This is not exactly the type of waiter we are going to discuss today, but they do illustrate early versions of what the dumbwaiter was intended to be used for. A dumbwaiter is a small elevator system that moves smaller quantities or lighter weighted materials from one floor to another in a building. In transit, these systems are typically found in warehouses or storerooms and not intended for public use or the movement of people. DO NOT ADVANCE

PPT slide 6 There are three basic types of dumbwaiters: traction, hydraulic, and winding drum. Transit industries tend to utilize traction and winding drum type dumbwaiters. Traction dumbwaiters usually service high rise buildings as they have no travel limitations and can travel at faster speeds as compared to winding drum dumbwaiters which tend to be used for low-rise buildings and needs. In some instances, these traction dumbwaiter systems have been referred to as “mini-traction” elevators because of the similarities to their larger counterpart, the electric traction elevator. PPT slide 18 Once again, the basic operation of a dumbwaiter is similar to a standard elevator. Advance Someone wishing to use the dumbwaiter must first press call button. This button alerts the car to travel to the selected floor. Advance Doors must be closed in order for the car to move. If doors are open on any floor, the car will not move even if the call button is pushed. Advance Once all doors are closed, interlocks are made allowing the car to travel. Advance Some units have a retiring cam which unlocks the exterior door once the car arrives at the designated floor. There is a small DC motor on top of the car that operates the retiring cam. PPT slide 25 Like other elevator systems, dumbwaiters must be maintained for proper function and effective use. Each transit authority keeps their own maintenance schedule and documentation for these systems. The following is a short review of the general maintenance procedures for dumbwaiters as well as an example maintenance schedule. However, this is only general and one should always follow authority specific maintenance schedules and procedures. To perform maintenance, first begin by making sure the opening and area around the dumbwaiter remains clear and this includes others as well. Bring the car to the top floor for service below, and bring the car to the lower floor for service and maintenance in the top of the hoistway. Advance

Use a non-conductive tool to make up the hoistway interlock, then use the other hand to press the call button to send the car away. Interlock could be on either side of the door, right adjusted or left adjusted. If the car is not there, bring it to where you are to open door, and then complete the same process. Again, if your transit authority utilizes and maintains dumbwaiters, be sure to follow your specific transit authority procedures for this process. Advance

Overall, safety procedures for dumbwaiters are similar to those for other elevator systems. Additionally, and like other typical elevator systems, one must make sure power is turned off prior to maintenance and lockout/tagout is performed when needed. Weight capacity is typically manufacturer specific dependent on space and construction of car. [Refer participants to the ASME Code A17.1 and A17.2 for more information regarding dumbwaiters.] See A17.1 Sections 7 and A17.2 Section 7 for a detailed review of dumbwaiter code requirement.
