Science Subject LeadershipThis course is for those teachers who have responsibility for sciencesubject leadership within their school. It will equip science subjectleaders with knowledge and understanding of current national andinternational views of primary science and use these to develop astrategic direction for science within their school.

Enquiry-based learningThis course will develop the use of enquiry-based learning as well asfocusing on the different styles of enquiry and investigative science.It will provide examples of activities for Early and Primary Years.

Continuing Professional Development inSpecial Educational Needs and Disability.

The University of Chichester has an established reputation fordelivering high quality training programmes and conferences in thefield of special educational needs and disability. As the lead facilitatorfor the SEN in ITT network, a regional provider for the NationalAward for SEN Coordination and the Foundation Degree inTeaching and Learning Support we are committed to developingprogrammes that continue to promote inclusive practice in schools.

With the changes to SEND legislation in September 2014 affectingschools and children with SEND and their families, our aim is tocontinue to offer up to date and relevant training programmes thatsupport innovate practice and research in special and inclusiveeducation. We can offer a range of short courses, higher levelqualifications and consultancy in a range of different areas including:

A multi-sensory approach to teachingAll children benefit from multi-sensory approaches to teaching andlearning. This course outlines what is meant by multi-sensorylearning and how teachers can create resources and plan activitiesthat enable pupils with a wide range of learning needs, to access thecurriculum.

Promoting well-being in the classroomThe current government agenda for SEND recognises theimportance of understanding children’s behaviour and the learningneeds of vulnerable pupils. This course helps to identify positiveways to engage learners and reduce the impact of social andemotional difficulties on their learning.

SEN in the Early YearsEarly intervention is seen as essential for determining the bestoutcomes for children. This course provides EarlyYears practitionerswith tools to identify and assess children who may have a SENand/or disability and how to plan effective programmes to supportthe early development of play and interaction.

Autism and Asperger’s SyndromeChildren on the autism spectrum can face particular learningchallenges in an environment that emphasises the value of sociallylearning together. This informative course will outline the nature ofthe autism spectrum and evaluate the effectiveness of interventionsto ensure that children can learn and access the curriculum inmeaningful ways.

Speech, Language and Communication NeedsResearch has identified SLCN as the predominant specialeducational need in Primary education and where teachers have amuch greater understanding of teaching children who have a SLCN,the likelihood of these difficulties developing into a behaviouralproblem in Secondary school, can be significantly reduced. Coursescan be designed around the specific needs of the school.

Parents as PartnersThe new Government legislation in SEND highlights the importanceof working in partnership with parents. This course focuses on howwe work with families and the impact this can have on children’slearning and achievements.

The Therapeutic Use of the Arts in SchoolsThere are a number of interventions currently available in ourschools that can provide a therapeutic space for troubled andvulnerable children. This course focuses on the psychological needsof pupils and how therapeutic interventions can be implemented tosupport the emotional wellbeing of pupils.

Personalised LearningPersonalised learning is a structured and responsive approach thatempowers individuals to direct their own learning and ensures thepupil voice. With the statutory removal of IEPs, this course willprovide teachers with tools to work with children to set their owntargets and direct their learning in creative and motivating ways.

The New SEND (0-25) Code of PracticeIn September 2014 there will be significant changes to SENprovision in schools. The new legislation has been widely consultedwith LAs, schools, professionals and families. SENCOs will have aresponsibility to inform and implement these changes. Supporting EAL pupilsThis workshop will look at how EAL pupils can be best supportedby teachers and TAs in the classroom

Thinking for Global CitizenshipThis workshop introduces a practical resource developed withteachers in West Sussex primary schools that enables discussion andintegration of issues such as diversity, globalisation, theenvironment, justice and peace and conflict through philosophicalquestions in cross curriculum topic work.

Mind your language!This session enables participants to discuss which language todescribe diversity is not likely to unwittingly offend others. We willalso discuss ‘political correctness.’

Tackling discrimination in schoolsThis in-school training will consider how to reduce and preventincidences of discrimination in schools, including that around gender,disability, LBGTT, racism and the resurgence of the word ‘Jew’ andthe ‘N-word’ as insults.

Bespoke professional development and consultancyWe can offer a range of support to help you address your schoolpriorities for Computing, ICT across the curriculum, or e-safety.Two examples are consultancy support developing your curriculumfor the new Computing National Curriculum or training for new orestablished subject leaders. Developing a school curriculum for ComputingWith the change to the new Computing National Curriculum in2014, schools now have the opportunity to update their ICTcurriculum and develop relevant and rigorous schemes of work. Wecan support teachers, subject leaders or Senior Management Teamsin creating or implementing a new, exciting and challengingComputing curriculum.

ICT and Computing Subject Leadership We can offer one-to-one or targeted cluster training for groups ofsubject leaders to enable them to develop in their role and enhancethe ICT provision in your school.

Group or individual training coursesWe can offer practical training courses focusing on the teaching ofComputing and also work with colleagues across the university tooffer training in the use of ICT across the primary curriculum. Digital media in the primary classroomIn school training that will help teachers to create and use a range ofdigital media with their pupils. Training sessions can focus on aparticular media (e.g. animation) or introduce key ideas andprinciples to apply across different media.

Science and ICT We offer training in how to make effective use of ICT to raisestandards in science lessons.

E-safetyWe can offer training for teachers and schools on e-safetyawareness and also ways of developing children’s understanding andskills with regard to online safety.

Computing for primary pupilsWhat aspects of computing and computational thinking areappropriate for primary pupils to learn? This course will look at age-appropriate computing including using child friendly programminglanguages to make simple (and not-so-simple) games.

Moving on with ScratchMany teachers are using the popular Scratch programming language.This course will enable teachers to use the more advanced featuresof Scratch creatively to develop computational thinking.

Digital LiteracyThis in-school training will explore ways into digital reading andwriting in the primary classroom through the use of video and otherdigital media such as web collaboration, wikis and word clouds.

Control: making programming funWe offer training on how to teach control technology from EarlyYears to Year Six. For complete beginners to more experienced.

Data handling with ICTThis training will look at a range of methods and contexts fordeveloping pupils’ use of ICT to find analyse and present data fromdifferent sources.
