Phase IHow to Manage Remote Employees

Training Description- This course is designed for leaders new to managing remote employees or for managers transitioning to working remotely. The content in this course is designed to review ways to keep remote employees engaged, hold them accountable, and address the differences in remote vs. office management. Managers attending this course will develop a foundation of what to expect and how to adapt their leadership styles to the remote environment.

Target AudienceManagers: Characteristics,- New to remote working - Age ranges between 20-75; broad age range because of various backgrounds.- Direct reports (some or all) recently transitioned to remote working.- No experience managing remote workers. - Genders include male and female.

Delivery Modality and Length- Classroom setting/in-person.- Small group (10 participants maximum).- (2) Facilitators (1 trainer and 1 manager with experience managing remote teams).- Three (4) hour days (8am-12pm).

Goals- Address how the workplace dynamic changes.- How to hold remote employees accountable.- How to maintain a strong sense of “team”.- How to ensure employee engagement.

Phase II How to Manage Remote Employees

Goals• The managers will learn workplace dynamic changes in a remote environment.• The managers will understand how to hold remote employees accountable.• The managers will learn how to maintain a strong sense of team using interactive team meetings.• The managers will learn how to develop their staff and ensure employee engagement in a remote environment.

Objectives• After the training, managers will identify five management skills needed to create an effective remote environment with 90%

accuracy.• After the training, managers will write one complete SMART goal needed to effectively hold their direct reports accountable

with 100% accuracy.• After the training, managers will conduct a 15-20 minute team meeting using WebEx with 100% accuracy.• After the training, managers will identify 3 development traits needed to enhance the professional development of their staff

with 100% accuracy.

Phase II

Encourage Critical Thinking• The course objectives will

encourage critical thinking by utilizing the existing skills of each manager and leveraging their strengths. The managers will learn how to use their knowledge and learning how to adapt their management style to fit a remote setting with remote direct reports.

Instructional Strategies• This face-to-face course will review

common managers situations and strategies and flip them to review how to handle these in a remote setting. Critical thinking and creativity will be explored by doing breakout sessions (groups of 3-4) to explore responses to remote scenarios. In addition to 40% of the class being breakout sessions, managers will have a materials booklet to respond individually to various scenarios 15% of the time. Learning best practices from experienced managers will also account for 15% of the time. The remaining 30% will be classroom-led discussion.

Phase III Plan For Implementation

• The delivery of this course will take place December 2nd – 4th in a classroom with a group of managers not to exceed 10.

• This course will be 4 hours a day and take place over 3 consecutive days.• Individuals involved will include a corporate trainer to facilitate the

classroom content and a subject matter expert (a manager with tenure of 5+ years in a remote environment).

• Materials will include a workbook primarily to notate best practices and ideas learned in the classroom. This workbook will include the outline of classroom discussion.

• Computer and project• Whiteboard and dry erase markers• Large sheets of white paper• Printed copies of workbook for each participant; this is for notating best

Implementation Plan

• A communication from senior leadership will go to all directors and manager-level employees to advise of this new requirement for all managers requesting to work remotely. This communication will include the steps involved on how the request is routed to training.

• This course will be a requirement prior to managers working remotely and must be completed prior to working from home.

• When the director submits the request to HR for the manager to telecommute, it will automatically send a request to the training department to enroll the manager in this course.

• The instruction will be implemented in the Corporate Building and the trainers will determine the classroom.

• The course will run monthly or quarterly depending on the business need.• The individuals involved will include the manager (participant), his/her

director (to submit request), HR (to send the request to the training department), guest facilitator (manager in the field), and the trainer to organize and conduct the training.

The managers will learn the differences on managing in person vs. remotely.

The managers will identify at least 3 key differences on managing from a remote environment. Each participant will report out on one key difference and notate these in their workbooks with 100% accuracy.

Communication with your staff – Classroom Discussion

Managers will learn efficient ways to communicate with their staff.

Practice drafting communication – individual work using their workbook and Rewrite Handout (PDF)

Managers will learn how the tone of their written communication impacts the receiver.

The managers will create 2 example emails (1 to the team, 1 to a direct report) addressing a performance concern. They will also complete the Rewrite Handout. These should both be completed with 100% accuracy.
