Whetheryouareahighpoweredexecutive, manager, entrepreneur,or president of a volunteerorganization, your success will bedefined by two things: 1) Lettingpeople know they matter and : 2)Setting clear expectations for themto follow. If you don’t have both ofthese principles in place beforeyour employees/volunteers starta project, I can guarantee you thatyou’ll soon hit a brick wall called‘LackofCommunication’.

IF YOU WANT SOMEONE TO FOLLOW YOU,

YOU HAVE TO GIVE GOOD DIRECTIONS

As a business owner you need to be sure you are guiding your team in the right direction, and supporting and encouraging them

youensuretheteamwork, productivity, and positive end results you needtocreatesuccess inyourbusiness.

1. You have to get real clearabout where you’re going andwhatyouwantthefinaloutcome

to be before you ever present it toyour team. If you’re not sure aboutwhere you are going, do you thinkthey are going to follow you? Idon’t think so Alice! Get the “W’s”downpatbeforehand–Whowilldo

You, as the person in charge, know what you want, but it’s up to you to clearly define your expectations to your teamfrom day one

what, when, and where and howitwill all come together at the end.

2.Meetwithyourteamtodiscussyour proposed new plan andtell them how it is going to

work. Have a detailed agenda inplace so as not towaste your timeor theirs. Schedulingmeetingswithyour key players creates a synergyandallowsthemtofreelyofferideasand possibilities that you mightvery well not have thought of in

your original concept. (There’s thatword ‘communication’ explained.)

3.Besuretosetclearguidelinesforwhoisresponsiblefordoingwhat and when you expect

it to be finished. Make sure thatteammembersareclearabouttheirroles so you won’t hear ‘I thoughtMarywas takingcareof that’whensomething doesn’t get finished.

4. Be sure you have a verbalcommitment from your teamthat they’re on board for

the project. Schedule follow-upmeetings and weekly check-insto keep the project on deadline. And speaking of deadlines - bespecific about the date you expectto have everything completed by.

5.Lastly,offeryoursupportandthen get out of the way andlet themdo theirstuff.Noone

likes to be micro-managed or feelas if their leader is breathing downtheir neck all the time! Words ofencouragement go a long way tofostering good personal relationsand they go down a heck of a loteasier thanwords of condemnationdo. Remember, success is buildingrelationships, nottearingthemdown. All of the great leaders of our timehad a clearly defined plan. Spiritual REVELATIONS in the BUSINESS world

Success in business is not just a matter of hard work – although this is important. Dr Stan Jeffery (pictured left) teaches business owners and corporates how to recognize the spiritual elements that surround our working lives…Lynn Goldsmith

When talking with Dr StanJeffery you feel you areentering into a different

dimension–not that it’sadifficultsituation – but it’s just different…Stan’smindthinksbigandhethinksmulti-dimensional. He teachesbusinesspeopletounderstandthespiritual realm in which they areworkingandtofightthegoodfightoffaithtosucceedsotheycanbeinfluential within governments, community, families–infacteverysphereoflife.

I asked Stan to explain howhe does this and what methodsheuses to inspireandencourageChristianbusinesspeopletomoveforwardintotheirdestiny.

What has been your training in the area of business and finance?Istartedoff in theUKdoingworkinElectronicsandComputing.MyfirstdegreeisaBScinElectronics.I worked for ICL Computers intheUK in hardware and softwaredevelopment systems and then IdidanMBA inMonashUniversityin Victoria working with Telstra, which is business financefocussed. When I later moved toBallaratIcompletedmyDoctorateinTechnologyintheareaofstart-up businesses and investing andlooking at strategies for businessgrowth, togetherwithinvestments. What led you into this area of finance and business?

I worked in the technology areaand I could see there was agreat need for the funding to belinked with the early stage ofbusinesses. When I went to theAustralian Technology Park inEveleigh (Redfern in Sydney) – Ihad an incubator program to setupstart-upbusinesses–andIhadtrainingprograms,butIdidn’thaveany venture funds. So the startup company spent so much timelooking for investments that theyfound itdifficult togetonwith thecompanydevelopment.

I had an opportunity to set upa venture fund inMalaysiawhereI had $200 Million to invest, andthat was an excellent opportunityto take the incubator programand the investment and put themtogether.ThenIhadanopportunityto be director of theUniversity ofBallarat Technology Park where Ihad the incubator program whichistheearlystagethengrowthintothe main technology park, whichis the later stage together with aventurefund, whichcouldlinkthemaltogether. So, I havebeen tryingto link ideasand investments inaway thatpeopledon’tseem tobeabletodo.

