sTUdents IMAT laboratory information This basic information is addressed to all, but mainly to students who use the labs of the Institute of Materials Science and Welding (IMAT) at TU Graz for the very first time: it was written to allow a fast introduction to the lab structure and work flows (see attachment 3, 4 and 5). We kindly ask all students, who use the lab facilities for the first time, to read carefully this information before starting working, so that you have already a basic knowledge and that all necessary preconditions are fulfilled when starting with the training at the devices.

Requirements for working in the lab:

1. Predefinition of the project data by the supervisor - Assignment of the project type (IMAT-project, diploma/bachelor thesis, own-/special project) - The project has to be registered in one of the three lab project lists (see attachment 5). The

registration has to be done according to the project type by: Manuela Prader - IMAT- project list Sandra Wesener - diploma/bachelor thesis list Kurt Kerschbaumer - special list

- Definition of the lab project name (can be agreed at the first meeting)

2. First talk in the lab with Kurt Kerschbaumer and the supervisor - Is the experimental scope of work with our existing equipment feasible? - Are the operational instruments available? (clamping device, size of the furnace, etc. …) - Carrying out the tests (test temp., -tension, -speed, heating/cooling rate, etchant, etc. …) - Sample materials (condition as delivered, geometry, fabrication, rest material, storage)? - Time workload, scheduling of the first training, clarification of other queries - Setting and activation of BID (BID.xlsm) by Kurt Kerschbaumer (see attachment 5)

3. Notice of the content of this information and hand over of the signed commitment (see

attachment 8) to Kurt Kerschbaumer

4. Training through the lab team (see table1 below)

Closure of work activities in the lab:

The work activities in the lab are closed, if: - The user has wrapped up all of his/her sample material in a box, labelled with the cover letter

of his/her doctor/master/bachelor thesis (or something similar) and handed over to Kurt Kerschbaumer. The handling of bigger rest material has to be clarified beforehand with the supervisor.

- A complete picture respectively record list is available.

Lab user guidelines of the Institute of Materials Science, Joining and Forming (IMAT)

1. The lab operation time is the time, in which at least one of the lab team members works in the lab premises. In case none of the lab staff is present in the lab premises (holiday, business trip, external work, sickness), the out of lab office hours guidelines apply.

2. The out of lab office hours guidelines must be strictly adhered to according to the lab safety steps (see attachment 1).

3. A second person (see safety steps) shall be available as needed as contact person for any support.

4. All lab activities must be carried out with appropriate protective equipment/gear.

5. The preparation of etchant is only allowed on notice of authorized lab staff.

6. Chemicals must be stored without exception in the chemical boxes (security boxes) and isolated of acids and bases.

7. Dangerous waste products must be separated as special waste and depolluted.

8. The entire IMAT staff and particularly new colleagues must, before starting working, read up on site about first aid kits and fire extinguishers and their functionality. In addition they must be informed about emergency exists and the general user guidelines as well as behavior in emergency cases (see attachments 6 and 7).

9. Working with chemicals is only allowed in the fume hood etching room, using all necessary personal protective equipment (eye shield, work coat and gloves).

10. The air exhaust in the lab has to be switched on permanently (24h). The air exhaust device must be checked every year (Mr. Ogris).

11. Students, trainees and guest researchers must always be trained by an IMAT team member before starting using the lab facilities. Above person confirms with his/her signature (commitment), that he/she has been trained correctly, advised of all potential risks, informed to commit of adherence to safety rules. Above person is only allowed to use the lab facilities after having signed the commitment (see attachment 8), after being trained by an IMAT lab member.

12. In case lab activities are carried out beyond the lab operation time, the user must inform the lab team in advance about the new operation time as well as the name of a potential second person.

13. The general user guidelines concerning working in the lab apply to the entire lab area and must be followed at any time (see attachment 2).

Security steps for lab activities

Security step I (low) Lab activities according to security step I are allowed to be carried out, outside of the lab operation time, only if: A second person was informed, who is reachable by phone for this period of execution of the lab activity. This second person doesn’t have to be present at the institute and doesn’t have to be a member of the lab staff.

Lab activities:

All PC-lab activities (image analysis, evaluation of measurement data, etc.)

Microscopy (LiMi, stereo, macro), REM, MicHV

Macro-, autom. measurement of hardness

Security step II (middle) Lab activities according to security step II are allowed to be carried out, outside of the lab operation time, only if: A second person was informed, who is reachable by phone for this period of execution of the lab activity. This second person must be present at the institute but doesn’t have to be a member of the lab staff. Lab activities:

Carrying out tests at Gleeble, Beta, FSW, EBW, RMC, dilatometer

Residual stress measurement

Security step III (high) Lab activities according to security step III are allowed to be carried out only during lab operation time, Monday – Thursday 8.00 – 16.30 hrs; Friday 8.00 – 13.00 hrs, if: A second person is directly present in the same room. This second person doesn’t have to be a member of the lab staff. Lab activities:

Operating of a machine of the mechanical workshop for sample pre-separation (band saw, vertical/horizontal, wet cutting machine, grinding machine)

heat treatment, impact tests

all etching experiments and corrosion experiments

General guidelines for working in the lab:

Cleanness in the workplace: According to security reasons the TU Graz cleaning staff is instructed to clean only blank work surfaces. Therefore we kindly ask to return all working utensils in the appropriate storage boxes, so that the cleaning staff can easily clean all blank surfaces.

Dust cover: Especially in the microscopy we strongly recommend to cap all devices with the provided dust cover before leaving the workplace.

Log out of the system/computer shutdown: After finishing the work at the computer please log out of the system. The last user of the day should shut down the computer.

Use of the computer: All lab PCs are optimized for the use of the connected devices and are no common desktop PCs. PC activities, which are not in relation to the foreseen application, are not allowed.

Who works where? The teaching metallography respectively the teaching microscopy are exclusively foreseen for diploma and bachelor students, with exception of the stereo microscopy, the automatic measurement of hardness and the analytical image interpretation at the PC DIM_Work. The original lab is foreseen for the doctoral students and the lab team. Separate treatments can be arranged in case of need with the lab team.

Broken/faulty devices, missing utensils: If something breaks down while working, if a device is out of order or if some utensils are missing, please inform the lab team immediately, so that it can be fixed as soon as possible.
