INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE USE OF GUIDE TO ARMY TRADES

IN EMPLOYMENT EXCHANGES

1. Introduction:. In 2004 DGE & T brought out a Guide giving civil equivalents of Army Trades for

assisting Employment Exchanges in rendering effective assistance in placement of ex-servicemen. The

Guide was revised in 1985, incorporating the latest changes. Many changes have taken place in contents of

Army occupations and many new trades have been introduced in the Army since then. Further, the National

Classification of Occupation (NCO) Code published in 1986 has been on the pattern of International

Standard Classification of Occupation (ISCO) 1966. It has therefore become necessary to provide to the

employment exchanges fresh Guide giving civil equivalents of Army Trades.

2. Principles of Equation. In the Present ‘Guide’ , an attempt has been made to identify civil equivalents

of all individual Army Trades taking into consideration the following factors:-

(a) Job contents of trades in the Army.

(b) Nature, type and length of training received by Army personnel.

(c) Educational and technical attainment of Army personnel.

(d) Occupational suitability of Army tradesmen for particular civil occupation and employability in

civilian trades.

(e) Aspirations of Army personnel in view of their rank and position in the Army

3. How to use the Guide. As an aid to Employment Officers in registering ex-servicemen and matching

them against particular civilian vacancies, the Guide contains definitions of individual Army trade in each

group giving its job contents, highlighting to the extent possible job performance of comparable civilian

trades.

4. Against each Army trade generally, more than one civil equivalent occupation (s) have been given in

the order of their suitability and importance. Thus against a Army trade, a list of all civil occupations is

given for which an ex-servicemen belonging to a particular trade could be considered suitable and qualified.

The first civil equated occupation in the list is the one most suitable for the ex-servicemen of the trade. The

occupations mentioned later are in descending order of suitability. The Employment Officer may consider

the ex-servicemen for registration for any of these occupations subject to his choice.

5. Ex Servicemen who have received diversified training and acquired experience in several trades in the

service would be eligible for consideration against several civilian trades.

6. The Guide does not cover officer cadre. Officers by virtue of their position, would be eligible for

employment in civil life for executive, administrative or managerial posts and they should be registered for

such jobs.

7. An index has also been given in the Guide listing Army Trades with their respective NCO codes.

8. Ex Servicemen coming to Employment Exchanges be provided assistance with regards to determining

the occupations for which they should be registered as well as the occupations for which they should be

sponsored. The Guide, if used with imagination, could be invaluable in providing befitting resettlement to

ex-servicemen in civil sector.