How is it important for God’s people to conduct business according to His ways and laws?

Body of Christ so we can have anewphaseofChristiansinbusinessgrowing from other Christianinvestorsandnotjust lookingtotheworld forourresources, but lookingtoGodwithinourcompaniesforourresources.

Is it part of that Scripture – “The wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just?” Are you moving towards that and getting Christian business people to see that God is transferring wealth? That’san importantpoint.Yes,Godhasbeenrevealingtomethatwearegoingtobeinvolvedinthefinalwealthtransfer. We believe it’s happeningalready.Weseeopportunitiesintheworld that are not seen by othersthatwecantakeadvantageof.Thisiswhereaword fromGod iswortha fortune because He can tell youwhat’sgoing tohappen. ThereareafewsignificantScripturesthattalkaboutwealth transferandpeople inthe Body getting words from Godaboutthefuture.SeeJohn1612-15forexample.

If we get a word from God andacton it thenwearegoing tohaveacompetitiveadvantage, particularlyin these economic times wherethe world markets are going up ordowndependingonwhatdayyou’relookingat.

I think if we can get our peopleto move in that direction, get themto understand that God is reallytryingtoblessthem–Heisactuallytryingtoblessusmorethanwearewantingtobeblessed.Wejustneedto be in a position to be honouringHim,trustworthy, giveGodtheglory, weneedtostoptryingtotakecreditfor ourselves, and if we honourandworshipHim then I believe theworld’stransferwillcometous.

How important is it to get the strategies from God as against what the world would give us? I think God expects us to use thegifts and talents He has given us.

I thinkwe have this combination ofdoing the bestwe can in theworldand add His guidance to this. Godgaveusanalyticaltools,Hegaveusthe banking system, He has givenuseverythingandwecanuseGod’swisdom to our benefit. What wecando is ifweareable to use thetools we have to look for the bestopportunities, some of the world’sways–you’vegottolookforagoodteam, lookforagoodproduct, goodmarketplace, and good politicalenvironmentandthenaddpropheticinsight to finalise the God guidedopportunity.

We have to stand out as business people and show the world we are doing it God’s way? WhenwearedoingitGod’swaywewillstandout.CertainlyHeiswantingtogettheglory.He’snotdoingitforour benefit; He’s doing it to extendHisgloryovertheworld. That’soneof the reasons we are here. We’renotinthedirectevangelisticspace,we’reinthebodybuildingspace.So,wewanttobuildtheBodyofChristinawaythatcangiveglorytoGodandattractpeopleintoHiskingdom.

You are teaching business people to get all that God has for us - all that is stored in other dimensions - that you wrote about in your latest book - to bring into our lives here on earth? The business dimension isinteresting. We can speak intothe spirit world butwe can’t see atthis stage. How does this benefitbusiness? In many different ways! The wisdom of the ages is drawnthroughthisdimensionsoitismorethan just a product – the ideascomefromthisrealmaswell.Everycreative idea on earth came fromGod,whetheritcomestoChristiansornon-Christians.

How can business people pull out of other dimensions what is needed, into their dimension on earth? What they have to do is recognise

the power of their words. Wordsmakeadifference.Ourenvironmentis created by the words that wespeak. Even in business. We cansay, “We are a business that isgoing to succeed. We are going todrawonsomanycustomers, wearegoing to finishaproduct,”whateveritmaybe.ThepowerofourwordsiscreativebecauseourfatherandtheCreator created the universe fromHis words. We have to recognisewe are not just flapping our lipsaroundinourmouths, thewordsthatcomeoutofourmouths, gointoourears, andourspirithearsthewordswe say. When we say a negativething about ourselves we actuallydamageourselves.Whenwespeakpositive things the angels go towork.Unfortunatelywedon’talwaysrecognisealltheseaspects.

You’ll see the differences inbusinesses where people speakpositive things and they have apositive result,whetherChristianornon-Christian.Wehavetospeakoutto succeed and of course take theappropriateactions–wehavetobecredible and honourable. Howeveras Christians we have a specialrelationship with God through HissonJesus

How important is it that Christians in business influence the world? Thereasonweareblessedissowecan be an influence forGod’s planwearenotblessedwithwealthjusttohaveexcesshowevergoodandnicethings are part of the blessing. So,wehavetobethepeoplewhoguidethe decisions in the country. Thegovernmentandsocietyisinfluencedbypeoplewhoareblessed.Weneedtotakecontrolofwealthanduseittoournation’sbenefitandthisisdoneby us receiving all that ourCreatorhas to give us - using this to showGod’spowerandglory to the fallenworld.

