HOT SHOTS INTERSCHOOL TENNIS CARNIVAL

On Tuesday, 72 Year 3 and 4 students participated in the Hot Shots Interschool Tennis Carnival at Robertson Park Tennis Centre on Fitzgerald Street. They competed against students from local public primary schools in this event coordinated by the Tennis Centre and supported by Tennis Australia. Students from the John Forrest Senior High School (JFSHS) Specialist Tennis Program assisted with umpiring and scoring.

This event required a lot of personnel and would not have been possible without the assistance of the JFSHS students and the supervision and umpiring support provided by many of our parents.

Thank you to everyone involved in making this event possible.

VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS Each year the school requests a contribution from parents to supplement the funding gained from other sources, including the State and Commonwealth Governments. The $60.00 contribution requested has been endorsed by the School Board and adheres to the Department of Education’s ‘Contributions, Charges and Fees Manual’, October 2017. We appreciate it when parents decide to make the contribution. In 2018 the voluntary contribution was an opportunity to increase our revenue by $28 140. We collected $24 300, a shortfall of $3 840, to support our teaching and learning programs.

We are now seeking Voluntary Contributions for 2019. If you have not already paid, either directly to the school or through Campion with the 2019 Personal Items List, please consider paying the contribution of $60.00 per child to the school office as soon as possible. If you are unsure if you have already paid, please contact the school office.

We are able to accept cash and cheques made payable to North Perth Primary School. We also have credit card and EFTPOS facilities available at reception.

Thank you for your continuing support of our school.

LET’S TAKE A STAND TOGETHER

We believe every child has the right to be safe at school. We provide learning environments that foster good behaviour and respect for your children and those around them.

Fortunately, most students attending public schools in Western Australia are able to learn in safe and supportive environments. At times, though, some students can be physically aggressive. This is never acceptable as it can cause psychological and physical harm to those involved, as well as disruption to teaching and learning.

The State Government has released a Statement to address violence in schools. It sets out 10 actions to help school staff, families and communities work together on this complex issue. Programs and resources will be available for parents to support their children and where appropriate parents and staff will work closely to ensure their children maintain positive behaviour at school. A copy of the Statement is available on the Department’s website at education.wa.edu.au.

It is important to understand that these changes focus on students who have intentionally been physically aggressive towards others. Students with a disability who either cannot manage their behaviour or do not intend to harm others are not the target of this plan.

As parents, you also play a vital role. Your children benefit from you modelling and rewarding positive behaviour.

I look forward to your ongoing support to keep our school a safe place for all.

NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM LITERACY AND NUMERACY (NAPLAN)

NAPLAN testing is scheduled for all Year 3 and 5 students across a two-week period this year i.e. Tuesday 14 May to Friday 24 May 2019. This is during Week 3 and 4 of Term 2.The testing will be completed online for the first time at North Perth Primary School, with the exception of Year 3 Writing. A schedule for the NAPLAN testing will be released to Year 3 and 4 parents closer to the date.

Parents interested in knowing more about the NAPLAN online assessment may access the public demonstration site – just go to https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site The public demonstration tests provide parents and students the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the type of questions and related functionalities available on the NAPLAN Online assessment.

It is recommended the parents of current Year 3 and 5 students access the public demonstration site. There are demonstration tests for conventions of language (grammar, punctuation, and spelling), numeracy, reading and writing for each NAPLAN test year level: 3, 5, 7 and 9. As all Year 3 students will complete the writing test on paper, there is no Year 3 demonstration test for writing.

An information brochure was sent home recently with our Year 3 and 5 students. This brochure may be accessed by all interested parents. The brochure includes information about why students do NAPLAN and what is assessed. There is also information on how the school and parents can help children prepare for NAPLAN, such as ensuring they are familiar with using devices, typing on them and navigating through programs. Information regarding the duration of each assessment and how the results will be reported to parents is also addressed. Information regarding disability adjustments, formal exemptions regarding assessment adjustments for children with disabilities is mentioned, however, it recommended parents contact the school if they believe an adjustment may be required for their child.

More information Go to the NAPLAN website at https://www.nap.edu.au/home and click on read more under Parent/carer support – NAPLAN at the bottom of the screen for more information, including the parent information brochure and tips to help your child. You are also welcome to contact the school’s NAPLAN coordinator, Andrew Streeton, if you have any questions regarding this assessment program.

Semester 1 2019

STUDENT VOICE IN THE CLASSROOM At North Perth Primary School, teachers encourage Student Voice through a variety of channels in the classroom. Every class has a PATHS Kid of the Day that peers acknowledge by expressing their thoughts and opinions in the form of a compliment.

Throughout many classrooms, students are asked to contribute to class activities by choosing inquiry questions when researching a topic and developing class surveys to learn about their peer’s interests and passions.

There are lots of different ways classrooms are set up to encourage and support Student Voice.

TUESDAY CHATS On Tuesday mornings between 8:30am and 9:00am, selected students from Year 6 gather in the Staffroom for a hot milo and a discussion with Miss Bryan.

During this time, students are able to contribute to school decisions such as the review of the Behaviour Management Guidelines and raise any concerns they may have. Student input is a crucial part of whole school processes.

Tuesday Chats has been designed so that every term, students should have at least one opportunity to meet with a Deputy Principal and have input into school operations.

Recently, Tuesday Chats has focussed on the development of Good Standing. Students brainstormed what it looks like, how it feels and what it sounds like to

be a student with Good Standing. Students also completed a graffiti activity to suggest ideas for a term reward for students who had maintained Good Standing. There were some fantastic ideas put forward.

I look forward to my future Tuesday Chats with Year 6 students.
