As the partnership between

Adrian College and MIS continues

to expand, the Institute for Educa-

tion would like to recognize Adrian

College biology student Aubrey

Quinlan. Aubrey is a Teacher Edu-

cation student, majoring in biology.

She wrote lesson plans for the stu-

dent field trip to MIS. Three other

Adrian College students, Morgan

Pendleton, Doro-

thy Bandlow, and

Kassandra White

were also part of

the partnership.

MIS and Adrian

College hosted ap-

proximately 100

students from

Dundee on Tuesday, October 23.

For the lesson plans, Aubrey re-

searched the land and the pond at

MIS, and chose specific science top-

ics which fit under the Michigan

Department of Education standards

and benchmarks. She created three

separate lesson plans, focusing on

the MIS trails, native animals to this area,

and the pond. Aubrey really enjoyed work-

ing with the students in the pond as they

tested the water quality with test strips to

determine if fish could survive. She said

the first field trip went really well, and she

is looking forward to the next trip sched-

uled for May 2013. Aubrey is currently

creating a lesson plan with solutions for

the pond at MIS enabling older students to

test the pond. She said, “My whole point is

to get kids interested in science”. The

Institute for Education would like to thank

and congratulate Aubrey Quinlan, Profes-

sor Penny Cobau-Smith, TED, and Dr.

Jeffrey Lake, Biology Department, for their

superb work and success with the MIS

partnership and we look forward to the

upcoming trip in May.

Assistant Professor Al

Craven invited Melissa

Archer and daughter

Jasymnn who is living

with autism, to visit

his class, TED 205,

Education for Excep-

tional Students. They

demonstrated

Jasymann’s utilization

of an iPad. The iPad

has helped not only

Jasymnn but many

other exceptional

students.

The iPad is quickly

becoming widespread

in educational fields.

Melissa Archer, a former

educator, having recog-

nized the value of the iPad

recently held a fundraising

event to raise money to

purchase iPads for local

school districts. On

December 1, another fund-

raising event will take

place in Caine Student

Center at the coffee and

snack bar as the Sodexo

Food Company sponsors,

“Jazzmans supports

Jasmynn”. More infor-

mation on this event can

be found at http://

jasmynn.

In Professor Craven’s

class, most students

spend time working with

young adults at the Adri-

an HOPE Community

Center. Adrian College

TED students, Stephanie

Roberts and Carolyn

Kruger, volunteered to

work with Jasymnn in

her home. The gift of

their time, knowledge

and enthusiasm has

benefited all three.