“A must-read book for any business owner, entrepreneur, leader… or in fact anybody living in today’s modern, hectic world. Peter is my own modern day Solomon - an abundance of wisdom of how to live and prosper. Read , enjoy and let this wisdom transform you!”

Tony Gattari, Achievers Group

Through practical advice and inspirational examples, this book will help you grow your business and brand to heights you may never have thought possible. But the man who helped steer the phenomenal growth of Gloria Jean’s Coffees in Australia warns that success is not just about being the best and making the most profit. It’s also about taking the people around you--your family, staff, customers and community--on the journey with you.

Peter Irvine integrates deep life truths with personally-proven business principles to enrich your business, your people and your life. Peter unravels the myth that business and family don’t mix. He challenges you to a more rewarding life by involving your family in your business and vice versa.

Sally started in business withhermother. In fact she startedwellbefore that when she was about12 and she always had a job. their investments and increase thetitheforourGod’suse.Funding issue 1 - getting startedOnce a budding entrepreneur hasdecided what area the businesswill be in the second big questionand the one to which needs to beanswered, is ‘howareyougoing topayfor this?’This isespeciallyvitalto those who are dependent uponthe entrepreneur such as partnersandchildrenandthosewithaspecialsenseof concern likeparents.Thiscanoftenbe thepointatwhich theentrepreneur fails to take upGod’scalling, fails to achieve God’s bestforthemandfailstofulfila life-longdream. As Proverbs 13:12 tells us,‘Hopedeferredmakestheheartsick,(NRSV)orasThe Message describesit, ‘Unrelenting disappointmentleavesyouheartsick.’

There are two very simplisticanswerstothesequestions.Thefirstisthat if it isGod’splanHewillpayfor itwhile if it is yourplanyouwillpayforit.Thesecondansweristheone that partners and parents willreceiveandtheanswerinthatcaseis that it is probably YOU (parentsand partners). While these are inmany cases the right answer, theyareasalreadystatedsimplistic.Thatis - that ifweareexpectingGod tofundaprojectwemaywellsitroundforever waiting for the cheque toarriveifwedonotactivelyseekoutthefundsHewantsustohave.Whileif it is the partners or parents whodo the funding it is quite possiblefor both to lose everything if theprocessofdeveloping thebusinessisapproachedinthewrongway.

Funding for the developmentof anewbusiness takesplace inanumberofwaysandinanumberofstages. Each must be approachedin the correct way, with therequired documentation and legalagreementsinplace.Fromtheveryearliest stage even when dealingwith family and friends, it is vitalto ensure that everyone involvedknowsclearlywhatisexpected. This

should be in the form of a writtendocument, preferably checked bysomeone with a legal backgroundand should include such things asgoals, share of expected returns, when the returnswill be distributedand reporting. It should also statetheamountinvestedandtheamountof equity this represents. It is acommonexperienceamongstart-upcompaniesforfailuretooccurwhenthecompanystartstomakemoney.Whenthereisnolongeracashflowproblem, founding partners start todisagree.

Where does funding come from? There are three ways in whichfunding of a new business venturecantakeplace.Theyare:

Self-funded—the entrepreneurusesfundsthatareavailablefromapersonalsourcesuchassavingsora termination payment. There maybe additional funds from a workingpartner.

Equity—is a way of funding anewventurefromfundsdedicatedtofundingnewbusinesses.Thefunderrequires ownership of an agreedproportion of the company and inexchange for this is rewarded withreturnsfromtheprofitsinproportionto the equity in the company. Thefunderalsosharesintheriskastheinvestment is lost if the companyfails.

The choice of funding source islargelyapersonaloneandonethatis affected by circumstances andpersonal beliefs. Some Christiansbelieve that it isnot right togo intodebt while others prefer not to butsee no other way out. Each mustmake their own choice but a wisepersonlistenstotheadviceofothersespecially when venturing into newareas.

Excellent event“Just want to say that I thought that the conference was extremely professional in every way. I have been to a number of business conferences and this one was right up there. There is little I could say that you could improve; to be honest I cannot think of anything. I would like to sincerely thank Business Edge for effort taken with the organisation of this conference; Business Edge truly does have the potential to change the world. Be encouraged, God is doing great things through Business Edge,”
