Browse the catalogue, select the colour

There are four basic body colours to choose from.

We then add variations of darker and lighter

shades to create a wider choice. N.B. bricks are

made from natural materials so colours will vary

slightly from batch to batch.

Commonly has soft edges, always a frogged

body (indent in the top of the brick).

Waterstruck

Often a solid brick, although a few

products are made frogged. Commonly

a lip is evident at the bottom of the face.

Wirecut

Precise edges are formed within the

manufacturing process although

a softer edge can be achieved by

rumbling. Holes through the body

of the brick are an easy way of

identifying if the brick is a wirecut.

They can also be a solid brick.

Help you get the most from your project with an illustrated guide to mortar joints and brickwork bonds.

Make the right start for a great finish...

The quality of workmanship on site can have an overriding effect on the weather resistance of the brickwork.

• Bricks should be laid on a full bed of mortar• All cross joints and collar joints should be fully filled• Immediately after the brick is laid, excess mortar should be

struck off the external face of the work and off the internal faces of the leaves of cavity walls

• Care should be taken to ensure that mortar is not scraped onto the exposed face of the brick

Quality of Workmanship

Note: Recessed joints should not be used where there is a danger of excessive wetting.

Mortar Joint ProfilesOne of the factors that influence the long term performance of brickwork is the correct mortar joint profile for efficient shedding of rainwater.

Brickwork that remains saturated is more susceptible to frost damage. The choice of joint profile should therefore be based on performance criteria, as well as aesthetic considerations.

The most commonly used joint profiles

Curved Recessed (Bucket Handle)This joint gives an improved appearance over a flush joint, with little reduction in its strength. Owing to the compressing of the joint and the superior bond, it has good weather resistance and is suitable for all grades of exposure.

FlushThis gives maximum bearing area and is often favoured when coarse textured bricks are used. With some brick types the finish may appear a little irregular. Suitable for moderate and sheltered exposures as the mortar joint has not been compressed by the finishing tool.

Weather StruckThis produces a contrasting effect of light and shade on the brickwork. Such joints, when correctly formed, have excellent strength and weather resistance and are suitable for all grades of exposure.

Squared Recessed (Raked)This can produce interesting articulated joints, but weather resistance and strength will be considerably less than with other joints. Use only with frost resistant bricks in sheltered exposure conditions. The recess should not exceed 3-4mm and is not recommended with full fill cavity insulation.

Bonding in brickwork refers to the pattern in which they are laid. They usually overlap between courses in order to distribute load and provide stability. Bonding can also be used for decorative purposes.

MortarThe mortar should be correctly proportioned and thoroughly mixed. Nothing but clean water should be added later and mortar should not be ‘knocked up’ (re-mixed) after it has started to set.

ProtectionAll walls must be covered when work stops. Rain on new work can cause:

Efflorescence is visible as a harmless deposit of water soluble material on the surface of brickwork consisting of naturally occurring salts from within either the clay or the mortar.

Efflorescence commonly occurs in spring, following wet winter working conditions, when a building dries out for the first time. As moisture rises to the surface of the brickwork to evaporate in temperate weather, the soluble material is also carried along and left at the face where it will then weather away.

To minimise the occurrence of efflorescence:

• Bricks should be stacked onto a clean, firm, level surface and protected from rain, mud splashes, etc.

• Newly erected masonry should be covered to protect cavities and stop masonry becoming saturated.

• Incorporate the appropriate DPC’s, copings and sills at the design stage.

The reference panel should be built before facework begins to confirm design features, to establish standards of workmanship and establish the visual acceptability of the chosen bricks. The panel should include the bond selected for the finished work, the correct mortar mix and joint profile.

The reference panel should be:

• Erected on a level firm foundation

• In a position having good natural daylight

• Sited so that it can be retained for further inspection and protected from damage and the weather

• Approximately 1m²

One of the main purposes of setting out brickwork is to create a matching and balanced appearance of bricks, particularly at reveals on either side of door and window openings and end of walls. In this ‘Get it Right’ only stretcher bond, also known as half bond, is considered, although the basic principles will apply whatever bond it used.

Get it right Setting-out brickwork

Brickwork should be set-out before the bricklaying begins using as a unit dimension the co-ordinating size of the brick, i.e. one brick length plus one nominal 10mm mortar joint. The mortar joint acts as the buffer zone and will be adjusted to suit the brick size. However, for 215mm bricks the co-ordinating size is said to be 225mm.

DO NOT set-out using the average actual size of the bricks as first obtained.

Number Co-ordinating of Bricks Size

Wasteful cutting can be avoided and brickwork appearance enhanced if the overall lengths and heights of walls and door and window openings are all multiples of the brick unit + 10mm joint size.

The following table showing horizontal brickwork dimensions will assist in achieving this objective. A more extensive table can be found on our website.

For example, if a span of brickwork is required to encompass 4 whole bricks between 2 openings, a mortar joint is not needed at either end, therefore the co-ordinating size measurement is 900mm (4 brick lengths plus 4 x10mm mortar joint – refer to dimensions tables if required). Remove one 10mm joint, the span would then be set out to 890mm.

The bricks should be spaced out to fit the co-ordinating space therefore the mortar joints will be adjusted accordingly.

BS EN 771-1 requires that the dimensions of a clay masonry unit shall be declared by the manufacturer and also which tolerance category the mean values fulfil. (Information on brick tolerances can be found in our product Portfolio and on our website).It is important to understand that bricks complying with the Standard have varying shape characteristics depending on the method of manufacture. When using different products in the same wall, i.e. wirecut products at ground level changing to stock bricks higher up, the chances are they will be classified to different tolerances.

