RE: Upcoming February 2020 ILSG Hawai‘i field trip – Modified First Circular

Dear Potential Participant,

The purpose of this modified first circular is to provide you with basic information regarding our geological field trip to Hawai‘i that was originally planned for July 29, 2019, but has been rescheduled to mid-February 2020. Included in this letter is the proposed field trip itinerary, information on transport, accommodation and meals, as well as costs and payment details. The total number of people on the trip will be restricted to 16.

The field trip is not restricted to ILSG members and is open to non-members and spouses.1. AimsThe aims of the field trip are:

To learn the characteristics of modern volcanoes in an intra-plate, non-rift environment to provide contrast and comparison to modern and ancient rift environments (i.e. the MCR and Iceland).

2. Field Trip DatesFebruary 11 to February 21, 2020.3. Field Trip ItineraryThe itinerary for the trip is summarized in Table 1 and Figure 1 on the following pages. Although every effort has been made to secure site visits, accommodation and transport, please be aware that our plans may change due to factors outside our control (e.g. eruptive events). NOTE: The itinerary is a modified draft at this time and may be subject to change. A finalized itinerary will be provided with the second circular (October or November 2019).

4. Transport Transport in Hawai‘i will be via rented 4x4 SUVs (Toyota 4Runners) and we will be transporting our gear in-vehicle.

Your flights to and from Kailua-Kona (Kona International), Hawai‘i are not included in the trip cost. It will be the responsibility of the trip participant to book and pay for these flights. Suggested flight details will be provided in the second circular to be sent out to registrants after the registration period ends (most probably in October or November).

5. Accommodation and MealsWe will be staying in mainly budget accommodation throughout the trip. This will include the Kīlauea Military Camp (dormitory accommodations) and several hotels. Bedding and towels will not be required. More detailed information about required equipment will be provided in the second circular.

For the most part, meals will not be provided during the trip. The Kīlauea Military Camp has restaurant facilities for breakfast and dinner meals, bag lunches are available for purchase (if the budget allows we will try to pay for bagged lunches). A final group dinner in Kailua-Kona is included in the trip cost.

6. Tour Guides/LeadersThroughout our trip we will be joined by experts in the fields of volcanology and magmatic-hydrothermal ore deposits.

George Hudak is the Director of the Minerals-Metallurgy-Mining Initiative and Co-Director of the Precambrian Research Center (PRC) at the Natural Resources Research Institute at the University of Minnesota Duluth. In that role, he guides the overall strategic plan for program areas that include Economic Geology, Materials Characterization, Materials By-Products, Pyrometallurgy, and Minerals Processing, as well as plans and teaches workshops and the 6-week long geology field camp associated with the PRC. For over 30 years, Dr. Hudak has focused his government- and minerals industry-funded research on the utilization of detailed field mapping, physical volcanology, alteration mineral assemblage identification, and geochemistry for increasing exploration efficiency for volcanic and structurally-associated precious and base metal mineral deposits within Precambrian terranes across North America. He has taught several field courses related to Cenozoic volcanism in the Great Rift of Idaho and Yellowstone National Park, led numerous field trips focused on mineralization in volcanic rocks for the Institute on Lake Superior Geology, the Geological Association of Canada, and the Society of Economic Geologists, and has taught numerous short courses related to base- and precious metal mineralization in submarine volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks. He is a Registered Professional Geologist (P.G) in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and a registered Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) in Ontario.

Allan MacTavish is a specialist in PGE-Cu-Ni exploration and obtained a B.Sc. (Honours) Degree in Geology from Laurentian University in 1977 and a M.Sc. Degree in Geology from Lakehead University in 1992. He has been actively involved in the mineral exploration industry since 1975 and has also worked as a Field Geoscientist for the Ontario Geological Survey. He has been Exploration Manager, Canada for Magma Metals (Canada) Limited and its successor Panoramic PGMs (Canada) Limited since May 2007, and is based in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He and his staff were instrumental in bringing the Magma/Panoramic Thunder Bay North Pt-Pd-Cu-Ni deposit from a newly discovered raw prospect to a well-defined, polymetallic, magmatic sulphide deposit with a 9.8 million tonne indicated resource. Before joining Magma Metals/Panoramic Resources he was a Consulting Geologist specializing in PGE-Ni-Cu exploration. Allan has toured the Island of Hawaii 3 times, with his first visit in late 2006. He has examined and studied the geology of all 5 of the volcanoes present on the island and has completed multiple helicopter flights to view the geology from the air. Since 2006, and his first experience with an actively erupting volcano, Allan has visited over 50 active and inactive Holocene and Pleistocene volcanoes in Iceland, New Zealand, and the US (the accompanying photo was taken within the Kīlauea summit caldera).

7. Cost and DepositsTotal cost for the trip is $2,675USD/$3,600CDN. To secure a place on this already popular trip, we ask that you provide a $1,000 USD/$1,300CDN deposit with your registration (attached). Your deposit will help us secure accommodation and vehicle bookings, ensuring the trip can go ahead as planned. Please register by August 15, 2019. We will send you a receipt by email when we receive your deposit. Note that the field trip deposit is non-refundable after January 11, 2020 since the deposits will be used to pay up front costs and deposits on accommodation. You can make your

8. Participation RequirementsThis trip will take us to a variety of locations on the island of Hawai‘i, access to medical attention may be limited at some locations. We will be staying in moderate accommodation, in most cases in dorm-style rooms. There will be early mornings and occasions where arduous physical exertion, such as hiking in rough terrain, sometimes at higher altitude (>11,000), will be necessary. For these reasons we ask that you have a reasonable level of physical personal fitness and are comfortable with the idea of remote travel. That said, we intend to make the trip a lot of fun for all involved and hope you choose to be part of it.

9. Summary

Members of the ILSG intend to run a field trip to Hawai‘i from February 11 to February 21, 2020. Aims include learning about modern volcanism in Hawai‘i to provide contrast with active and

ancient rift environments. Ground travel will be by road and will include a helicopter tour (included in the cost of the trip). Air travel to and from Kona International Airport will be the participant’s responsibility. Accommodation is included in the trip cost, but will at times be relatively basic. A suggested equipment list will be included in the Second Circular. Meals will largely be the responsibility of the participant; however, we will attempt to supply

bagged lunches. A group meal will be included at the end of the trip. The trip will take us to remote areas of on the island Hawai‘i where immediate medical attention

may be limited and will involve a moderate level of physical activity. The full trip cost is estimated at $2,675USD/$3,600CDN, but may have to be increased since

costs are higher during the winter than they are during the originally planned summer trip. A deposit of $1,000USD/$1,300CDN is required upon registration to secure a spot on the trip.

Please fill out the registration slip (on next page) and return before August 1, 2019:
