This week in Neuroscience w/Ms. Torres & Ms. Brown [email protected] [email protected]

Concepts

In this unit (Brain Comparisons) it important for students to be able to understand:

1. The size and shape of the cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem differ among animal species.

2. Animal intelligence is roughly related to the amount of folding of the cerebrum.

Activities

1. Independent Practice: Students will take quick notes on different mammalian brains.

2. Group Activity: Students compare and contrast models and/or drawings of cat and rabbit brains. Students will

also observe relative sizes and shapes of brain parts and how they vary among mammals.

3. Group Discussion: Students will discuss how sizes and shapes of the cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem differ

among animal species (considering what each species does).

4. Literature Circles: Skullduggery Chapters 6-9

5. Worksheet(s): Brain Parts, Brains from Different Points of View, Predict How Smart, Brain Proportions

Reminders/Comments:

o Neuroscience students will take a cumulative Final Exam at the end of Cycle 6. Please make the proper

arrangements to ensure students will be in attendance on these days. It will be useful to have students refresh

themselves on material weekly (a unit per week) to ensure optimal success on the exam:

o May 22, 2017 (B Day)

o May 23, 2017 (A Day)

o New unit required reading for Brain Comparisons (Skullduggery) will be handed out on 4/17(A Day) and 4/18 (B

Day).

o Please check Parent Connect (Gradespeed) weekly to remain up-to-date with student progress.

o Please sign up for Remind.com if you have not already done so already by using:

Lesson 3: Build a Skull Part 3

1) The skull protects the brain. 2) The skull also needs protection.

Students will create and test protective covers for water balloon “brains” using various recycled materials.

Lesson 4: Good Wrinkles

1) Wrinkles in the cerebrum correlate to higher intelligence in animal species. 2) Wrinkles evolved to allow

more cerebral cortex to fit within the skull.

By using paper to represent the surface areas of the cerebrum and the skull, students will learn about the

significance of wrinkles on the surface of the mammalian cerebrum.

Lesson 5:

1) The relative sizes and shapes of brain parts vary among mammals.

Students compare and contrast life size models and /or drawings of cat and rabbit brains. Students also may

make plaster models of rabbit brains.

Reminders: Students if you miss class it is your responsibility to come to me for missed assignments during my

conference period, before, or after school. You can also contact me on Remind.com or at