If the guidelines on setting out are followed this should not cause any problem, however if a rigidly measured 10mm mortar joint is used there will be inevitable problems with perpends running out of plumb.

Before laying, blend units from each product type so that the overall appearance of the finished work is uniform and without patches or bands of colour. This will also help to blend any variations in size.

This is the introduction of cut bricks into a length of wall which, if properly considered, will maintain satisfactory appearance and achieve a minimum quarter bond. Where short lengths of brickwork are not full brick or half brick dimensions, broken bond is inevitable.

Result – overhang at end of course.

This is where the end bricks in a given course are showing a stretcher face at one end of the panel and a header face at the other. It can also apply at either side of an opening containing a half brick size dimension in its width and where broken bond and brick cutting may be considered unacceptable. It is unlikely to be acceptable if reveal bricks of a contrasting colour are used as a decorative feature.

Stepped plinth courses at the base of a wall will increase the wall length externally and may result in a non co-ordinating dimension. The setting out dimension should therefore be the brickwork above the plinth courses so that any cutting to accommodate the increased length is in the plinth and lower courses only.

Perpends are the positions of vertical joints between the bricks (not the vertical joints themselves). Their location should be decided at ground level. The verticality of perpends is visually important and the plumbing of every fourth or fifth and the ‘eyeing out’ in between will produce satisfactory results.

The same perpend in each course must be plumbed and suitably marked.

These are the sides of window and door openings and the position of the reveal brick should be identified when setting out the first few courses. This ensures unbroken perpends for the full height of the wall.

Special thought must be given to fixing a line and pins when placing a course of copings or cappings. It is good practice to consider the most obvious ‘sight line’ or side most likely to be seen. As the bricks will vary in size the favoured edge or arris of the course being laid will be the ‘trued up’ edge. Where copings or capping are to be viewed from both sides, some selection of units to a common size will be necessary.

Walls which include angle bricks should be set out to the face side as with any facework. The use of squints will maintain half bond.

Longer angle bricks (often referred to as dog-legs) will also maintain half-bond but the shorter ones will involve some cutting of the standard brick to maintain bond.

Kimcote Hall, a new family farmhouse, utilises a blend of Swanage handmade facing bricks laid in a Flemish bond with a strong plinth detail firmly grounding the building. Stone coursing and detailing including corbels and parapets are utilised.

The external appearance of the dwelling is finished off with highly detailed chimneys incorporating stone banding and brick, giving the external appearance a varied interesting profile.

The Orangery, Reading, BerkshireThe Orangery at Cane End, Reading is a beautiful example of using new bricks to blend in with much older brickwork whilst introducing traditional-type features such as detailed dentil brickwork and semi-circular arches over deep feature windows.

The brick blend was selected to match existing walls and barns. The front elevation is formed of a one-brick thick external cavity in Flemish bond overlooking the pool. Particular attention was paid to arching and corbel specials in the cornice to re-emphasise the arched openings.

All specials and elevations were evaluated by the Ibstock design service, including all copings and corner bricks. Rebated specials form subtle panelling effects on the columns between arches, breaking down the scale and adding relief.

bricks, usually seen at eaves level or as a

string course. In today’s brick aesthetics, dentil

courses offer a decorative opportunity which

bricks have excellent sustainability credentials - having a low energy input, very low waste and are readily

Choose Clay PaversThey are simple to cut and have five possible

decorative wear faces, unlike concrete, which

has just one! This means that edges, corners,

kerbs and steps can all be formed from the

paver you choose without the need or cost of

specially shaped units.

Compared with most imported slate or stone sets and slabs our pavers are produced

in the UK from responsibly sourced and naturally abundant materials. They are

manufactured in modern safe working conditions and the environmental impact is

minimised as Ibstock pavers typically travel less than 60 miles from where there are made

to where they are used.

The colours are formed throughout the paver as a result of firing

natural clays at around 1000° C. Typically, concrete pavers use

surface colours and tints which often wear, fade and chip to reveal

the grey aggregates and substrate beneath. In addition, the effects

of water and sunlight on the surface of our clay pavers actually

enhances their appearance and helps maintain a clean surface.

This is due to the ceramic nature of the surface and it is this

property that ensures clay pavers have excellent resistance to

staining or erosion from weak alkalis and acids such as detergents

used in car washing and acid rain. Prolonged exposure can cause

concrete alternatives to fade.

Rigid pavers these are usually laid on a concrete sub-base, then bedded and jointed with mortar. They measure 215mm (length) x 102mm (width) x 50mm (height).

Sustainable Drainage System (SUDS) pavers are laid on a suitable permeable aggregate sub-base. They measure 200mm (length) x 100mm (width) x 65mm (height) including the width of the spacers.

Flexible pavers are bedded on sand. These measure 200mm (length) x 100mm (width) x 65mm (height).

Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS)Since October 2008, the use of SUDS surface finishes is a legal requirement for many

driveways joining the public highway. Therefore, any new surface should incorporate a

water permeable layer to minimise excess run-off during heavy rain. To fit impermeable

surfaces, above a certain area, requires the submission of a planning application, a fee

and associated delays.

We have introduced the only clay stock brick pavers that are SUDS compliant and that can also be used for water harvesting systems.

This means that you can enjoy the lasting beauty of clay

pavers anywhere around your home.
