout Lillard, Washington, DC -- 15 Oct. 1965
Miss. Eva Hampton Prather, Brookhaven, GA -- 1 Nov. 1064

PREFACE 1
I still find it hard to acknowledge that a genealogy is never complete. But have learned to accept there will always be others records
found that will add to, and sometimes change, the information we have
worked so hard to compile as correct and as complete as we can.
There are so many duplications of names that without an Identity Code System it would be nearly impossible to keep member of the family
separated. I have designed a system that I think will make it easier to keep
them separated and I recommend you review this system as it is presented in Chapter 8 of Volume II before you start reading the book.
I have reached the time I must use the information I have and
prepare the manuscript for this Volume for publication. I have spent four years organizing information for, and preparing, the manuscript. I have
made every effort to be as accurate and complete as I can. With all my
efforts there is the possibility errors will creep in. When you find them, will
you please bring them to my attention? Where you have a record or document that proves the error, will you please share a copy of the record
or document with me so I may include the correction in a future volume?
A complete list of all records I have found is in the Bibliography. This will save time for future researchers as they work to add to the
information we have. I encourage all who do further research to publish the
information they find.
In preparing the manuscript for this Volume I have used the spelling of names as they appear in records or documents. During the
earlier days covered by this Volume it was not unusual for both Christian
and surnames to be found with different spellings. For one of my ancestors, in the early 1800's, his surname was spelled three ways in the same
document.
In this Volume I have included some probable family members for whom the information is far from complete and have indicated we do not
have proof they are part of the family. I am sure there will be those who
will believe they should not have been included. I have included them
because others have worked hard and have kept records of their efforts. This information should be useful to others who in the future wish to
continue serious research for
these individuals and may help them prove where they belong in the family. I am a great believer that the more information for a problem the
better chance one has finding the correct answer. Good luck to those of
you who work on these problems and if you find an answer please
share it with others and have it published somewhere or it will be
lost again.
Near the end of this Volume in Chapter (?), Documentation, I
have included Administrations, Bible Records, Court Proceedings,
iii
1 This draft PREFACE was created originally in anticipation of completing Volume
III, so some parts are incomplete.
Prater, Prather, Prator, Praytor in America John W. Prather, Jr.

have included Manuscripts, References and Bound Volumes.
I have assigned Symbols similar to (A.O), (R.O), (C.O),
(D.O), etc. to each item listed in Chapter (?), Documentation, and in
Chapter (?), Bibliography, I have assigned (M.O), (R.O) and (BV.O).
Where these numbers are found in chapters of this book you should
refer to Chapters (?) and (?). An early review of these chapters will
be helpful when you read this the book.
Ephraim Stout Lillard, (1), (1894-1965) lived in Washing
ton, D. C. and worked on the PRATER/PRATHER family genealogy
from about 1909 to just before his death. Ephraim planned to publish
a PRATER/PRATHER family history and genealogy, unfortunately
he died before he published his book. His records are still in
existence but are not available to researchers.
It was not my pleasure to know and correspond with
Ephraim. I do know many who did know and correspond with him
and they have been kind enough to share with me copies of corre-
spondence they received from him as well as copies of correspon-
dence he sent to others.
Following the information in Ephraim's correspondence I
have been able to acquire copies of many of the documents and re-
cords he mentioned. Ephraim stated he had copies of Bible Records,
Cemetery Records, etc. that I have not been able to find. It may now
be that the only copies of these documents are the ones in his re-
cords. I continue to hope that someday his records will be available
for research and someone will add the information to our family re-
cords.
When I say something is probably true, it means I have cir-
cumstantial evidence it is true, but do not have specific documenta-
tion. Therefore I can not guarantee it is true.
It is my wish that each person who acquires a copy of this
book has as much joy reading and suing it as I have had in compiling
it.

The following are Symbols I have used through the book.
These Symbols are designed to permit quick reference to detailed in-
formation and eliminate having to type this information many times
in the book. I believe this will improve accuracy and reduce the size
of the book.

This addendum is prepared to correct errors found in Vol-
ume I and Volume II, since publication. Credit will be given to the
person who wrote me and gave me the information to make the cor-
rection. Also additional information for some families, which I did
not have at time of publication, has been sent to me and that is in-
cluded in Volume III, with credit. If credit is not given the error and/
or additional information was found by the compiler.

Jean W. Young (23) and Jeannine Burger question whether
her son WILLIAM was an Administrator of her estate because
of his age. A close reading and study of (L.65) will make clear
heir reasons. Information I have says that WILLIAM was b.
ca. 1777 and this works well with the birth dates of his
siblings birth, all of which are estimated. In a deed dated 29
Aug. 1812 it is said that WILLIAM died before he arrived to
full or mature age. WILLIAM PHILLIPS and THOMAS
WILLIAMS Administrators of ANNE's estate made bond 7
Aug, 1797. The WILLIAM PHILLIPS who was Administrator
was dead when THOMAS WILLIAMS, surviving
Administrator, made an accounting of his Administration in
Dec. 1799. This makes it doubtful that her son WILLIAM was
one of ANNE's Administrators. (L.65) . Others should be on
the watch for any information that bears on this
problem.(JWP, Jr.)

John Hunt Prather, of Philip, born 1735, married Eleanor Turner.
However, they were in North Carolina in 1753, so perhaps they
married there (L.71). The earliest record I have for John Hunt
in North Carolina is when he bought land, in Rowan

County, N.C., from Edward Turner and wife, 13 July 1763
(D.93) (C.42). In 1763 John Hunt was 28 years old. In 1753 he
would have been 18 years old and I doubt he would have been
married and in North Carolina buying land. John Hunt's father
Philip Prather, Sr. (3.029.04) and his family moved to North
Carolina after 2 Sep. 1756 and the first record for him was in
the oldest court records of Orange County, N.C. in 1761. He
was in Orange County, N.C.as late as 1765 when he served on
a jury with Jesse Brashear - Vol. II p. 37 - (L.19, See Vol. II
pages 371-372). I believe that John Hunt may have moved to
North Carolina with his father in 1756 when he was 21 years
old and may have been married at that time. This brings in to
question the date of his marriage. (JWP.Jr.)

(Some information provided to Jean Young by others is, in my opin-
ion, incorrect. This information says that Frances and John had a son
named James Phillips who was b. ca. 1782. My records show Fran-
ces was b. ca 1770 and this is consistent with the dates of birth of
her siblings. John was probably b. ca. 1769 by some information.
Frances would have been 12 years old and John would have been
thirteen years old when James was born. Therefore, in my opinion,
they could not have been his patents. I believe that Frances and John
m. ca. 1790. I have not included James herein. JWP.Jr.) --- above

NOTES ON THIS DOCUMENT
In April of 2007 John decided to distribute this Volume I and II
Addendum and asked me to help. My mission is assisting John by
recreating this Addendum in a form for electronic distribution to
interested researchers. The chosen format is Adobe Acrobat Reader
PDF. Since he was not able to provide me with a computer file, this
is accomplished by scanning his hardcopy pages using OCR (optical
character recognition) to make searchable pages, creating and
inserting an index, and making the document available as read-only.
The last thing we need is edited, home-brew versions wandering the
internet.
As of 18 June 2007, John is gathering his remaining manuscripts to
send them to the Special Collections section of the Maryland State
Archives, since he is not able to work on them any longer. He
estimates that Volume III (of which this is the “shell”) is about 60%
complete. The ID of the collection is as follows and in the future
will include the current works:
