DESCRIPTION
The Style F-10 Tuned Alternator is used in conjunction with an output transformer and condensers to convert direct current into alternating current at the desired voltages and frequencies.
The operating portion of the alternator comprises an armature which carries the moving contacts. This armature is tuned by physical design and by contact adjustment to a definite frequency and is self driven at that frequency by means of a set of driving contacts which control the application of direct current energy to a very efficient magnetic circuit. High efficiency in the operating mechanism is obtained by the application of two large Alnico permanent magnets to the magnetic circuit.

The driving coil requires from 1 to 6' watts, depending upon the frequency and load power requirements. The overall efficiency of this alternator and its output transformer is approximately 70% at rated load. It is extremely efficient in comparison with the rotating type of converters of similar capacity.
In addition to the set of driving contacts referred to above, four sets of power contacts, two left and two right, are provided for energizing the output transformer. Fig. 1 shows the method of using these contacts in a typical circuit.
All contacts are 1/4 in. in diameter. The contacts on the armature are supported by special springs designed to operate free from bounce at rated frequencies. The fixed contacts are made with screw type supports so that they can be readily adjusted.

APPLICATION
The Style F-10 Tuned Alternator is used in conjunction with an output transformer, proper condensers, and in special cases an output filter, to provide a source of alternating current from a direct current source of supply. It is best suited for stand-by service, or in places where the a-c. power is required only when trains are in the track circuit.
The output transformer may be arranged to provide either track or line a-c. output or both. The power output for the standard arrangement is 100

volt-amperes, but this may be increased to 225 volt-amperes by the use of a special output filter. The combination is available in frequencies of from 60 to 100 cycles.
The type of load to be supplied materially affects the output and life characteristics of the alternator combination, and any proposed application should be referred to our Engineering Department for approval before it is considered for use, in order that we may consider the feasibility of the arrangement and recommend the proper output transformers and condensers for the particular application.
REFERENCES
The ordering references for the Style F-10 Tuned Alternator are given on Plate W-16 of the U. S. & S. catalog. It is important that the d-c. operating voltage and the desired output frequency be specified in the order.
MAINTENANCE AND FIELD INSPECTION
The operating characteristics of the alternator should be checked twice yearly except in cases of excessive operation, where they should be checked after each 500 hours of actual operation. The starting voltage and frequency should be checked in the field, and the alternator removed for shop repair if they are not within the limits given in TABLE I.
The contacts should be examined to make certain that they are not unduly worn. They normally operate in a roughened condition, so that this, in itself, is not an indication of unsatisfactory operation.
In making the field tests, the tuned alternator may be retained in service and connection made as required to obtain the calibration shown in TABLE I.

The frequency can be measured by any standard reliable frequency meter. The minimum starting voltage should be checked by placing a voltmeter across the d-c. terminals, inserting a series resistance in the negative lead to the tuned alternator, and reducing this resistance until the alternator just starts to operate. The starting voltage is the voltmeter reading just before the alternator starts to operate.

SHOP REPAIRS
All repaired alternators should be adjusted and tested in accordance with TABLES II and III. TABLE II shows the adjustment values which are adhered to in alternators manufactured at our factory, and these adjustment values should be obtained in alternators repaired in the railroad shops.
The detailed references used in describing the following procedures are shown on Catalog Plate W-16 at the end of this pamphlet.
A. Removal of Alternator Mechanism From Case and Top Plate
Remove the base and glass shield by removing the two sealing screws, Ref. 55a, in the botton of the alternator. Remove all wire leads from the top of the alternator mechanism by removing nuts, Ref. 26a, on terminal posts, Ref. 25b. It is unnecessary to unseal the terminals at the top plate. Disconnect the top plate from the mechanism base by removing nuts at the lower end of rods, Ref. 52. Remove positive lead connection (screw, Ref. 33b) from frame. The top plate and leads can then be swung clear of the operating position of the alternator.
B. Contact Dressing
Most changes in alternator operation are caused by contact wear. If this wear is not excessive, the alternator can be restored to its original condition through adjustment, by dressing and readjusting the contacts as described below.
The surfaces of all contacts should be dressed as flat as possible using a Rimac Flexstone or its equivalent for this purpose as an ordinary steel contact file is not suitable. Both the spring and post mounted contacts may be removed for this operation, the former by removing four bracket screws, Ref. 86, and the latter by removing contact arm, Ref. 20a. Filing of the spring mounted contact will be facilitated if the contact spring is wedged to prevent movement during filing. Care should be taken, however, to see that the contact is not bent out of shape or scratched during the operation. A very fine emery wneel may also be used for resurfacing the contacts. It is recommended that only contact tips which will have at least~ in. of the contact tip rem:ciining after resurfacing be used again. 0.020
C. Contact Replacement
If the contact tips do not have at least 0. 020 in. remaining after resurfacing they should be removed per the following instructions and replaced. The fixed left and right post mounted contacts can be readily removed by removing contact arm, Ref. 20 or 20a. With this arm removed, the contacts can be removed from the block and replaced with contacts of similar material. The power contact posts, Ref. 21, have tungsten tips and the drive contact post, Ref. 22, has an Elkonium tip.
The movaole contacts and their associated sorings and stops are fastened to the armature on removable brackets. These brackets may be removed from the armature by removing 4 bracket screws, Ref. 86. H.eplacement brackets, Ref. 84 and 85 may then be substituted as necessary and attached to the armature by means of the four bracket screws, Ref. 86.

On tuned alternators manufactured prior to 1948, the movable contacts and their associated springs and stops are permanently fastened to the armature so that the contacts may not be removed without removing the entire armature. These alternators may be readily discerned from the newer type by the presence of rivets instead of screws on brackets fastening the movable contacts to the armature. When it becomes necessary to replace the contacts on this type alternator, an armature complete, Ref. 82, 82a or 82b, with removable brackets should be ordered.
D. Armature Replacement
If it becomes necessary to replace the armature, it can be removed by removing the permanent magnets, Ref. 42, loosening nuts, Ref. 15, and removing lower pole piece stud, Ref. 14. The armature may then be taken from the mechanism and replaced.
If it is necessary to remove the permanent magnets, an iron keeper should be placed across each magnet. Under no circumstances should the magnets be placed together. The location of the magnets should be marked before they are dismantled from the alternator and they should be reassembled in the same position.
If the permanent magnets are handled properly by removing them carefully and retaining the flux by iron keepers, it should be possible to replace them on the alternator without further checks. These magnets are charged to a definite strength at our factory by means of a suitable charging device. This strength is measured in terms of grams (TABLE II) on a special testing frame which is not usually required in the railroad shops if the magnets are properly handled. Instructions for charging and testing these magnets is given in our Instruction Pamphlets U-5455 and U-5456 covering Magnet Charger and Magnet Tester, respectively.
After the magnets have been assembled, the pole piece air gaps should be set in accordance with the values given in TABLE Il. In making these adjustments, make certain that all of the five contacts are open so that they do not make when the armature is extended to the maximum in either direction. Adjust the right-hand air gap to the minimum value specified in TABLE II, and the left-hand air gap to the maximum value specified. The armature should then be held against the right pole face, and, if necessary, the opening of the righthand air gap should be increased until the armature does not stick against the right pole piece. It may later be necessary to reduce the left-hand air gap slightly, but not to less than the minimum value specified in TABLE II, to meet the other requirements of alternator operation.
E. Contact Readjustment
After the contacts have been dressed or replaced, they should be adjusted to thP values specified in TABLE II, first making sure that the permanent magnets are in place.
The initial contact spring pressure shown in TABLE II represents the force in ounces required at the tip of the contact to just move the contact spring away from the stop. This pressure is set at the factory to the values shown

and the contacts are thoroughly baked and rechecked to insure that this value is maintained. If it is necessary to readjust these contacts, care should be taken to make certain that no sharp bends or scratches are produced in the spring structure.
All the contacts should be so adjusted that their faces meet flat when first touching and remain flat during the entire stroke of the contacts. This adjustment can be made by slightly bending the metal contact support if necessary or raising or lowering the support by means of the slot provided for this purpose.
The driving contacts are closed when the tuned alternator is deenergized and these contacts should be adjusted to have a contact compression as given in TABLE II. The driving contact should be adjusted first by means of the following procedure:
1. Back off all post mounted contacts far enough so that there is no possibility of the spring mounted contacts touching the post mounted contacts when
I the armature is moved to its limits between the pole pieces.
2. With the armature free, adjust the left-hand rear (power) post mounted contact L2 until an opening of 0. 006 in. to 0. 008 in. exists between the face of this contact and its corresponding movable contacts located on the armature. (All post mounted contacts may be located by reference to the terminal tags on the top plate. )
3. Now force the armature to the left until the movable contact just touches the fixed contact L2. The armature should then be held in this position by inserting a wooden wedge between the armature and the upper right pole piece.
4. The post mounted driving contact located on the opposite side of the fixed contact structure from contact L2 should then be moved inward until it just touches its corresponding movable contact. The lock nut on the contact post should then be securely tightened.
After the driving contact has been adjusted, the power contacts should be set by adjusting the post mounted contacts so that the opening between them is in accordance with the values shown in TABLE Il.
After the power contacts have been properly set, they should be locked in place by tightening their respective lock nuts.
F. Electrical Calibration and Load Tests
CAUTION: Before operating alternator be sure that the condensers called for in TABLE III are properly applied as shown in Fig. 2 to prevent damage to contacts.
The following tests should be performed with the base top plate and shield still removed as it may be necessary to readjust the contacts after these tests have been performed.
The starting voltage of the alternator should be checked as explained on Sh. 3. If the alternator does not start within the limits specified in TABLE Il, the left-hand air gap should be closed slightly. After changing this air gap, the contact openings and driving contact compression should be rechecked to see that they still conform to the specified values.

The frequency should be set to the value shown in TABLE II. Slight adjustments in frequency should be made by changing the number or size of the adjusting nuts (Ref. 62 and 65) at the top of the armature.
Each power contact should be checked for "on time", which should be not less than the values specified in TABLE II. This check can be made by using a Style PD-20 Code Meter, Pc. 291611, or its equivalent. (Instruction Pamphlet U-5486)
After the alternator has met the foregoing requirements, it should be given a load test of at least 10 minutes duration corresponding to the loads obtained in actual service. If such a test is not practical, the alternator should be given a test of at least 10 minutes duration in accordance with test circuit, Fig. 2, and load per TABLE Ill. During this test it should be noted that the contacts operate with only very slight sparking and that no undue flashes are apparent.
Following the load test, the alternator should be operated at no load for a period of twenty-four hours, and the load test repeated to make certain that there have been no undue changes during the breaking in process. After the no load test of twenty-four hours, it may be necessary to reset the frequency by means of the armature adjusting nuts.
After the foregoing tests have been completed, the terminal leads should be securely fastened to their respective terminal posts. Care should be taken when placing the driving coil condenser and coil lead on the driving contact post that the metal sleeves on these leads do not make contact with any part of the common relay frame. After the leads have been connected the shield, base and top plate should be assembled to the alternator mechanism.
MEGGER TEST
Before returni.ng the alternator to service, it should be checked for insulation breakdown between all termmal posts and the relay base using a 500 volt megger. Any points of voltage breakdown should be corrected.
